Coats - just curious

How's everyone managing this inbetween weather?

I have to use the Tube and walk a lot. I hate layers because the Tube is boiling. I freelance so when I go to meetings I often don't know if it will be a hot place or a cold place.

yesterday I wore my warmest winter coat because I knew I'd have a 15 min walk home at 10pm. I have that, and a lined raincoat.

just wondered how others manage. I'm going to try to get a third inbetween coat!

tomorrow I think it will be warm in the day, the Tube will be boiling as usual but by the time I get to the walk home, it will be cold. Grr.

I have So. Many. Coats. Embarrassing really. I’m in a boiled wool, not too thick, long cardigany thing at the moment.

I can see why! it's like needing different ones for different points in the day! Maybe I should get a wool coat.

also, while I'm whinging, I got to a point where I managed to carry a small bag, so while I could roll up a gilet or something, it means back to the bigger bag, which I was hoping to avoid unless I have to take the laptop.

I always think clothes must be so much easier if you can drive or cab everywhere!

I'm in London too and often leave early and by lunch time it's much warmer... Anyway, I have a lot of different coats and jackets! I've been wearing this in recent days: www.otrium.co.uk/product/juniper-colourblock-mac-navy-multi

I also find it helps if I wear a coat buttoned up/belted with a scarf in the morning and then open later in the day so it feels less hot.

EmmaH2022 · 29/09/2022 21:39

fernz that's lovely! Probably the same warmth level as my raincoat - it's Protected Species one I got when MN had the 50% off over.

i've not heard of this website...I may be some time 😂

I have so many coats too. I tend to go for a thinner windproof rather than thick and warm in this in between weather as it's often the wind that makes you cold. Currently I'm wearing a seasalt short coat.

I always carry a pashmina in my bag - covers those times when the meeting room/office is cold or I need a bit extra for a late night journey home.

I commute about an hour into London, so it's freezing when I leave home and boiling on the tube - no solution really except carrying your coat etc.

Leakingroofagain · 29/09/2022 21:47

I have the same issue. I went in today and went just in a cardi but had my pashmina in my bag in case it was freezing on the walk home. I'm tempted to get a scarf with buttons/poncho type thing

ChezFelix · 29/09/2022 21:50

I am wearing my wool coat. Just warm enough. I wear it open a lot atm as I don't get too hot that way

TheOGCCL · 29/09/2022 21:51

I sometimes wear a jacket to go to/from work and then wear it just over my shoulders if it warms up. I find it really makes a difference to have your arms out and not quite be wearing the jacket. Works with oversized blazers or Barbour style but I'm sure loads of others

HundredMilesAnHour · 29/09/2022 22:44

I'm wearing this wool oversized blazer/coat (actually designed by my fabulous friend!) from a few years ago (pre-Covid). It's a favourite of mine so I'm delighted that it's cold enough to get it out again.

Sewwhat I'm such a scatterbrain. From your comment, I've just remembered, I normally wear a windproof coat at this time of year, but sadly it win't zip up now! I remember thinking in the spring, I can't face buying a bigger one but was hoping to slim back into it 😳 It's at mum's.

so, I will look for wool or windproof ...though the Otrium website has this

www.otrium.co.uk/product/karla-velvet-coat-mid-teal

which I really like, but described as velvet, listed as mostly cotton , it's hard to tell how warm it will be.

I love coats and jackets, I have way too many!

OP you definitely need another coat <enabling> 😂 I have -

A couple of tailored wool coats - one very smart, the other a bit more casual
A faux fur black short coat with a hood (Zara) - very warm
Dark green velvet puffer (Whistles) - also very warm
Light grey wool short coat (Gant) - in between coat
Black waterproof raincoat
Black leather biker jacket
Tan suede jacket (Hobbs)

Velvet isn’t warm at all. Maybe ok for this time of year but no good in winter.

