This is the sort of style my 18 year old would wear but they are all different and I wouldn’t judge your daughter for her dress style. She needs to be authentically herself.

If you try and police what they wear to a nightclub, it is easy to end up with a situation where they leave the house in one outfit and arrive at the club in another.

If you are going to a more formal do where some twat will hold her 18yo fashion disaster against her for life then you need the "granddad acceptable" dress.
I used to march the girls via Zara, Mango and All Saints. Generally something all round acceptable was found.

In a few years you will be able to buy her dresses you both like, right now you might have to settle on a compromise dress and accept that she may only wear it once or twice. I'd throw a bit of time and effort into going shopping together rather than just trying to throw money at it. In ten years time she will remember the coffee you drank on the freezing cold bench, not the dress.

She's 18, not 14. She has never had to change her clothes for me. Never ever. She has always had very clear ideas about what she wore. She loves labels but obviously at 18, she can't afford them. I was trying to do a nice thing.

Maybe travel vouchers? Somewhere sunny? Ibiza even?

wishingitwasfriday · 10/12/2022 13:33

Never had to change her clothes for you? Yet here you are, trying to buy something that's not her style. So you are trying to get her to change her clothes.

Lovemusic33 · 10/12/2022 13:34

Why are you buying clothes for a 18 year old? My dd is 18 and wouldn’t wear any of these other than the trainers in the first link. She likes to pick her own clothes and really it’s not up to me if they are appropriate or not, she’s an adult. Maybe just gift her a voucher or some cash?

WishingWell5 · 10/12/2022 13:34

What about some designer shoes or a bag?

None of those dresses cover their asses! Believe me, this is me trying to match her taste but with a labelled product as a treat. God almighty.

Out of the list I like 2 or 7...

pictish · 10/12/2022 13:37

She will not like your dignified version of what you’d prefer her to wear no matter how expensive. Waste of money.

We are black, so the black model in number 2 looks fab and red is a colour which is stunning on her. She will make no bones about telling me that something looks ridiculous if it's not to her fancy.

Your attitude towards your daughter is disgusting and you should be ashamed

PestorPeston · 10/12/2022 13:42

Then trust her taste, give her a budget for one dress and honour the deal by buying what she chooses.

That is so her! Problem is that they're not discounted! I'll send her the link. Thanks

Your attitude to me is pretty disgusting but I guess you're not ashamed.

I wanted it to be a surprise. Never mind. Clearly, WORST MUM EVER.

She wears sundresses (like the Shein one) with Doc Martens. She is studying Law next year. She is confident and outgoing and popular. I just wanted to treat her with something that she would wear but was expensive. She hasn't got back to me yet so I might just have to go out with my shotgun and drag her home.

The black dress is very Wednesday Adams and I imagine most 18 year olds have probably watched the recent series. On that basis they might like it.

PestorPeston · 10/12/2022 13:49

You're a brave woman wanting to surprise an 18 yo with a dress.

I have worked in Fashion (loosely) so she appreciates my input to a degree. She is still discovering her style as she was very pink as a young girl and then very Nike as a teen and now she has gone Shein lol.

I keep an handy 18yo for such occasions.

number 6 got the best reception. Number 8 was quite nice and 5 possibly depending on the person.

the rest no way.

shinynewapple22 · 10/12/2022 13:52

I think they are hugely expensive for something you don't know they are going to like and maybe will hardly be worn . Personally I like the snake print one and would have worn something like that in my 20s. At 18 I wore jeans and sweatshirts plus long ethnic skirts with bells on !

Haha. Let me look back. Thank your token 18 year old for their input (is she like a stunt pineapple?) I presume they have crawled back into their cell now. They usually only come out at night or to feed, so you're doing something right! 😃

Sorry to read you getting grief, OP.

Too skinny 21yo DD would wear some of those but not others (I suspect). I'd prefer to take her shopping (in person) or sit with her to choose something. No way I could safely choose things for her. She wears stuff I find utterly bizarre but she gets favourable opinions from others <shrug>.
