@Chevyimpala67
I don't particularly want to smell the same as everyone else tbh

I’ve heard this said a lot but the logic confuses me. The most sold perfume ever (Chanel No 5) has 5% market share. Only half the population are women, and only a fraction of women even wear perfume. So even the most popular perfume is only worn by a tiny fraction of the population, and it’s unlikely that you’ll meet someone wearing it on any particular day. Add the fact that fragrances smell different on different people as they’re altered by skin chemistry. So I feel just wear the scent that you like, don’t be worried about smelling like “everyone else”.

I grew up in the era of Georgio, poison and opium. Believe me, everyone wore them. Some years later it was angel and prada.
If I like something I'll wear it but I'm not a fashion follower at all. Never understood the love for chanel no 5 nor angel.

MissBattleaxe · 15/01/2023 10:41

Yes, I've never quite taken to Chanel No 5. I have a theory that a lot of men buy it for women because it's the only one they'd heard of. Not saying women don't choose it themselves, but if you ask a man who knows nothing about perfume to name a perfume, he'll say Chanel No 5. My Mum got it off her husband for Christmas for years despite never asking for it. She had to ask him to stop in the end.

CorneliaStreet · 15/01/2023 11:12

I’ve got a mix of designer and niche perfumes, plus a few cheapies from M&S, Next, etc. I agree with @Chevyimpala67 that back in the 80s and 90s everyone seemed to wear the same designer perfumes (I remember when everyone seemed to be wearing L’Eau d’Issey and Dune) but there are so many perfume launches these days that everyone has so much choice. I love Armani Si, which is available everywhere and has has loads of flankers, but I don’t think I’ve ever actually smelled anyone else wearing it.

My main issue with some of the niche houses is the prices (looking at you Killian), but many independent perfumers manage to make interesting, unique scents while keeping prices more reasonable - see Gallivant and 4160 Tuesdays etc.

I don’t get the love for No. 5 either. Even Chanel itself has better perfumes, never mind everyone else!

SOTD is MMM When the Rain Stops. Seemed apt today.

Rebel2023 · 15/01/2023 11:30

whatausername · 15/01/2023 00:53

A silly q from a novice, are niche fragrances (i.e. fragrances that are by perfume specialists rather than designers and celebs capitalising on their brand) more expensive than mainstream high-street perfumes?

Oh, and second question, how do you get to experience them unless you happen to live near them? Buying blind is just too risky!

I always look for samples but I'm a nightmare for blind buying! TBH the more I wear one brand, the more I know by the notes and description if I'll like it
Kyse is a good example for me, it's mostly gourmands and she includes samples with purchases or you can buy them. I know if it's Kyse, I will love it
Same with Clean, I like everything they do

Blind buys I've loved
Byredo gypsy water
MMM beach walk
MMM bubble bath
Kyse - every single one Blush
4160 Tuesdays sexiest scent
Clean - all blind buys
Jil sander sun
Bobbi brown beach

Mrcpy · 15/01/2023 11:48

My point about Chanel No 5 was just an illustrative one, ie the numbers don’t add up to “everyone wearing” anything. I understand that there are trends (I didn’t know about them as I was a child in the 90’s) but if you stay away from the 1-2 most popular perfumes in each generation, then there’s no reason to pick niche purely to avoid smelling like other people. There’s so much to choose from, like @CorneliaStreet says. And not many people wear perfume every day. Even if Chanel were the only perfume brand in the world, you probably wouldn’t meet someone every day wearing coco, gardenia or le lion.

Well we shall have to agree to disagree then.
I like very very few high street perfumes.
It's a personal thing.

I've worn perfume every day since I was 13

Smells like cat pee to me!

Interesting debate about niche versus designer perfumes. I’m in the “wear what you like” camp and don’t worry to much about what other wear. That said, the one scent - and all its copies- I avoid (and don’t get one with in any event) is BR540. I smell it often when I am out and about, especially in London. I think it’s the strong sillage - when I get on a tube I can immediately tell if someone in the carriage is wearing it.

Also, I think the “niche” versus the rest distinction is pretty grey in today’s world. Pricing can very enormously in both. Also, a more sensible distinction could be between genuinely independent perfumers and the rest. I imagine a number of people who choose to wear the likes of Frederic Malle, Le Labo and Tom Ford perfumes (and pay the premium prices for them) are unaware that they are actually owned by Estée Lauder. Google tells me Diptyque is owned by a private equity firm, and Maison Margiela fragrances by L’Oriel. So they too have big corporate money behind them. I’m contrast, the likes of Tauer, 4160Tuesdays etc are genuinely independent and niche. All of which just reinforces my view that you should wear what you enjoy (and can afford!)

SOTD Diptyque L’Ombre Dans L’Eau. Love this.

V interesting discussion! I too remember the days when it felt like everyone was wearing poison, Giorgio, & opium. I hated all of them. Actually that Fredrick Malle portrait of a lady reminds me of those big overpowering scents.
I've always been attracted to less popular perfumes & unfortunately also more expensive ones which isn't always good for my bank balance!
I've never tried the 4160Tuesday range so they're on my list.
I honestly don't care what anyone else wears (apart from dh!) & think we should all wear what makes us happy
For me perfume is vital & I wear it every single day & have done since I was 15.
As a teen I obsessed over trying to find a perfume like the 'cologne' small the Spanish exchange students all seemed to wear in the 80s. They all smelled so good!! But I never did find it & settled for 'O de Lancome' which I saved up for & it was my first perfume!

Oh, I think you can get that on amazon?
Oh my silly brain can't think of the name
It'll come to me

In my perfume collection I've got more 4160tuesdays and avon than any other houses

ChamberLink · 15/01/2023 13:17

Thank you so much @Chevyimpala67 ! I will try that - there was no amazon. Or Internet in rural 1980's Ireland. Just an annual influx of mostly v fragrant (to my perfume starved teen world) Spanish students!!

Cantonet · 15/01/2023 13:29

My Spanish exchange student wore Fa cologne. My only other memory of her was that she was a very pretty crook.
I couldn't stand her 😂
In the depths of flu here, so I'm not really wearing perfume. Just lavender Savon de Marseille.

I agree with @AprilLady. A lot of previously indie brands have been bought by the big corporations, from Jo Malone to Frederic Malle.

If you want to support smaller brands, then as well as 4160 Tuesdays and Tauer, other brands that are most definitely independent are:
Le Jardin Retrouvé ( arguably the first niche brand in 1975 and still family run), Manos Gerakinis, Karen Timson Fine Fragrance, Papillon Perfumery, Marina Barcenilla, Gallivant, Cochine, To The Fairest, Northburn, Wales Perfumery (run by a lovely woman called Louise), Ex Idolo, Sana Jardin, Prosody London, DSH perfumery, Aftelier, Bogue, Rogue, And Fragrance,
Sarah Baker, Sarah Ireland (love Crushed Velvet!), St Giles, Floral Street and lots more that I can’t think of right now.
