Coats - just curious

How's everyone managing this inbetween weather?

I have to use the Tube and walk a lot. I hate layers because the Tube is boiling. I freelance so when I go to meetings I often don't know if it will be a hot place or a cold place.

yesterday I wore my warmest winter coat because I knew I'd have a 15 min walk home at 10pm. I have that, and a lined raincoat.

just wondered how others manage. I'm going to try to get a third inbetween coat!

tomorrow I think it will be warm in the day, the Tube will be boiling as usual but by the time I get to the walk home, it will be cold. Grr.

I'm going to the Joseph sample sale later this morning. First thing I'm heading for is coats! And then jumpers (I love Joseph jumpers). They showed a beautiful camel cashmere coat with a tie waist on Instagram (reduced by 70%) but I suspect it will either be gone already or be a tiny size.

MintJulia · 30/09/2022 09:27

Classic gaberdine trench for these Misty days.

When it gets really cold I have the choice of a long slim pure wool coat or a shooting jacket designed for Scottish mountainsides. Or a ski jacket.

Coats? It isn't coat weather yet, I'm not yet wearing one. For those saying "it's freezing," I'm not aware that most of the UK (bar Scotland) has had temps down to 0 degrees or lower yet, overnights have been anything from 4 - 9 or higher degrees. That isn't freezing.

I have one coat, I put it on when it gets really cold in winter. At the moment I'm still going to work in uniform, which includes a short-sleeved tunic, nothing over the top. If I had a longer commute including outdoors, I'd probably slip a cardigan on top until it got really cold.

I sometimes wonder whether people really know what 'cold' is and whether this contributes to the high energy bills (using too much energy by heating indoor spaces far too much).

@MeanderingGently
You know most people say ‘it’s freezing’ to mean ‘it’s cold’ not ‘it’s literally the freezing point of water’…..?! 😂

And the energy crisis is not caused by people heating their homes….. Blame Putin and other factors for that!

It is quite cold in some parts of the UK already and I’ve been wearing a coat out in the evenings. Like PPs I have several coats and jackets @EmmaH2022. For mild rainy weather, colder rainy weather, mild dry weather and cold dry weather. Add in a couple of variations for smart/casual. Sounds like you have a gap on your wardrobe! For in between weather I have a lovely Mackintosh trench coat, which is warm enough over a jumper for autumn, and a short puffer with a hood for when I’m walking the dog etc. I also have a couple of warmer blazer type jackets but to be honest it’s too cold for those now for me - I’m in Scotland though, they got more wear when I was in London.

AmongstTheCosmos · 30/09/2022 09:54

I've been wearing a gilet on the school run which provides just the right level of warmth. Not very chic though!

I also find coats really difficult! You need so many different types!

HilarityEnsues · 30/09/2022 10:01

@MeanderingGently isn't it more likely you don't really feel the cold! I mean it's not t-shirt weather IMO! I noticed yesterday some people were in winter style clothing, and one lady was in a summer dress with flip flops it was all very bizarre. I wore an autumn outfit, so no thermal vest, no wool coat, but definitely thin tights, a nice long-sleeved dress and a gilet, with boots not sandals.

OP, I don't think you can get around the fact that when you run for the Tube you get hot and then the Tube itself is boiling, just take your coat off. I don't think there's a way around this, having done it for a decade and a half.

chesirecat99 · 30/09/2022 10:29

They aren't that beautiful but the windproof/waterproof Uniqlo blocktech jackets fold up so they are tiny, and they aren't expensive. They are handy for keeping in a bag.

TheSausageKingofChicago · 30/09/2022 10:31

My coatigan gets plenty of wear this time of year

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 30/09/2022 10:35

I've just bought a faux sheepskin jacket from M&S that I'm loving for this weather. It's warm enough that I can wear light tops underneath it but there's also room for jumpers once it gets really cold.

I also have a UNIQLO that I wear on dog walks or layer under my raincoat for when it's both cold and wet.

Penguinsaregreat · 30/09/2022 10:39

I’ve bought a new coat. It’s a dark green French connection one. Waterproof with a hood. Not a puffer, not long, inbetween I’d say. I wanted an alternative to my long, big puffer style and my short hoodless puffer. I also have a few woollen types. Then I have a leather jacket and a thin rain type coat but that’s more of a summer/spring.
I also have a long cardigan coat but that’s not waterproof.
Dh bought me a shawl type thing but I’m not sure how to wear it.

