Does an epilator hurt?

usernotfound0000 · 29/10/2022 21:48

Considering getting myself one, so sick of shaving! Tried waxing but it hurt a lot. How painful is an epilator compared to waxing? Or are there other methods that give longer results than shaving that I haven't considered? Legs are particularly very hairy with dark hair, usually have to shave every 3-4 days over summer.

I found it painful, used it a few times and couldn’t get on with it. I don’t wax either.

chipsandpeas · 29/10/2022 21:58

i find it fine on my legs but cant cope doing underarms or bikini like

Purpleavocado · 29/10/2022 21:58

Gave me terrible ingrown hairs, ipl is much better

musttryharder84 · 29/10/2022 21:59

It is so much more painful than waxing

FlippertyGibberts · 29/10/2022 21:59

Like hell.

Mrsjayy · 29/10/2022 21:59

Yes its painful I bought 1 years ago hated it, you are basically mowing your legs!

TheFlis12345 · 29/10/2022 21:59

Get a Lumea IPL device, it’s life changing. Have a search on here, there are lots of threads about them and it sounds like your hair would be ideal for it.

Agony. They may have moved on but I got one for my birthday when I was about 14 and it was the worst present ever because I just couldn’t use it.
I stick with shaving.

IdontSayBlahBlahBlah666 · 29/10/2022 22:12

Like the fire of a thousand suns. Anything that comes with an ice pack to numb the area first should ring alarm bells.

I have been waxed, no problem. Gave birth with no pain relief, no problem. Epilator’s still make the back of my neck sweat 10 years later!

IncompleteSenten · 29/10/2022 22:13

I would rather be buggered with a cactus than epilate again.

Loserluck · 29/10/2022 22:14

It hurts. Save up for a Lumea/ IPL machine

ShouldntHaveBeenSoHasty · 29/10/2022 22:15

It is somehow the most painful thing on earth the first few times you do it. I would happily get more tattoos rather than epilate my legs again. It also gave me horrific ingrown hairs (which I secretly loved picking but left my legs looking like I’d been attacked).

Reverie83 · 29/10/2022 22:16

I dont find it painful, I do arms, legs, underarms and my chin!

ShouldntHaveBeenSoHasty · 29/10/2022 22:16

Definitely second Lumea - I’ve not used mine for years but having recently been in hospital and unable to shave my legs I can still see the patches I regularly Lumea’d as no hair grew back there.

LeroyJenkinssss · 29/10/2022 22:16

Just no. It hurts like no other thing could possibly hurt and am amazed at the bravery of women who managed to stick with it and do it themselves at home.

IPL however is wonderful.

Haudyourwheesht · 29/10/2022 22:17

Like buggery. I liked the effects but it's not worth it. Haven't touched mine since I got married.

MarmiteCoriander · 29/10/2022 22:19

Epilator was dreadfully painful!!!

Legs weren't too bad- but ankles and back of the knees not good. I've had them waxed maybe 10x in my life.

OMG- underarms- I just couldn't cope with the pain! Someone waxing them is quick- but an epilator is weird because you are trying to contort, stretch the skin to stop the machine grasping and clamping down on skin- whilst putting up with the pain and bleeding coming from some of the hairs being plucked out! 😩

I agree- I bought an IPL. No pain and more effective as a permanent solution.

JamMakingWannaBe · 29/10/2022 22:19

If your hair has never been ripped out by its roots before it's going to hurt.

Did you try waxing yourself or did you have it done at a salon?

Persevere with waxing / epilation. I have a wet and dry so I epilate in the shower. Not going to lie - the first time I did my underarms was SORE 🔥🔥, but now, not painful at all.

usernotfound0000 · 29/10/2022 22:20

I'm so glad I asked! It seems a resounding no to that then! I'll have a look into Lumea thanks as I've not heard of that.

You will feel the pain less every time you use it.

The first time I used it I remember I literally came out in a cold sweat it was too painful.

After several more uses it hurt less and now it's just an irritation.

I use a Braun Silk Epil. I think they're the best on the market.

dontblameme · 29/10/2022 22:30

I got my Lumea on Marketplace. Brilliant results after a few months regular use. Definitely recommend.

mondaytosunday · 29/10/2022 22:33

Yes.

lindyloo57 · 29/10/2022 22:48

I was going to say it hurts at first but after a time it's not so bad, I only do my legs from knee to ankle, and top of the legs near the bikini line

ZenNudist · 29/10/2022 22:55

I don't find it painful at all. I'd say if hurts less than waxing but over a longer period as waxing quite quick. Waxing professionally is a great finish but them you have regrowth period. Epilating you can just stay on top of and so you might be best to get waxed then stay on top of regrowth with an epilator. Very surprised other people say it hurts so much. Perhaps it's the make of epilator. Braun silk epil very effective and painless. I'd use s rechargeable wet dry one and just buy a basic model as the fancy one is just the same but with more silly attachments.

TheCrab9 · 29/10/2022 22:56

Ipl laser machine much better imo x