PickAChew · 29/09/2022 23:41

I live in the NE and have a summer weight waterproof, a lightweight quilted (doesn't get much wear) a good but not particularly well insulated water and windproof coat that does most winter days and another one that is a bit old and scruffy that only comes out in serious winter weather.

I add layers to any of them for a bit more warmth.

I saw someone wearing that coat in a shop the other day. It looked fantastic and so did she. I wonder if it was you 😂

EmmaH2022 · 29/09/2022 23:44

Minny it's for this sort of weather...I've got the predictable padded coat for deepest bit of winter.

PickAChew · 29/09/2022 23:45

I'm also in the process of making a pure wool coat. It will be warm and shower proof and totally impractical for all but 10 days a year, but hopefully last forever!

LadyAstor · 30/09/2022 06:08

Its tricky.

This is why you need a range of coats.

For work (office)/smart occasions, I wear:

  • long camel wool wrap coat
  • beige car coat
  • grey car coat
  • black princess cut coat
  • navy knee length trench
  • longline relaxed fit grey/navy/beige blazer
  • longline cardigan

For casual:

  • long navy puffer
  • long black puffer
  • long beige puffer
  • short navy puffer
  • longline cardigan
  • long black wool wrap coat
  • short waterproof coats with hood in black, navy, red
itsnotdeep · 30/09/2022 06:18

I'm in blazers at the moment. Or a Rains raincoat if it's raining. Haven't got my wool coats out yet.

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 30/09/2022 06:23

I try and be fairly minimal with my wardrobe, but I’ve at least 7 coats. They all get used.

I’m a bit obsessed with fur (fake) coats, actually I’m obsessed with coats in general. I have to really restrain myself, luckily I love second hard or I’d be skint.

MichaelAndEagle · 30/09/2022 06:27

I have to take my coat off on public transport, otherwise I just boil.

Wheredoestheblackfluffcomefrom · 30/09/2022 06:29

Got London at the moment I’m wearing a heavy Macintosh style jacket from Jack Willis but looking for a long winter coat

MeanderingGently · 30/09/2022 06:44

Coats? It isn't coat weather yet, I'm not yet wearing one. For those saying "it's freezing," I'm not aware that most of the UK (bar Scotland) has had temps down to 0 degrees or lower yet, overnights have been anything from 4 - 9 or higher degrees. That isn't freezing.

I have one coat, I put it on when it gets really cold in winter. At the moment I'm still going to work in uniform, which includes a short-sleeved tunic, nothing over the top. If I had a longer commute including outdoors, I'd probably slip a cardigan on top until it got really cold.

I sometimes wonder whether people really know what 'cold' is and whether this contributes to the high energy bills (using too much energy by heating indoor spaces far too much).

alrightfella · 30/09/2022 07:00

Coats are the bane of my life. I own so many but always seem to be wearing the wrong one.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 30/09/2022 07:12

I leave home early, and then wait for a bus, then a train, then another bus (fun!) so I'm outside a fair bit, yesterday and today I've worn a dress with a leather jacket and scarf over it. It was 5° at the bus stop yesterday at 6.30 am. No scarf on the way home. I'm comfortable in this, and don't feel the need for a full on coat. I don't leave the office during the day, so if it's warmed up in the middle of the day, I have no idea 😂

EmmaH2022 · 30/09/2022 09:02

LadyAstor I agree. When my coats all fitted, I had about 7, I think.

Batshit just a leather jacket in 5, you are made of strong stuff!

My weight is affecting me in many ways so I am slowly losing it, I definitely don't want seven coats that only do another winter.

happily, I didn't chuck out a lot of stuff that a declutterer might have done. So this morning, I have found a long lined jacket with a hood, but thicker than my raincoat. It's tight when done up, but will be better than the raincoat I think. Tbh I didn't get much wear out of it before, but hopefully I will now!

no wonder you see many folks with their big puffa coats now - they're probably finding it easier and most affordable to just take that and carry it around.