LouisaMayAlcott · 30/09/2022 10:56

I have many many coats. Including the White Stuff velvet one mentioned. It's just right for this current weather, feels like a coat but definitely won't be good enough for proper winter. Or even pre-proper winter. But autumn is fine. Maybe not late autumn though! As you can tell by inventing seasons sub sections I can justify more coats 😂

HundredMilesAnHour · 30/09/2022 18:38

So back from the Joseph sample sale today and I came home with this coat for £280:

www.mytheresa.com/en-gb/joseph-cashmere-blend-puffer-coat-2025907.html?utm_source=sea_pla&utm_medium=google&utm_campaign=google_sea&ef_id=CjwKCAjwp9qZBhBkEiwAsYFsb5JtgHmAy3h41AE3_c2boQFghfG1Xn9PdUMTPZUVDijbdYmdM6z5shoC6IgQAvD_BwE:G:s&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=CjwKCAjwp9qZBhBkEiwAsYFsb5JtgHmAy3h41AE3_c2boQFghfG1Xn9PdUMTPZUVDijbdYmdM6z5shoC6IgQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&slink=1

Clearly not suitable for current weather (unless I want to melt) but I remain hopeful for a very cold winter.

It just felt so lovely and warm and cosy, and I'm a sucker for a coat. In my defence, I'm going to Iceland in November. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. 😜

Pigtailsandall · 30/09/2022 19:24

I love coats and jackets too. I think they're my favourite thing to buy. I've just brought put my two trench coats but not yet worn them. Today I wore a wool jumper and a leather jacket over it; yesterday I wore a long wool coatigan over a long-sleeve t-shirt. It's getting too cold for my denim jacket and the thinner blazers (as outerwear) buf I'm not yet ready for heavy wool coats.

EmmaH2022 · 30/09/2022 19:55

Well, at one point today, I was so cold...and it began raining as I walked from one meeting to another.

I wear a cross body bag and didn't take my massive umbrella because weather said "showers" not "heavy rain".

so I ended up putting bag and brolly on the pavement to undo the muddle of bag strap, and get my coat zipped and hood up.

sadly I can't leave London and public transport but for now, very warm coat it is.

it was not remotely whatever temp was forecast for today either.

OP posts:
EmmaH2022 · 30/09/2022 19:56

*tiny brolly, I did have with me.

I walk for 20 mins each way, at 8am and 6pm. Then I sit at a desk in a room where I’m not allowed to have the heating on until November. It’s cold now, and also poured with rain all day today. In a short-sleeved tunic, even topped with a cardigan, I would have be shivering by the time I arrived at work, and would not have warmed up all day.

faretheewell · 30/09/2022 20:20

At the moment the coat is a Mac, leather jacket or denim jacket with either a long sleeve / 3/4 length sleeve top underneath. If it gets colder I'll start with the jumpers underneath. Proper cold weather the long puffer and wool coats come out.

EmmaH2022 · 30/09/2022 20:23

I deliberately ignored the "not relevant" post. this is S&B!

Hundreds that's nice, bet it's very snuggly too.

@HundredMilesAnHour I love making excuses to buy stuff 😉 But I feel like the coat, gorgeous as it is, is not ideal for the amount of rain you get in Iceland! You’ll definitely want something waterproof. Unless this coat is waterproof in which case you’ve found the holy grail of stylish, waterproof and warm!

It's water-resistant. Trust me, I have no intentions of being outside long enough to need something waterproof (although I have plenty of waterproof coats as I grew up somewhere extremely wet!). 😜

Vinylloving · 30/09/2022 20:43

I have the protected species winter raincoat, it has a thin fleece lining and I find it light enough to not feel too hot but warm enough if it gets chilly

BatshitCrazyWoman · 01/10/2022 09:00

EmmaH2022 · 30/09/2022 09:02

LadyAstor I agree. When my coats all fitted, I had about 7, I think.

Batshit just a leather jacket in 5, you are made of strong stuff!

My weight is affecting me in many ways so I am slowly losing it, I definitely don't want seven coats that only do another winter.

happily, I didn't chuck out a lot of stuff that a declutterer might have done. So this morning, I have found a long lined jacket with a hood, but thicker than my raincoat. It's tight when done up, but will be better than the raincoat I think. Tbh I didn't get much wear out of it before, but hopefully I will now!

no wonder you see many folks with their big puffa coats now - they're probably finding it easier and most affordable to just take that and carry it around.

I probably don't feel the cold quite as much as others (overactive thyroid) and on the whole prefer to be too cool rather than too warm. There's no getting round the inferno that is the tube, though 😂 I try to avoid it, but obviously as a Londoner I do end up sweating on a packed tube quite often!

And yes, we need a range of coats, not just for the weather, but to suit what the cost is going over!

I was wearing a long sleeved dress, tights and boots with the leather jacket over., on the 5° morning. And a light scarf. My hands were cold though, I could have done with gloves!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 01/10/2022 09:01

*coat

MichaelAndEagle · 02/10/2022 10:07

Does anyone else have the problem of, so many lighter coats (i.e. trench) don't have hoods?
In light rain, or even fine mist I want to cover my hair or its frizz central.

LadyAstor · 02/10/2022 10:10

@HundredMilesAnHour that's a gorgeous coat.

Agree about the tube being boiling. It was unbearable in July and August. If someone could capture all that heat, they'd solve the energy crisis!
