am I the only MNer to hate pockets?

I find that pockets are always right where I least want extra bulk, ie over my breasts (32FF) or hips. Plus in dresses and blazers they quickly sag and pull the drape out of line.
And it's a faff to move things from outfit to outfit vs just having everything in my one (small!) handbag that I can grab and go.
But it seems like everyone else is screaming for them.

I have a few dresses that are from sites that boast about pockets. I do like pockets but I find the ones on the dresses are flimsy, wouldn't hold a phone even without ripping through or it falling out. So yes to pockets, but no to shit pockets.

Apart from lovely practicality, I feel like you're assuming the most important point is how flattering an item is to body shape - but style is more than that. I love the slouch you can only get with deep trouser pockets.

MerylSqueak · 09/12/2022 23:38

I LOATHE pockets on anything other than coats and bags. I can't imagine ever needing to carry anything in a dress and as someone with big breasts and hips, no, I really don't want to look bulkier there. So many clothing options are ruined for me by them.

Mercurial123 · 10/12/2022 08:32

Love pockets especially in dresses.

orbitalcrisis · 10/12/2022 09:20

I love pockets, I hate how small they are on women's trousers though!

Beanbagtrap · 10/12/2022 09:22

What would be good is if they could have a single tampon pouch so that it wouldnt fall out as you sit down/stand up in front of all your colleagues.

dontgobaconmyheart · 10/12/2022 10:51

I think it really depends. I wouldn't buy something with a twee little pocket over the breast anyway. There's a huge difference between the sad little pockets added on as a design choice and a usable pocket at hand appropriate height that one can slip hands naturally into.

I don't want to keep objects in my pockets, but there is something satisfying and practical about the option to put hands in on anything longer ot warm weather orientated - dressing gowns, coats, hoodies etc.

I was hoping that now we are back to the looser silhouette we could have proper pockets but unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the case. I never carried a handbag pre the age of 23 and when I was a teen and reaaaaly baggy trousers were in I could fit everything in my pockets including a can of cider for the train! The return of cargo trousers is much appreciated.

CrapBucket · 10/12/2022 14:09

Love pockets. The best ones are in a pair of jeans my son outgrew and passed to me. They are a lot deeper than womens pockets.

shinynewapple22 · 10/12/2022 14:12

I like pockets in trousers and wouldn't buy any that didn't have them. I like them in a long cardigan or jacket too and I like the idea of them in a dress but my experience has been of side pockets which are meant to be on the hips but come half way down my thighs giving a very strange shape . I don't think that style works unless you are the particular height and shape that the dress has been cut for

maddy68 · 10/12/2022 14:19

Totally agree. They add bulk to my hips.

SnowyPheasants · 10/12/2022 14:42

we need bra's with pockets.

MerylSqueak · 10/12/2022 15:20

I don't even want them on trousers. I usually see them up.

Precipice · 10/12/2022 15:41

The point upthread about them not being as integrated into women's designs as men's is something I agree with.

I love pockets. I always use pockets in trousers and in jackets.

Maybe it's partially a pocket v. bag split. I don't like handbags. When I need to bring things that don't fit into pockets (and I expect pockets in combination to fit my wallet, my phone, keys, a small tub of cream, a tissue, a pad on menstrual days, and in the winter gloves and my earband), I'm most often with a rucksack, but at that point I have at least a book if not also a laptop. I take my keycard from my wallet as I walk into the building and then keep it in a pocket. I hate lanyards.

I always like a pocket to keep a tissue in. I seem to have a constantly runny nose these days.

whatisforteamum · 25/02/2023 03:13

I only like them on coats or dressing gowns. They look bulky and frumpy. My dh has almost ruined a really nice winter jacket stuffing pockets full of bulky gloves wallet and anything really
I wouldn't buy a skirt or dress with pockets .

BusterGonad · 25/02/2023 05:30

Why would anyone put things in their bra! How can there even be room and don't your bras get all saggy and ruined?

Tontostitis · 25/02/2023 05:43

I sew them up and cut the pocket bit off. They ruin the line of dresses and are often unusable.

WhoppingBigBackside · 25/02/2023 06:26

I don't buy clothes that don't have pockets, other than garments that go inside other clothes (socks, bras, knickers, tights, t-shirts). If a shirt or dress has chest pockets, I won't buy it, unless it's a flat pocket.

You could stick to only buying shirts, tops, skirts, dresses, trousers and jackets without pockets, or not using them.

Fake pockets or pockets too small to hold anything are annoying.

user1477391263 · 25/02/2023 06:40

I don't use pockets even when they exist in clothes. I don't want the hassle of remembering things are in pockets and having to take them out and move them around to other clothes, not to mention the hassle of things getting sat on, melted, put through the washing machine etc. I keep my stuff in a small cross body bag and then I know where everything is.

RampantIvy · 25/02/2023 07:56

I don't want to have to carry a handbag around with me all the time, so I prefer pockets.

Researchmama · 05/07/2023 01:00

I also do not like pockets in dresses. They are bulky and ruin a perfectly good line on the dress. Washing dresses with pockets is a nightmare because they never lay flat again, and who wants a bulky mess sticking off their side? Apparently that’s all the rage now though and I’m finding it difficult to find dresses without them. I refuse to buy them so on the plus side I’m saving money. I’m not sure why they’re so sought after, nobody likes a cute bag anymore? Do we really need our phones everywhere we go? I’ve been using mine less and less and it’s so freeing.

nocoolnamesleft · 05/07/2023 01:16

I desperately want better pockets. I can't carry a handbag at work.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 05/07/2023 01:29

I hate pockets. Especially on the hip seam of trousers that just add bulk so I get them sewn up. I never use pockets in any clothing as they spoil the line. I keep the tacking stitch in them.

LoveLabradors · 05/07/2023 08:58

I like pockets in pj bottoms and trousers. But I loathe them in skirts and dresses and am always baffled by the whole “this dress is amazing it has POCKETS” breathy excitement. It adds bulk and spoils the line and look. I’m never going to put a phone or wallet in a flimsy fabric pocket of a skirt or dress so what on Earth is the point of them?!
