The No Belt look

I keep noticing fashion reels on FB (how did I get sucked in?!) where the person wears jeans with a jumper tucked in and no belt. It looks unfinished to me. Has anyone else noticed, and is it a Thing? Looks a bit rubbish imo, but I guess I'm always behind the curve!

I've not worn a belt in years with jeans. Be interesting to see what others say.

ZaZathecat · 05/12/2022 17:07

You must be at the right end of the curve Frowns!

The tucking a bit of a jumper into the waistband is called a 'french tuck'.
I think it looks silly.
I wear a belt with jeans.

Binfire · 05/12/2022 17:09

Can you share a screenshot of what you mean? I haven’t worn a belt for a while either, nothing to do with my expanding waistline honest!

KirstenBlest · 05/12/2022 17:19

@Binfire , not from Fb, but this sort of thing, but with a jumper not shirt:
I think it makes them look like they don't go in in the middle

If you have a waist, and your jeans fit well, you don't actually need a belt to make them stay up. I've never worn a belt as I hate the feel of them, it appears I'm now on trend!

creamcheeseandlox · 05/12/2022 17:24

I do a french tuck with jeans as I think it's gives more of a shape to you rather than a big square shapeless jumper hanging over your waist. I also always wear belts as I think it finishes off a look and I like accessories with an outfit. I wear all kind of colour and textures with my belts to really use it as a part of the outfit.

ZaZathecat · 05/12/2022 17:32

Like this, and the photo above. I'm happy with a French tuck, it's the no belt thing I find strange, as it kind of finishes off the outfit. I don't wear a belt if wearing a long top over jeans as it looks bumpy

I am short-waisted with a v small waist, and prefer jeans and trousers with a high rise. If I add a belt, it can make my torso look even shorter, so for the most part, I avoid. Also, I don't like belts, particularly ones with logos.

Occasionally, an outfit does feel more put together with something threaded though the belt loops - in this instance, I use a bandana or scarf.

coconotgrove · 05/12/2022 18:08

Re. french tuck. I only do that if the shirt I am wearing has a split in the side otherwise it doesn't sit straight. I think a belt + french tuck looks a bit too contrived., so just pick one or the other!

Binfire · 05/12/2022 18:25

It just looks normal to me! I put one on the other day and thought it looked a bit extra so took it off.
I’ve got some lovely belts, I’m hanging onto them til they’re back in!

faffadoodledo · 05/12/2022 18:28

I have noticed the same thing! I love a nice worn belt with a pair of jeans.

Kiitos · 05/12/2022 18:39

Urgh I hate belts unless they’re worn over a loose dress for some waist definition.
I’ve always said if your trousers fit you don’t need a belt! I hate how the bunch up the fabric and add bulk. I also think ‘no belt’ looks more modern. Don’t get the French tuck thing though, it always feels scruffy to me

CatsEatDogs · 05/12/2022 19:01

I think lots of people put belts away with the skinny Jean phenomenon. The “look” with skinny jeans was often a longer looser top and so no need for belts as they couldn’t be seen. I think they’re coming back now as the trouser shape and silhouette changes again.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 05/12/2022 19:08

If I’m going out in the evening and I want to tuck a top in then I’ve got a few belts including a pewter cut out Hush one which is begging to be seen!

I recently wore a black thin suede and amber diamanté stones Reiss belt which I originally bought to go over a dress.

I don’t care if belts are out in jeans and French tucks are in.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 05/12/2022 19:11

The one type of belt I wouldn’t wear with jeans is eg a plain black, brown etc belt.

For me, the belt has to have interest in the buckle or fabric for it to be shown.

Pancakeorcrepe · 05/12/2022 20:18

I hate belts and don’t wear them. My trousers still stay on 😀

Rainbowshit · 05/12/2022 20:31

I also don't like belts on jeans. Nothing wrong with the pictures posted. Looks fine to me.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/12/2022 20:35

Oh I hate belts! If my jeans are too big at the waist I bring them to the alterations place.

LuciferRising · 05/12/2022 21:08

Never worn a belt. Hate the feel of them and look like clutter.

luxxlisbon · 05/12/2022 21:22

I don’t think it looks unfinished, often belts just add unnecessary fuss and bulk.

I’ve literally never worn a belt with jeans. Didn’t realise it was so polarising.

TheOGCCL · 05/12/2022 23:29

There's been a real trend towards both more casual dressing and minimalism - a lot of the high fashion looks are incredibly pared back. So I guess belts look a bit 'fancy' for this. House of Colour types will say its a point of interest to kick your outfit up but it can look a bit twee/.old fashioned.

I think belts are making a bit of a comeback now tops are shorter. There seem to be more in the shops. I tend to wear thin ones, in the same colour as my trousers, so they don't over dominate or draw attention to where my waist is. I do think they are good for offsetting some of the baggier clothes around as you need your waist to be your slimmest part to avoid bag lady.

pavillion1 · 05/12/2022 23:32

Reminds me of Bross

ProfessorSillyStuff · 05/12/2022 23:42

I don't think younger people have time for this. It makes every trip to the loo a faf just for vanity, it's cumbersome and catches on things, makes you look like you overthought your outfit, not a cool look.

ProfessorSillyStuff · 05/12/2022 23:43

In fact it's just not cool to look like you spent a lot on clothes anymore. Nobody cool wants to hang with materialistic people.
