@JamTartLover glad you're enjoying the thread.

Quite a tricky one as a lot of typical flat, walking shoes are very clunky and old fashioned. What about a brogue?

These are v highly rated in reviews and lots of customers commenting that they work with a skirt and dress too.

Or a Chelsea boot?

Thanks for the links, I will have a look!

frillseeking · 09/11/2022 20:16

@Featherstep a few more dresses for a smart lunch. I know you said you prefer short sleeves but I love the burgundy number and think it would look very elegant.

For the theatre, I'd maybe wear jeans or leather trousers with a blazer or even a nice leather skirt and flat boots

Thank you so much @frillseeking I love Reformation though I can't really afford it!
And yes, skirt and flat long boots are also one of my go to outfits. You're good! 😊

frillseeking · 09/11/2022 23:29

@Featherstep reformation is pretty spenny. Here are a few more affordable options that might work

@WanttoFindWorkLifeBalance I think if you feel the outfit looks great then go for it, you don't have to be a slave to the trends. However, if you are happy to buy something new, what about a velvet or leather legging/ trouser? https://www.mintvelvet.co.uk/products/black-velvet-skinny-leggings?variant=42128744120479&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4ve5x6qh-wIVTNPtCh37wQXOEAQYASABEgIGvfD_BwE

Or these from the Gap which are straight leg so quite current with the 90s vibe but still a slimmer bottom shape https://www.gap.co.uk/style/ls322165/r82588?gbraid=0AAAAAoodjJLdHeLn0reRrcFmrteS6I-l&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhczQQqqh-wIVV4BQBh0QzQlCEAQYASABEgJzyPDBwE&gclsrc=aw.ds#r82588&gbraid=0AAAAAoodjJLdHeLnn0reRrcFmrteS6I-l

Love the velvet leggings idea - thank you!

Amazing thank you @frillseeking I might order the Mylene Klass one! I'd never think to look at Next!

Thanks @frillseeking! Dress is from Seamstress of Bloomsbury. I actually have the allkind shoe boots! I wouldn’t have thought to put them with that dress so thanks!

@frillseeking Thank you so much, I've really enjoyed this thread 😊

FayeGovan · 10/11/2022 08:16

No shops seem to do much petite anymore, its all online, which i hate. Debenhams used to do some but they are gone. John lewis had none. Next range is tiny. M&s i never go in. Can you recommend anywhere left on thd high street that does a decent range for us shorties?

SunlightThroughTrees · 10/11/2022 08:25

frillseeking · 07/11/2022 18:14

@SunlightThroughTrees good question as lots of women struggle with cankles and there are some simple tips to help flatter the ankle area. The number one rule is to avoid any ankle straps as this will cut the leg in half and draw attention to the area. A pointed toe elongates so this would be a good option for a flat shoe, especially in a nude colour as this helps to lengthen the leg even more. For boots, go for something longer as an ankle boot will only draw attention to the area. Also avoid trousers that are cropped or capri length or anything tapered- something slightly wide leg or flared will be much more flattering and balance out your calves to ankle.

Thank you so much for answering my question, and all of the other questions on this thread. I’m finding it so helpful and interesting!

frillseeking · 10/11/2022 09:12

@Featherstep no me neither! I've bought things for the kids from the Myleene range before but only recently purchased for myself and have been really impressed. They also do so many different brands now (such as Ro and Zo) so it's worth a look

OP posts:
frillseeking · 10/11/2022 09:18

@FayeGovan this is a really good question and a problem for consumers. Retailers are quick to move the 'outlier' departments such as petite and maternity online and if you ask in store, the sales assistants are always quick to tell you to go online but this alienates those customers who prefer to try before they buy. Let me have a look into this for you

OP posts:
frillseeking · 10/11/2022 18:04

@marlowe5 i think crops can work for petites but you need to get the right pair. Make sure you get a flash of ankle. This works the same way as a v neck top- it draws the eye downwards and elongates. Go for high waisted and tuck in your top to make your body look as long as possible and if possible, wear heels to add height. I'd also suggest a tapered/ slim leg for a more flattering shape

What were the last 3 things you bought for yourself?

frillseeking · 10/11/2022 19:00

@mama202 ooh good question!

I got this fab leather jacket from M&S which fits like a glove and is really reasonable £ wise, am so pleased with it.

Black knitted dress from River Island to wear over the festive period

Sparkly tshirt bra also from M&S. I needed a new bra and this one felt v glam and a bit different

@FayeGovan it's quite hard to find out which stores stock petites. I know river island and new look have all the info on their store finder section but most shops don't. M&S have a store availability checker so you can see if they have petite in stock and that gives a good idea of how big their range will be in store. Next have a huge selection online but again don't advertise which branches hold stock- although I find if you call through to the store they are usually pretty good and helpful. I think the petite range at M&S is very good but most other places I would recommend are only online sadly - oasis, Karen Millen, asos, Boden.

OP posts:
frillseeking · 11/11/2022 09:25

Also free people, Wallis, Dorothy Perkins, Hobbs- very much depends on your style and what you are looking for but sadly it is predominantly online. Someone should open a petites emporium!

Can you point me in the direction of a shearling jacket? I'm also not sure how to style. Thank you!

turqlady · 11/11/2022 14:35

And one more request if you don't mind! A stylish Christmas jumper. Hate all the matchy matchy ones around these days! Is there a chic option out there?!

MonsteraCheese · 11/11/2022 17:40

Another request if you could! Casual night out clothes, 40th birthday meal in a pub for late 30s, 5'7 slim. Really not into dresses, more jeans/trousers/skirts. Prefer trainers and boots to sky high heels, want to look cool and relaxed rather than dressed up to the nines. I've not been out in so long that all my night out clothes have... disintegrated?!

frillseeking · 11/11/2022 17:44

@turqlady some stylish Xmas jumpers..

@frillseeking I'd love a nice jumper dress, perhaps with a roll neck, that I can wear with flat ankle boots and tights. Budget no more than £50 but would rather cheaper but good quality and doesn't make me sweat!
Size 8-10, 5'3 but conscious of my tummy and feeling a bit dumpy!

FayeGovan · 12/11/2022 22:03

Thank you @frillseeking

frillseeking · 13/11/2022 18:46

@turqlady real shearling jackets are £££ but there are some great faux options around and also lots of different styles now- longer line, aviator, biker... here are some options and styling inspo
