Has anyone got any suggestions for what I can do with my thick coarse frizzy hair, it's become really uncontrollable and is really getting me down (literally as it's so heavy!)

I've tried cutting it shorter and I've tried layers but both add even more volume which I want to avoid as it doesn't suit me. Straightening it takes longer to do than it lasts in my hair.

I dream of curls but despite trying the curly girl routine and various sulphate free and curly orientated products it never gets more than wavy and by day two it is just thick frizz.

I've actually googled wigs this week with a vague idea of shaving it off and giving up.

Any hairstyle/hair cut/product ideas would be brilliant.

Beautiful hair OP Im jealous

If it were me Id have a good trim. There are so many anti frizz treatments out there too . Please dont layer it its so thick. I LOVE IT just some tlc and I bet you’ll see a huge difference

LadyPoison · 12/10/2022 22:32

Your hair is like mine but maybe a bit more curly. Not a lot in it though.

My saviour is an undercut. It's taken out a lot of the extra volume and made the quantity so much more manageable. You can't see it unless I wear my hair up. It's no longer still wet hours later and I don't have to use half a bottle of "product" each time I wash it. I am fairly generous with leave in conditioner on the ends which tames the frizz into soft more defined curls.

I'm going to say it again You can't see it unless I wear my hair up! I''ve waited years to be able to do that as it's always been too heavy before and nothing would hold it.

Threelittlelambs · 12/10/2022 22:40

Ask on FB for a curly or spiral cut hairdresser -
they make a huge difference to your hair.

DD had an under cut and lost half her hair and still had twice as much as everyone else.

DD goes once and year to get hers cut so not too much maintenance needed.

Then - you need to get the silicone out of your hair and it may take a while - find a silicone free shampoo and conditioner. Lloyds sell the cheapest one at £1 a bottle it’s brown bottle.

Do not brush your hair other than pre washing and then give it a good brush - keeps the frizz at bay. I don’t know anyone with curly hair who brushes it

You may also need a silk pillow to sleep on

Small changes will make a big difference

Here's mine before and after a cut

Beautiful hair ❤️

Opine · 12/10/2022 22:58

Near to you is The curl clinic in Leeds.

Neveranynamesleft · 12/10/2022 22:58

Please do not get it cut.

A shampoo company may pay you good money to model for 'before' and 'after' pictures.

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/10/2022 23:01

Oh give over, that is truly magnificent hair. Just on the grey/white turn now, long locks also, and you’ve really cheered me up.
yes, it looks a bit dry but there must be hundreds of products out there to deal with that. Book an appointment with a stylist with a good rep and get some advice.
In the meantime, be very smug indeed about your spectacular mane. 😃

AlwaysLatte · 12/10/2022 23:04

It's lovely. I'd definitely not ever brush it - otherwise instant frizz. Mines curly too and I put a wide toothed comb through it whilst it's got conditioner on it. Then I rinse it really well and put serum on it and leave it to dry naturally. Have you tried Tigi Bedhead Resurrection? It's great for dry hair.

rosiebl · 12/10/2022 23:30

Which town/city in Yorkshire OP?

Wow thanks for all the replies I will work through the ideas. A hairdresser for curly hair sounds like a great idea, I hadn't thought of that. I've not been to a hairdresser for years as they always look very daunted by my hair and insist on either cutting it wet or dry but straightened, neither of which end up with a cut that works once I've washed and dried it. I've never gone to the same hairdresser more than once.

Any tips for how to find a curly hairdresser? Do they advertise this or do I have to ring round and ask?

(oh and it's just lighter on the top naturally not grey or bleached but the top layer is in worse condition than the under layer for some reason. Dye doesn't work in my hair, it's like wire it just repels colour)

@SeaThingChild are you in London? I can recommend one

Oblomov22 · 12/10/2022 23:48

God. Your hair is fucking amazing. Dead jealous. You just need help to control it, and style it, not that hard.

GooseberryCinnamonYogurt · 13/10/2022 00:02

It looks very dry, I would opt for a really good conditioner, probably one you leave in. Then maybe get a cut, have some shape cut into it. Perhaps a few highlights.

