Stan Smiths or Nike AF1?

I'm looking for my HG of trainers. I wear Asics for running, and day to day, but am looking for something I can wear with a skirt/dress that don't look too much like I'm going to the gym. Also want to wear them for a city break coming up.

I've worn in 2 pairs of Veja and love the look, but underfoot they are so uncomfortable if I'm walking a lot. Have tried Air & Grace and didn't like at all. Not liking anything at Skechers or Fitflop so have narrowed down to either Stan Smiths or AF1.

Any comments, tips or pointers much appreciated. I can order both and try both at home, but I can't really tell just by walking about my house....

I have Stan Smiths and they're so comfy! I wear with jeans and dresses so they do go with both.

Afterfire · 28/10/2022 09:27

Stan smiths are smarter and look better with skirts and dresses in my opinion.

RandomUsernameHere · 28/10/2022 09:33

I prefer Stan Smiths for adults. I associate AF1 with teenagers as every single teenager I see is wearing them all the time which puts me off wearing them myself!

latetothefisting · 28/10/2022 09:37

Agree that my Stan smiths are the comfiest trainers I've ever had and last forever!

I think AF1s might be slightly more on trend atm -I remember everyone had SS about 4 years ago, then everyone had AF1s, so it's probably time for a new "trend" trainer now whereas the SSs are just classic, which is fine by me.

The junior size go up to 5.5 so I save a fortune by buying those rather than the adult style if that is of any help? They're exactly the same.

Ok, I’ll offer the alternative view, having owned both. I can’t remember much about the comfort of my Stan smiths but they just didn’t excite me. I’m on my second pair of AF1s but specifically the shadow range, I find that the proportions are better. Very comfy but I have to buy a 5.5 when I’m otherwise always a 6 in Nike or Adidas

BusySittingDown · 28/10/2022 09:47

AF1s!

I have both but feel more middle aged in my Stan Smiths (I am, but that's not the point 😂 I like looking like mutton dressed as lamb!)

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 28/10/2022 10:01

Have to say I much prefer my AF1s. Get bonus points from teens staring at my box fresh ones!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 28/10/2022 10:02

Like a PP, I also had Stan Smiths but don't wear them as much.

Mercurial123 · 28/10/2022 10:17

I find AF1 really uncomfortable. Prefer Nike low rise Jumbo blazers.

ShesThunderstorms · 28/10/2022 10:26

I have both and love both. I think I'd probably go for Stan Smiths if I could only have one though, as I think they go with more. I could wear them with jeans, cold trousers, dresses and skirts, whereas the AF1s are a bit cooler/trendier and I don't think I'd wear them with a dress or smart trousers, more jeans or leggings. AF1s tend to run a little big fyi, I'm a 7 in absolutely everything and need a 6.5 in them.

ShesThunderstorms · 28/10/2022 10:27

Cold trousers! I meant cool trousers Grin

twilightcafe · 28/10/2022 10:30

AF1s are so comfy.
I have spent a few days mooching round Belfast in mine.

CraigDavid · 28/10/2022 10:33

For walking I wear Superga. I have a pair of Stan smiths too and the Superga are so much more comfortable.

nootsy · 28/10/2022 10:35

Some New Balance styles are more comfy than the SS & AF & more on trend.

nootsy · 28/10/2022 10:36

chunkier footwear is in fashion in general & SS are too clean & neat.

thedevilinablackdress · 28/10/2022 11:15

Stan Smiths (and many Adidas) are too flat for me. Not enough arch support

sunshinesallday · 28/10/2022 13:44

oh dear. I still don't know and there are pros and cons for both... basically if I want to look like the middle aged woman I am I should go for SS, and if I want to be more on trend (& dressed like mutton) I should go for AF1. Really I need both don't I?! When will the Black Friday sales start?!

Going against the grain, but both are incredibly dull and meh.

Oh well, that's us told then... Grin

KirstenBlest · 28/10/2022 15:23

Neither of them. Stan Smiths are uncomfortable and were everywhere about 15yrs ago. Nikes are overpriced and not good quality.

thedevilinablackdress · 28/10/2022 16:39

I'd go to some shops (Office, Schuh, whatever you've got nearby) and see which ones make you go "oooh, nice". Try them on, hopefully they are comfy. Buy those.
Or do same online but without the trying on.

sunshinesallday · 28/10/2022 18:29

I've ordered Nike blazers and New Balance RC30 and AF1 shadow and I can try them all at home and decide. Thanks everyone for all your comments and input :)

Stan Smiths are very comfy but not trendy now, after being all over five years ago.
AF1s are very Gen Z.
New Balances are very comfy! The 530s and 327s are very on trend.

Creativecake · 29/10/2022 07:16

New Balance are much nicer/cooler

SellFridges · 29/10/2022 07:23

I have both. In fact, I have a couple of pairs of both, plus some NB’s. The New Balance don’t go with dresses or skirts at all. SS go very well with dresses and I wear them to work with cropped trousers etc. AF1’s are great with either jeans or dresses but more casual.

Im a 6 and can buy kids AF1’s which saves a bit. They are never in the sales.

I don’t think I’m helping!
