Has anyone got any suggestions for what I can do with my thick coarse frizzy hair, it's become really uncontrollable and is really getting me down (literally as it's so heavy!)

I've tried cutting it shorter and I've tried layers but both add even more volume which I want to avoid as it doesn't suit me. Straightening it takes longer to do than it lasts in my hair.

I dream of curls but despite trying the curly girl routine and various sulphate free and curly orientated products it never gets more than wavy and by day two it is just thick frizz.

I've actually googled wigs this week with a vague idea of shaving it off and giving up.

Any hairstyle/hair cut/product ideas would be brilliant.

Get it permed.

Talk to a hairdresser about it as there are different options, but a perm will give you manageable curls.

You can also have a perm that straightens your hair, it's really common for people with afro hair to have a straightening perm but with that fabulous mane I think soft curls would look fab.

OldWivesTale · 13/10/2022 03:57

It's beautiful as it is.

k1233 · 13/10/2022 04:20

@Hanswurst I like the L'Oreal mythic oil - the rich or nourishing one. Or argan or Moroccan oil.

Hanswurst · 13/10/2022 05:06

@k1233 thank you, I’ll give those a go 😊

Ladyofthelake53 · 13/10/2022 05:07

Mines very similar but longer and auburn but very course abd thick and tending to curl like yours.

I don't shampoo I co wash blot dry comb through and put serum or oil on when damp and just leave it

I sympathise, it a complete chore to wash and I only do it once a week sometimes every 2.

Thinking I'm going to go shorter for practicality really mines elbow length

Ladyofthelake53 · 13/10/2022 05:10

Bleach reincarnation mask is excellent also

Chloefairydust · 13/10/2022 05:11

I second the curly girl method.

  • never brush dry hair
  • silk pillowcase/ hair bonnet
  • try a conditioner to wash hair with instead of shampoo
  • use a micro fibre towel
  • when hair is wet, brush in some curl cream (or conditioner) to moisturise the curls and scrunch and then leave to dry naturally

Wow thanks for all the replies I will work through the ideas. A hairdresser for curly hair sounds like a great idea, I hadn't thought of that. I've not been to a hairdresser for years as they always look very daunted by my hair and insist on either cutting it wet or dry but straightened, neither of which end up with a cut that works once I've washed and dried it. I've never gone to the same hairdresser more than once.

Any tips for how to find a curly hairdresser? Do they advertise this or do I have to ring round and ask?

(oh and it's just lighter on the top naturally not grey or bleached but the top layer is in worse condition than the under layer for some reason. Dye doesn't work in my hair, it's like wire it just repels colour)

What city are you in?

I can recommend a curl specialist in Bristol and a salon in Manchester if either of those are near you?

I was in a really similar position and got s proper curly cut end started using Only Curls products and following their how to videos and it was game changing

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/10/2022 05:56

There is some brilliant advice out there for looking after curly hair eg this article. I used to use Aussie miracle oil on dd’s hair, which is great for her hair and mine, but she can’t be bothered anymore. www.cosmopolitan.com/style-beauty/beauty/news/a34577/curly-hair-hacks/

I saw someone mentioning perming. Dd has had her hair keratin straightened as I refused to reverse perm, which does give a much straighter effect than the keratin treatment. Before she did this, the hairdresser very slightly layered her hair and cut into it so it was a little less thick and didn’t have that A effect. The curls bounced more after that.

OldTinHat · 13/10/2022 06:09

What beautiful hair!

Mine is similar, not as long though, sadly. After leaving it for years, I walked into loads of hairdressers asking if they cut curly hair. I found one that I liked the lady in, she cut it and I now have curls and not frizz! Its only taken me 51yrs...

Like a PP said about her daughter, I never comb or brush it, I just use my fingers through it after washing. It gets knotted at the nape sometimes but I can tease that out without a comb. I don't blow dry it either. It will take hours to dry but no frizz!

ittakes2 · 13/10/2022 06:23

I have the exact same hair as you I used to have that permant straightening treatment which takes out fizz.

Not what you want to hear I’m sure but I personally think it’s glorious! Please don’t cut that wonderful mane 😩 I’m sure someone more helpful will be along soon, with brilliant ideas on how to tame the frizz a little though

Agree 100%!

I would love your mane, it's gorgeous. My hair is a similar length, brown with about 60+% white, including pure white wings at the front that I love. However, my hair has always been very fine, but very thick - would take a hairdresser best part of an hour to dry! Now, not sure why, menopause, medication etc it is coming out by the handful and has become really thin so I see my scalp in certain areas - I am devastated, it's always been my best feature. So I am very very jealous of your gorgeous steely locks. To me it just looks like it needs a trim and some conditioning treatments. Enjoy it - it's lovely. X x x.

flipstic · 13/10/2022 06:34

I think it's great hair! While you're waiting for a cut/researching places to go, get a deep conditioner and use it a couple of times a week. The garnier tubs are good and £7 full price but often on offer. Then comb through a bit of curl cream when it's wet, wrap in an old t shirt for a bit, scrunch in a load of gel and dry with a diffuser. Bet it'll add definition to the curls and you'll like it more!

Popvan · 13/10/2022 06:35

Mayonnaise to take out the dryness.

muddlingthrou · 13/10/2022 06:42

I have similar textured hair. I swear by umberto giannini curl gelly. I would deep moisturise like pp have suggested and plait overnight.

muddlingthrou · 13/10/2022 06:43

To be clear scrunch with the gel and let it air dry. Plait overnight when it's dry.

ABrotherWhoLooksLikeHellMugYou · 13/10/2022 06:45

Would love to see update photos when you're happier with your Barnet!

SpanishSteps123Ole · 13/10/2022 07:37

Cutting it off would be criminal! This is a head of hair that many would be jealous of, frizz and all!
I never got on with the curly method and gave it a good 3 months. I found that my hair looked best fresh out of a wash or maybe the second day but this business of making curls last 5 to 7 days just never worked for me personally.
If you want to make it curlier, try new products. I like Aussie, Frizz Ease and Cantu. Like PP said you will need to wet and condition or apply curl cream or both every morning.
I find straightened hair much lower maintenance than looking after curls. I have Babyliss big hair styler and it makes a blow dry a doddle even for someone with weak noodle arms.

TippyToesKnows · 13/10/2022 08:04

@SeaThingChild Shame you're too far away for Trepadora salon as they're amazing, but I think their products would really help you if you do a Google or look them up on Facebook

SeaThingChild · 13/10/2022 08:24

@PeloFondo your hair looks beautiful, I can see that I do need to get a proper curly cut.

@Hooper56 I love all of those styles and I go through cycles of cutting my hair short and hoping it will go like that but it just forms a giant bushy mushroom, it never looks like those cuts.

I'm in Sheffield but can easily go to Leeds or Saltaire so I'll look into those, thanks.

I do use oils but I don't find they make much difference, my hair just absorbs them. I can use half the bottle and still not see much change except an oily pillow.

Your hair is a lot like mine in terms of texture and thickness. Have you tried Aveda products? Their conditioner makes such a difference to the condition of my hair.

Charleymouse · 13/10/2022 10:47

I would try Another Kind off West Street.
Probably Patrice would be your best bet, alternatively Verity has always done a great job with my DD curly hair.

buttons123456 · 13/10/2022 11:14

@SeaThingChild .. you have my hair but I learnt to tame it years ago

What have you tried ? I presume you have a diffuser . Your hair is super curly , you just need product and technique

loottie · 13/10/2022 13:29

My local Toni & Guy has a curly hair cutter (it's on their profile when you book a haircut) so maybe your local one has one too?