GooseberryCinnamonYogurt · 13/10/2022 00:04

Also try a silk pillow case, does wonders for the hair.

DuchessOfMuck · 13/10/2022 00:07

I think your hair is amazing! I would love proper curls like yours. There are specific groups on Facebook that have very good knowledge on curly hair. Maybe have a look.

From a quick look I think your hair is a little dull with too much moisture hence the frizzyness. You need a clarifying shampoo to remove the build up. Try a good protein mask.

Only add products when hair is soaking wet to get it evenly distributed. Only brush or comb when you are conditioning. In-between you can finger comb but it's best to leave it alone.

For night you could try doing a pineapple or wearing a satin bonnet.

This is a great site to help work out your hair type. www.naturallycurly.com/quiz

Not what you want to hear I’m sure but I personally think it’s glorious! Please don’t cut that wonderful mane 😩 I’m sure someone more helpful will be along soon, with brilliant ideas on how to tame the frizz a little though

That is what I think too! It is really, really beautiful hair. Stunning, head turning pre Raphaelite hair.

I would love to have hair like that !
I have very curly fine hair, and the only thing that helps with general fluffy frizz that I've tried is the Hershesons everything cream. I have just bought product from Champo that has similar claims but I haven’t tried it yet. But my hair does need re wetting or washing each day, to have nice ringlets rather than fluff. Curls do need daily attention to keep definition, if that is what you want.

k1233 · 13/10/2022 00:20

Another curly hairer here. Presently, you have the tent/triangle look going on. You need layers to get better shape. I have really long layers - the shortest is jaw length, overall length is mid back. My hair is fine but thick.

Oil has been a game changer for me. Proper hair oil, not coconut etc (found those drying). I oil the crap out of mine. I have a heavier oil, used when wet, and a lighter spray in oil.

Finding a good hairdresser is key. I work with mine on length and balance ie how the layers are distributed through the hair. At one point the bottom looked scraggly as there was too much variation between the layers and the length. Length was brought back a little to get the balance right (for me).

Hanswurst · 13/10/2022 00:28

@k1233 what oils do you use please? I also find coconut oil incredibly drying!

Hooper56 · 13/10/2022 00:30

Do you like any of these styles ? I think it could look amazing !

sjpkgp1 · 13/10/2022 01:04

I've got exactly your hair. I didn't always have it, it was thick but straight-ish when I was a child, then got wavy then frizzier then curlier as time has gone on. I must admit, I normally tie it up. Of all of the treatments I have ever known, the best one is combing it through properly to get all of the dead hair out, then going down to the swimming pool and having a swim in coldish water and letting it dry naturally, small amount of towelling so it is not sopping wet, but then just leave it. I put my glasses on my head to hold it back. I then get ringlety non-frizzy curls, which I have then scrunched up with a bit of product to encourage. I think you always want the hair you can't have, but you have to go with what you've got.

Geppili · 13/10/2022 01:07

My god, your hair is glorious. Just use good oils on it and don't cut layers but have a good cut. Also supplement your diet with some good oils too.

B0J0ker · 13/10/2022 01:35

@SeaThingChild - I know Yorkshire is HUGE, but if you're in West Yorkshire then Michael at XS Hair in Saltaire (BD18) is AMAZING.

I have similar hair to yours and for the first time ever I felt good about it after getting a cut from Michael. His cut was brilliant, his advice was great and he just made me feel like my hair was gorgeous! He's excellent with curly hair (his wife has similar apparently so he completely understands our frustrations!)

Saltaire is also a World Heritage Site as it’s a well-preserved Victorian Mill village so you’d easily be able to spend a day exploring if you did make the journey. There’s cafes, quirky shops, a restored mill with more shops in and a David Hockney exhibition so stacks of stuff to do there (apologies if you know all this already!)

parsniiips · 13/10/2022 01:53

It needs a curly specific professional cut and treatment to help the condition of it, and regular maintenance. Don't give up, just get some proper help to
Look after it!

WooWooWinnie · 13/10/2022 02:09

Not sure where abouts in Yorkshire you are but you could either try The Curl Clinic in Leeds or in Manchester there’s Vicky Queen of Curls, Callum King of Curls or Kayla at McCrory hair.
