We may see Lady Louise become a working royal in her time, I suppose, or her brother. Depends on how things go with the Cambridges. We don’t yet know what their roles will be (except for George, of course).

AdaColeman · 24/11/2022 15:53

Zara and Peter Phillips might well keep Princess Alice's tiara for a while, as both families have girls. How fab to have an historic tiara to wear on your wedding day!

I'm not keen on the Duchess of Gloucester's silver cloak, it was far too "Star Wars costume" for my taste. I thought it overwhelmed her, and it dominated the photographs with Cyril and the Lord Mayor.
I saw some clips of Charles speaking at the State Banquet, and Cyril and Kate seemed to really hit it off together, which I thought was so nice.

Maireas · 24/11/2022 15:57

Lady Louise and James will not be working royals, Charles is going for the slimmed down version.
That Meander tiara was a gift to Anne from her mother, so I suspect it'll remain in her possession. It would be interesting to see if one of the Tindall girls wears it on their wedding day!

I don't think tiaras are limited to working royals are they? The Kent and Gloucester daughters have all worn one on their wedding days. Poor Louise though, if all she gets is Sophie's tiara.

I'm not sure about the Mayoresses' dress. The colour is nice but you can see her naval through the unforgiving fabric!

Maireas · 24/11/2022 16:15

That's right, that's why I'm thinking the Tindalls and probably the Phillips sisters will have good wedding day choices!
Birgitte is usually stylish, but I am in agreement about the Star Wars cloak!

I don't want a slimmed down family. They can go and get jobs and marry billionaires or whatever, but I do like massed ranks of minor royalty at events.
And if Edward doesn't get his Duke of Edinburgh title, I'll be cross.

Tiaras can be worn by anyone. You can just buy one and wear it. Traditionally you would wear "the family tiara" (the one owned by your parents) on your wedding day. Once married you would wear tiaras from your new husband's family collection on any tiara occasions. Obviously it was traditionally only the nobility who had a "family tiara".

For most women marriage would be the first time they wore a tiara. Royal women being an exception.

So Lady Diana Spencer wore the Spencer Tiara on her wedding day. This was a tiara owned by Earl Spencer (at the time her father) and passed on with the title. Diana and her sisters all wore it on their wedding day, but it passed to their brother when their father died. Confusingly Diana didn't give it straight back and wore it occasionally for state occasions, so many people don't realise it wasn't hers. Apparently her brother had to be quite firm to get it back when he needed it for his wife!

Further confusion is caused because several royal women since Diana haven't had a family tiara to wear on their wedding day so have borrowed one from the royal collection or been given one as a gift in the case of Sarah Ferguson, neither of her daughters wore that tiara when they married, and its whereabouts is unknown.

Nowadays there aren't many tiara occasions apart from your own wedding if you aren't royal or at least married to a hereditary peer.

KillingMeDeftly · 24/11/2022 16:43

Well yes I know anyone can buy a tiara and wear it but I was referring to royal heirlooms!

KillingMeDeftly · 24/11/2022 16:45

I suspect Fergie flogged her tiara to pay the bills a long time ago!

Also Louise is not necessarily limited to her Mum's tiara.

Beatrice and Eugenie both wore tiaras from the Royal collection (loaned by their grandmother) rather than their Mother's tiara. Zara wore her Mother's. Lady Sarah Chatto had a new one made especially.

These traditions are much more flexible now.

AdaColeman · 24/11/2022 16:58

Camilla has been out and about in East London today, giving away some of the many Paddington Bears which were left at the gates of various royal residences in September.
She wore one of her nice dark green dresses and her favourite black boots.

But the highlight of her outfit was her gorgeous Van Cleef & Arpels Lucky Animals Humming Bird brooch, set with lapis lazuli, malachite and onyx cabochons.

A total delight! I definitely want one!

That's believed to be the case.

KillingMeDeftly · 24/11/2022 17:00

Yes, I know what tiaras Eugenie and Beatrice wore. My comment was merely responding to other posters who were talking about bequeathing customs and ownership of royal jewels.

Peasepuddingbloodycold · 24/11/2022 17:07

In fact I can't think of anyone but Charlotte and the future wives of George and perhaps Louis who will one day wear any of the jewellery if Charles slims down things too much.

Yet again, I think what a shame it is about the Sussexes. Imagine having the four Wales and Sussexes adults as the next generation of working royals, with all of their children around at family events.

Sorry I wasn't intending to appear argumentative! Just responding, but I don't think there is a settled custom as things have changed so much. Plus as we only ever see the public side not what is said in private we don't know whether say Zara or Sarah Chatto were offered a Royal tiara and didn't want it or whether they weren't offered one.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 24/11/2022 17:10

Well we don’t know that they won’t be working royals! In 20 years they might be the only ones who want to do it!

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 24/11/2022 17:16

However, practically I’m not sure how that would even work...

My comments regarding tiaras et al was more to do with perceived seniority as it stands now looking forward vs. how it might actually look in practice down the years. Just saying there may be such an eventuality that it’s not the obvious children who step into the gap. I’m aware that there aren’t necessarily hard and fast rules as to who gets to wear one/the more important ones, but it stands to reason that the more senior (and hence the more likely to be working full time) the more likely one is to routinely wear it/them. I mean I would hope that Charlotte works within the family firm, for example, but there’s no guarantee that she will.

But I’ve no intention of arguing about it...just musings.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 24/11/2022 17:17

@eggandonion me too, as he/they were promised that!

My goodness Etsy stomachers.

Anyone remember putting clip on earrings on their shoes?

I don’t remember doing this but I do remember that in the 80s you could buy clips specifically to go on shoes with a bowl or diamanté etc to jazz them up for evening wear.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 24/11/2022 18:11

You can still get those! Almost got some for my wedding shoes several years ago...

MotherofPearl · 24/11/2022 19:25

Mathilde's style and colour choices mirroring Max's more and more! Or maybe it's the other way around? Anyway, it's funny they wore such similar outfits on the same day.

CPV in another Malina dress. I'm afraid it's now my second worst label after Erdem.

@AdaColeman Yes, that brooch!😍😍 And a lovely green Bulgari handbag. I was glad to see another bag, although I do like the DeMellier as well.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 24/11/2022 19:39

Heh I think there are only a couple of us that like the Erdem aesthetic...can’t remember who’s on the lonely bench with me on that one...but I quite like that dress CPV is wearing. I’d like it a lot more if it had a different colour with the green. It also fitting issues, could look a lot sharper IMO.

Serenster · 24/11/2022 19:44

I’m an Erdem fan, TangledWeb. Look at these - I’d love to have them in my wardrobe ❤️

Ah @Serenster it’s you!!

I must confess I even like the much derided mustard curtains/bedspread dress...and I liked that over-sized olive shirt/dress/sack that Meg wore.
