Please can we talk tights?

I like to wear dresses to work with boots and tights. When my dress has black in it then it's easy - I wear black tights and black boots. But I always get stuck when the dress isn't black.

So for example I have a navy blue dress with white dots, a light blue dress with a pink pattern, a navy dress with a red pattern...what do I wear in terms of tights? Navy tights with navy boots seems like too much navy. Navy tights with brown boots can look a bit odd. What combinations would you wear? So much easier in summer when I just use a bit of Sally Hansen airbrushed legs and I'm good to go!

I think navy and black looks good so that's easy for me, I'd just wear black opaques and black boots. Light blue is a tricky one, is it definitely a winter dress or should it be kept for bare legs in summer? Would sheer black tights work?

I think it also depends on what shoes you wear. I tend to just wear black tights this time of year. But thinking about it, all my A/W dresses tend to have black in them anyway.

I used to think that navy tights and navy boots were too much navy but once I tried it on with the dress I wanted to wear, it worked really well (I think so anyways!).

I have a navy dress, I usually wear with thin black tights like 10 or 20 denier because the main colour of the tights is 'leg colour' but darker, they don't stand out and make the dress look weird.

What about wearing nude tights?

I’ve been having the same dilemma! I decided that navy boots might be better but trying to find a decent pair of the blasted things is really tough.

I don't have a problem with navy and black but maybe I'm clueless or colourblind

I wear black tights with pretty much anything. If the colours are brighter and not black I would tend to go for sheerer tights (not as ideal for winter granted).

Whilst I’m here though I am looking for a very specific shade of brown tights to go with more autumnal shades of clothing and I cannot find them so if anyone knows where please let me know!

I’d go for a electric blue pair of tights, or maybe turquoise.
I'm currently wearing a bright blue dress with a mushroom design and purple tights with knitted-in stripes. I had black ankle boots on today.
I think it’s colourful, but not OTT.

Thank you, there are some great ideas here (plus I'm glad I'm not the only one with this dilemma as I'd been feeling quite daft for not figuring it out). I'll try going a bit more sheer with either black or blue tights as I can see it's the opaqueness of the tights that make them look a bit wrong now. Must look for some ladder resist ones though as I can't stand to be stuck in laddered tights all day at work. May branch out to other colours too like turquoise if I'm feeling brave!

I love navy and wear it all the time, including navy trainers but I just can’t stand navy boots, I don’t know what it is about them!

I don't really like sheer tights so I tend to wear black opaques and black boots with any dark coloured dress. I've got a few pairs of brighter coloured opaques but I don't tend to wear them to work.

A pastel coloured dress like light blue or pink I'd keep for summer and wear without tights

Wow those calezedonia tights are amazing, @Sager. Do they last well please or do they tend to ladder easily? I wear natural tights & shoes - it’s maybe a bit early Kate Middleton / not very fashion, but very flattering. I like Aristoc high shine tights

Charcoal/grey?

If the dress doesn’t look good with dark tights then maybe it’s not suitable for autumn/winter eg light blue with pink sounds like summer wear

I think black often is not the right choice but that we just get used to it. Falke brown and navy merino tights are so dark that they don't look like coloured tights can sometimes look, they aren't whimsical.

I wear grey tights.

I have a navy dress with white dots, I usually wear brown knee boots with it.
