If you are in your forties/ fifties, what outfits make you feel good?

I’m in my forties, and the outfits that made me look and feel good ten years ago, just don’t any more. I’m a little rounder ( size 12), a little tireder looking, a little more clueless about nowadays styles, a little less confident about my body and style.

There seem to be loads of women of my age who have nailed their style and look great, and I would love some ideas of looks and shops to try. Can’t bear Instagram or similar, as it makes me feel even less confident.

What types of outfits make you feel great? Any shops you’d recommend?

I have the wide legged trousers with the white stripe. I really like them. I also wear them with black. Can anyone recommend a black crew neck type jumper, quite roomy, possibly cashmere or similar quality?
Also, would a brighter coloured jumper go with the trousers? I have a feeling that the white stripe might throw the lion off a bit?

Look off.

@Fantine you could layer a white crew neck t shirt underneath a black or bright jumper, so just a touch is showing at the neck & roll up the sleeves to show a white cuff to link the trouser stripe. Or another possibility is a white shirt underneath with the shirt tails showing.
M&S have some black & white stripy Cashmere & Merino jumpers if you like stripes. H&M have a lightweight black cashmere crew neck online that's a little slouchy. The main problem with M&S is I always find the Cashmere far too neat & high necked & end up-sizing several times.
If you're concerned with a bright top not going with the striped trousers wear a toning jacket. I often wear black/white trousers with a Whistles Moss Green Cashmere Jumper & a Khaki Protected Species Jacket. Ok, not bright, but you get the idea.

I bought the M&S Autograph black cashmere crew neck @FANTINE2 - classic shape, decent weight. I'm pleased with it.

Thank you both. Some good ideas and will have a look at the jumper

(Just read Cantonet's post. I found the jumper I linked fine size-wise.)

Whatever I find in charity shops, so quite eclectic!

like dresses.

@oneofthegrayfolk (great name btw) I am a great fan of charity shops too! I wear quite a mix/eclectic style, too I think. I look really dull in a lot of classic styles, so need to mix up basics with either more interesting shapes/cuts, statement or retro pieces or accessories. Fashion and style should be fun, though.

I find M&S knitwear is quite short on the arms on me. I have one of their cashmere cardigans, but it has not lasted brilliantly, wearing thin on the elbows after a couple of years.
