If you are in your forties/ fifties, what outfits make you feel good?

I’m in my forties, and the outfits that made me look and feel good ten years ago, just don’t any more. I’m a little rounder ( size 12), a little tireder looking, a little more clueless about nowadays styles, a little less confident about my body and style.

There seem to be loads of women of my age who have nailed their style and look great, and I would love some ideas of looks and shops to try. Can’t bear Instagram or similar, as it makes me feel even less confident.

What types of outfits make you feel great? Any shops you’d recommend?

Forgot to say I'm 50

53, size 14-16. I feel at my best in my winter uniform of grey or navy wide legged trousers or dark wide legged jeans with a fitted cashmere or merino jumper, brogues and a crombie coat. I like not really having to think about what to wear.

Not dissimilar to my 'uniform'.
I also don't like to worry about what I'm wearing & I hate wearing uncomfortable clothes.
Although i've come to the sad conclusion that too tight jeans are a barometer to how fat I'm getting.
Nrby drawstring jeans are fantastic but I think they've stopped selling them. I have a pair from last year & they look like boyfriends but have a soft towelling lining.

hoochyhag · 14/10/2022 13:18

You naughty lot, I've just ordered some wide striped trousers from m and s and two avalon t shirts from hush. Very inspired by this thread Grin

TimBoothseyes · 14/10/2022 13:44

Mid 50's size 12 -14 5 foot 6.
today I'm wearing slim fit jeans, oversize shirt, baggy jumper and a pair of Converse Hi-Tops....my clothing of choice. I don't wear dresses, unless I'm going to a formal function and I only have 1 pair of shoes, I prefer Cons and boots.

LunaTheCat · 14/10/2022 15:05

57 here and I love dresses.
I am short and size 12 to 14.
dresses are flattering as don’t break me in half.
I wear them with Birkies in summer and over winter Blundstone boots and socks.
My dresses are mid calf or lower usually.
I think tights are the work of the devil so in winter I wear the boots with thick socks made merino and merino slip under dress.
I have summer and winter dresses.

ChaToilLeam · 14/10/2022 15:11

I’m 4’11 and a size 16. Hourglassy, but perimenopause has thickened up my middle a bit. Anyway, I love dresses. Got some lovely velour ones from Gudrun Sjöden for the cold months, to wear with tights and boots, and cotton ones to wear with sandals in summer. Plus, I have started making my own stuff so can tailor to fit. I’ve got silver hair now but suit strong colours, as well as black and grey, and I have always got bright lipstick on. Get many compliments from the young folks even though I’m 51 now.

dudsville · 14/10/2022 15:12

I find I'm most comfortable knowing that what's in my wardrobe is fewer items than before, and they are all the best quality I can afford and fit well. I've completely embraced the looser fitting stuff and layering.

BasiliskStare · 14/10/2022 15:12

So I shall sit quietly but M&S Jeggings in indigo do a decent interpretation of skinny jeans & are so comfortable and as cheap as chips - I have in a few colours for every day wear, but shall be looking out for wide leg / stripe trousers from them.

Always4Brenner · 14/10/2022 15:16

Straight jeans and t shirts.

Whistlesandbell · 14/10/2022 15:31

Can someone post a picture of the wide leg striped trousers mentioned, I’m having trouble imagining them?
Thank you.

Tabbouleh · 14/10/2022 15:43

Pix are posted upthread. John Lewis also has some wide leg stripes for those who find M and S sold out. Sorry I find it hard to post pix from my phone and on the Tube.

Cantonet · 14/10/2022 15:47

My local pretty small M&S had lots of the red & other colours in yesterday, even though they were sold out online in petite.

Tabbouleh · 14/10/2022 15:52

I just said " Red trousers yes or no" to DH and he said very emphatically " No". :)

I like them on that instagrammer but am struggling to picture how they will look on my currently quite Weeble- y body. 51, 5"7 and size 12.

JMAngel1 · 14/10/2022 16:06

@alloalloallo
ooh could you link that NL jumper dress please?

JMAngel1 · 14/10/2022 16:13

50, size 6-8
I tend to stick to a uniform - I have numerous asymmetric neckline close fitting tops which I tuck into either wide legged trousers or pencil style wrap midi skirts.
So today I’m wearing a brown top with a burgundy leather midi wrap skirt and brown knee high suede boots. Finished off with an oversized camel coat and a brown high cross body padded bag.
I also just found some amazing flare low rise jeans which make me look more curvy than I am. They’re lovely with draped shoulder out jumpers and pointed toe shoe boots - very Loralei in Gilmore Girls 😂
I also like a jumper dress - midi to long and relatively form fitting but not tight.
I did Kibbe and since confirming my style (Soft Dramatic) I find getting dresses a lot easier. I don’t do voluminous baggy patterned dresses or drawstring waist trousers for example.

WizardOfUK · 14/10/2022 16:21

I wear what suits me not what's in fashion. At the moment I like boot cut jeans, boots and a tailored white shirt or simple jumper.

Pigeon31 · 14/10/2022 16:24

Straight jeans, shirt, and a blazer that fits.

Windtunnel · 14/10/2022 16:30

@Pigeon31 I was going to say I was in italy recently and a lot of jackets over skinnier jeans going on, looked so stylish, highly wearable for 40s/50s women.
They had nice handbags and shoes obv, it's italy, for a finishing touch.

Windtunnel · 14/10/2022 16:36

I was going to say an above the knee dress thick ish tights and DMs makes me feel good, not too boring.

I'd wear those wide legged trousers with a short top I guess if they didn't make my waist and hips look squidgy. Worried M and S is old though!
Jumpsuits.
Leather jacket.
Nice necklace.

Gonna look at Zara for ideas as an alternative to M&S

TattiePants · 14/10/2022 16:38

I'm another one who regularly wears M&S side stripe trousers. I have 3 pairs already and have the red on order. Planning on teaming them with some wool jumpers from Uniqlo in plain colours and my usual trainers.

weebarra · 14/10/2022 16:47

I'm a fat, short, 45 year old.
I wear a lot of jeans and nice jumpers, or (I know!) tunics and leggings with doc boots.
My favourite tunics are by Finnish brand PaaPii.

BloodyHellKen · 14/10/2022 16:56

I am still wearing my clothes from 10 years ago in some cases, although I do buy new clothes as well!! I still wear the same style as I always have as that is what suits my build (tall and thin) - jeans/trousers and jumpers/t-shirts, sometimes a skirt.

If I'm looking for style inspiration I like thatsnotmyage.com

SwordToFlamethrower · 14/10/2022 17:05

Same outfits I wore in my 20s and 30s

Purpleavocado · 14/10/2022 17:07

I have a pair of those side stripe trousers and feel a bit short and dumpy in them. I''m 5'3 normally a 12 in M&S but have a 10 short as the 12 reg was huge.
I love the uniqlo stetch trouser legging things, they are so comfy, and also next joggers - both of which I saw on this board, and now live in.
I may order an Avalon tshirt though, they look really nice.
