@MonsteraCheese I'll attach some different ideas for you. There's a few dressy options but they're all relaxed and laid back rather than full on glam.. hope this helps!

I've been invited to a Xmas 'wine and nibbles' afternoon at the house of one of DSs school friends and am not quite sure what to wear - the people going are a bit older and more casual so I'm not thinking sequins/leather but also not sure on knitwear as am thinking it may be quite warm.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

frillseeking · 14/11/2022 13:30

@jemimafuddleduck
River Island do really good quality knitwear. This is a great, easy option that comes in several colours. It's quite short so would work well length wise and it's got shape to it without being clingy.

H&M are killing it this season with their knitwear and this dress has been a sell out but has just come back in to stock. A more fitted shape but it's a beautiful hourglass shape that should flatter. It also comes in a stunning cerise colour.

Also love the belted detail on this one https://www.stories.com/engbp/clothing/dresses/knitted-dresses/product.belted-mini-knit-dress-black.1021468004.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIyuTA2eOt-wIVtIBQBh12nAv3EAQYAyABEgLUdd_D_BwE

Really enjoying all of these outfits! Bit of a long shot...but any ideas for teenage boys going to Senior Formal?

jemimafuddleduck · 14/11/2022 21:38

Thanks so much @frillseeking! I love the H&M cerise one and the oatmeal M&S one. I'm not sure how to style them as not keen on bare legs. Also what footwear to wear? I'm thinking boots, I currently have:

  • Chunky flat black ankle boots with a tan platform base
  • Oxblood flat Chelsea boots
  • Mid heel black suede croc print ankle boots
  • mid heel black leather ankle boots
  • Mid heel tan leather ankle boots.

I don't want to buy new shoes ideally!

Also - do you do any consultations? I have a fair amount of clothes but am rubbish at putting together outfits, is this something you can help with?

frillseeking · 15/11/2022 17:44

@McAvennie quite a difficult occasion to dress for as it's hard to know what the others will be wearing and as you say, being inside someone's house, you don't want to go for a big chunky knit and be sweating up! You also need something comfortable if you're going to be maybe sitting on the floor around a table having nibbles or up at a bar/ standing up in a kitchen. I'd definitely go for jeans and a blouse as this will look smart but not OTT if the others have gone for a casual vibe. I've attached some ideas for inspo. All of the looks are smart casual but there are details to elevate such as a silky chiffon fabric, metallic details, a smart suede boot or a stylish belt which I think is nice as the event is a xmas do

@17CherryTreeLane not my usual area but I'd look at River Island, Asos and boohoo man. Also next and M&S because of the variety of suits they offer and the range of sizes. I'd also look at eBay and Vinted as these are usually one wear items so something that a lot of people would sell on

Any tips for nailing a French tuck OP?

When I try it looks ridiculous but when I do it by accident it looks great... but I can't retrace my steps to recreate it 😂

By the way this has been my favourite stylist AMA thread, you've been great!

Brilliant advice, thank you! I've actually got a khaki satin shirt and some black jeans that I could wear but may have to treat myself to a new belt - don't suppose you've got any that you normally recommend?

frillseeking · 21/11/2022 16:59

@McAvennie glad you like the suggestions! There are loads of nice belts on the high street but I've attached some that I love. I think that a leopard belt might look nice with the khaki and black and add a little something extra. I love the Arket one as a great Gucci dupe. However, if money was no object, the Celine triomphe would be top of my list! https://www.celine.com/en-gb/small-triomphe-belt-in-smooth-calfskin-45AX63A01.38NO.85.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIg82Zw9--wIVEd7tCh1QrwxeEAQYASABEgLykvDD_BwE

@jemimafuddleduck suddenly in the last week I've noticed that tights are everywhere so don't worry about going bare legged- hosiery is haute again! Calzedonia do an incredible range of plain and patterned tights so they're well worth a look and for high quality, you can't beat Wolford and Falke. I also love these spotty ones from zara. They'd look great with the oatmeal dress and the chunky flat boots and a leather jacket and big scarf or a shearling coat for casual or with thicker black tights and the black heeled boots for evening. I'd pair the H&M dress with 20 deniers and the ox blood flat boots for day time and either of the black heeled boots for smart.

Yes I do appointments, I've been a bit quiet this last week here as it's been busy but I have a few spaces again. DM me if you would like to get in touch.

@monsteramunch I think it's one of those things you either nail first time or have to try and try again (a bit like applying false lashes!) make sure you're just tucking in the very front middle section of the top. This is a good YouTube guide m.youtube.com/watch?v=to8Hh5FkiSQ

I'm in the market for a nice jumper or top to wear over Christmas. Size 16. Would like a bit of sparkle but without being over the top. Something to wear when we have family over, normally wear with black jeans or trousers. Thank you!

jemimafuddleduck · 21/11/2022 21:02

@frillseeking thanks so much. I've PM'd you!

Isthisbatcountry · 21/11/2022 21:21

Loving this thread!!!
I'm off to Paris in Feb and I'm expecting it to be freezing. Can you recommend a versatile, nice, warm coat? I tend to wear Chelsea type boots or Dr martens. I'm after something that's a bit posher than my current duvet dog walking coat but something that's warm. All the warm coats tend to be quite casual. Colour wise I'd say black so it will go with most things but I'm open to suggestions 😁

frillseeking · 21/11/2022 23:02

@josieee45 some sparkly options for you. Hope that helps! ✨

@Isthisbatcountry thank you, glad you're enjoying the thread.
I've been eyeing up this gorgeous Hush coat and as it has a high wool content, it will be super warm. The black/ white herringbone design is classic but a nice update to a plain black or camel coat. https://www.hush-uk.com/morgana-relaxed-coat-black/006994-0456-12.html?foc=1586&fook=27a9bb69176613d1fec66c93d9971b1c&fos=gplauk&&utmmsource=google&utmmedium=cpc&svvtax3=UKENNShoppingAll+CategoriessBAll+Users&svvcampaignid=10825661474&utmmterm=&utmprodid=006994-0456-12&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0qXmirPA-wIVh6ztCh1aZggUEAQYASABEgL5zPDDBwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

The shearling coats we've talked about previously on the thread are also super warm. I've attached a Zara one. These look great with jeans or leather trousers but work just as well with a skirt as they've styled on the website.

Also love this military style coat from super dry which again has a high wool content and is also a maxi length for added warmth. www.superdry.com/category/1023/details/242399/long-military-wool-coat-navy love the navy with black buttons and navy/black is a super chic French fashion rule. (Also comes in black though..)

Ahh thank you!! I've actually been eyeing up the super dry one! Love the hush one, it's so different to anything I would normally pick. Definitely going to get one of these. Just need to decide which one. Thanks again!

@Isthisbatcountry One other thought is these amazing fleece lined thermal leggings from calzedonia www.calzedonia.com/uk/product/thermalleathereffectleggings-MIP037.html?dwvarMIP037_color019ZCOLCOLLD=019 super warm for cold days and look great with chunky flat boots

Could you suggest a present for my stylish SIL? We're doing secret Santa this year and I have a budget of £150. Hoping I could get something nice while there are some sales on
