Can I wear a cream fur capelet to a winter wedding...

....or is that too bride-y??? I've a dark green velvet dress to wear, but it's really plain, I'm looking for a way to jazz it up (also in my head have a peaky blinders/ Helen mccrory vibe, not that I'm anything near as foxy as she!)

Thoughts please?? 🤔

I'm a guest I should add! 😀

Are you Aunt Sarah?

fingfong · 27/11/2022 16:44

Who she???

Swampthing55 · 27/11/2022 16:45

Bit too bridey I would think but it's up to you

fingfong · 27/11/2022 16:46

Yeah I think you're probably right. Damn. How else can I make the dress more interesting, I'm trying not to buy anything new (or too expensive anyway)

How big is it? If it’s just to cover your shoulders it should be ok but if it’s your whole top half it’s a bit dodgy. Would a navy one work?

fingfong · 27/11/2022 16:47

It's just a covering the shoulders thing, hang on I'll find a pic

Does it need to be interesting? I normally go for a bit of statement jewellery if I’m looking to make something less plain.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 27/11/2022 16:49

I wouldn’t (but not cos it’s too ‘bridey’) but because I imagine the cream fur will transfer all over the green velvet.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 27/11/2022 16:50

I’d go for something like this

fingfong · 27/11/2022 16:51

It needs to be a bit interesting because the dress is so plain - round neck, long sleeves, slight swing shape, knee length...I don't know where to start for statement jewellery either 😫my friend is super stylish and all the other guests are going to be really trendy and sophisticated

OP posts:
fingfong · 27/11/2022 16:52

I never thought about the fur transfer - very good point, that rules that out!!

Aunt Sarah (skip to 7.30 for the relevant scene) was the first thing I thought of:

Actually I think you could get away with it with dark green, assuming bride is wearing white/cream. I'd check though - my friend wore dark green silk for her wedding dress...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/11/2022 16:56

Your dress sounds lovely. Where is it from?

I think no to cream - it might look a bit too 1950s Christmas movie.

fingfong · 27/11/2022 16:59

@DisplayPurposesOnly hahahaha yea that might be a bit too realistic! Hehehhe

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie it's a Hobbs limited edition one, it's really lovely but quite stark- maybe fine if you look like Edie Sedgwick but my cheekbones alone won't carry it!

I’d go for an embroidered or embellished jacket or coat. I don’t wear knee length dresses so Im not suggesting short jackets would look good with it but this type of embellishment. You may need a coat the same length. You could certainly go for an embellished bag or shoes if that’s not your style.

Something like a leopard print might look good too depending on the rest of your style. It doesn’t need anything frou frou.

monsteronahill · 27/11/2022 17:05

Definitely not a white fur mini cape - too bridal / bridesmaid-y in my mind!

I think something like an embroidered jacket as PP has suggested, or something like a jewelled belt for the dress?

Tbh not everything needs to be jazzed up - keeping it simple can look incredibly classy! A lovely dress and pair of shoes, the right bag (something small and understated) and a touch of sparkle on your jewellery (simple necklace and earrings) would look lovely.

fingfong · 27/11/2022 17:18

Oh I'm liking the idea of something embellished, hadn't thought of that!

Maybe I should concentrate on some mega earrings and red lippy....

...and also thanks so much to everyone for suggestions - I lurk on S&B all the time ❤️

How about a sequin loose jacket or blazer like https://www.marksandspencer.com/relaxed-sequin-ruched-sleeve-blazer/p/clp60573242?color=CHAMPAGNE&prevPage=srp#intid=plpnavpidpg1pip6g2r3c1

Might get lots of use at this time of year

DisplayPurposesOnly · 27/11/2022 16:44

Are you Aunt Sarah?

Now have that scene in my head! 😆

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/11/2022 18:20

I've been eyeing up that jacket @FinallyHere but can't really justify it. If I was going to a winter wedding, I'd definitely be tempted.

FinallyHere · 27/11/2022 18:29

Oh, pity. if the budget is an issue then i expect there are no good either: so called 'bridal' cover ups which come in a range of colours

www.helenmoore.com/products/swatch

Given the choice, Id go for the jacket, I think it would get a lot of wear over time but see that that's no use if the budget issue is now. My mother, who was a bit of a fashion junkie used to tell me that 'once you have the clothes, the occasion will turn up. I hated that saying at the time, now i begin to see the point. :-)
