I need an outfit for Friday!

DH and I have been invited to a 40th on Friday. I've known for ages and kept kicking it down the road - life has been crazy recently. Now I'm panicking as I literally have nothing to wear.

I'm a 'skinny jeans and nice floaty top' kind of a gal.
I could do that again at a push but I'd rather dress up a little - although I definitely don't want anything 'dressy'.

Dresses and jumpsuits can be a problem. I'm overweight (I squeeze myself into size 14 jeans) with my tummy as my main problem area. The wrong clothes make me look 6 months pregnant!

I am definitely going to lose weight (yeah right!) so I don't want to spend a lot. £100 or so.

Any ideas, fashionistas?

Your not. Have a look at peplum dresses on boohoo

limitededitionbarbie · 26/09/2022 20:28

I have nothing to do. Tell me what you would like and I will look Wine

limitededitionbarbie · 26/09/2022 20:29

What size are you. What do you want to cover/accentuate?

wishing3 · 26/09/2022 20:30

Could you go floaty dress and chunky boots?

She’s a size 14 and her tummy is her problem area <reads OP>

If you REALLY don’t wasn’t a dress then stick to what you’re comfy in and go for skinny jeans (maybe coated or leather look jegging? Mint velvet or M&S have some nice ones)

I was at a party at the weekend. Very stylish woman had on tapered black trousers, black vest/camisole and an oversized beige blazer. Low black heels, subtle gold jewellery.

I was wearing a midi dress and felt that my look was so dated and boring.

Here’s some ideas, everything from New Look:

Trousers
Cami
Blazer
Heels
Belt
Jewellery

TinyKittenPaw · 26/09/2022 21:02

Support pants or spanks to start with then consider wide leg jumpsuit- can look good but not over the top effort. Can be very flattering.

SingingWaffleDoggy · 26/09/2022 21:03

I second the Dove dress above. Or the Cayenne. In fact, the Dancing Leopard dresses are all very flattering with a great choice of prints. As it’s a bit short notice maybe order a few and keep the one you like most.
I’m an apple shape and keep being asked if I’m pregnant when in my other clothes 😳but feel comfortable in these

That’s gorgeous! And I may be projecting here but as a tubby size 14 apple I couldn’t wear that cami without a decent scaffolding bra - probably fine with the blazer tho!

Love that, think I saw it on Silk Fred?? But my waist is too big for a belt right now ☹️

I also feel dresses with waists are not for me (apple shape, even more appley during menopause), so I think the slim black trousers, cami and blazer is a real shout. I wear this a lot, although usually with slim jeans in the daytime, but black cami and casual blazer in the day, more structured one at night is what I live in! Plus nice shoes, I still wear heels but shorter these days, no tottering for sure. Gold delicate jewelry. I love this look!

HilarityEnsues · 26/09/2022 21:26

You can paint your toes and add more jewellery in the evening, plus an extra layer of make-up if that's your thing as well. I often wear the same thing in the day and evening and just change the shoes and sparkly stuff and add a bit of perfume.

You sound like me. I do tend to stick to what I know and like - I just up the ante with a heel and make up.

I agree the trouser/cami/blazer look is the one to go for. I might try a bright colour????

Thanks to everyone's input. I used to know this stuff!! I was never supposed to turn into the middle aged mum who knows nothing about style! But here I am 😂

If only I was that stylish. Totally just copying someone at the party! 🤣

It’s also insanely long so OP needs to be tall

There's a gorgeous green blazer in h&m at the moment.
