I need an outfit for Friday!

DH and I have been invited to a 40th on Friday. I've known for ages and kept kicking it down the road - life has been crazy recently. Now I'm panicking as I literally have nothing to wear.

I'm a 'skinny jeans and nice floaty top' kind of a gal.
I could do that again at a push but I'd rather dress up a little - although I definitely don't want anything 'dressy'.

Dresses and jumpsuits can be a problem. I'm overweight (I squeeze myself into size 14 jeans) with my tummy as my main problem area. The wrong clothes make me look 6 months pregnant!

I am definitely going to lose weight (yeah right!) so I don't want to spend a lot. £100 or so.

Any ideas, fashionistas?

@princessbear80
I would also like you to be my personal stylist please!
Size 10-12, short, going to a graduation in November 😂
Just kidding, maybe I'll start my own thread.

I was at a party at the weekend. Very stylish woman had on tapered black trousers, black vest/camisole and an oversized beige blazer. Low black heels, subtle gold jewellery.

I was wearing a midi dress and felt that my look was so dated and boring.

Here’s some ideas, everything from New Look:

Trousers
Cami
Blazer
Heels
Belt
Jewellery

It's all subjective though. Apart from the low black heels there's nothing in what the woman you described as stylish was wearing appeals to me at all. I bet I'd much prefer your dress.

So far as OP, not a clue- there's not enough information.

Whataretheodds · 27/09/2022 11:58

I agree tapered trousers, blazer and cami is the look.

To avoid attention round your waist, have the cami and trousers in the same/similar colour, and the blazer more of a contrast. It will draw the eye up and down.

Winederlust · 27/09/2022 12:02

Whilst I like the trouser/cami/blazer look I'm struggling to see what's particularly special or out of the ordinary about it (looks a bit 'just come from work' if anything).
I think the faux leather trousers with a bright oversized shirt, either satin or silk so it flows and sits nicely rather than looking too bulky. Classic but modern with a bit of an edge.

So I went for something slightly different than planned. I think someone upthread mentioned this type of thing:

I bought a hot pink satin blouse with diamanté buttons from Next - it was really inexpensive and felt quite good quality - with coated black jeans and hot pink heels. I curled my hair and went a bit low-key 70s glam!

I spanxed up to control the tummy (I MUST do something about that!!) and felt nice.

Thanks all 😊

Love the sound of the Next blouse. I am having my 60th party soon, can you paste the link please?

Justkoko · 01/10/2022 10:24

The blazer look sounds something I have been searching for! Good shout pp!
All the blazers are massively oversized and being 5'3" on a good day I get drowned in some of these jackets.
Anyone seen any neater fitting, waisted and shorter blazers?

Matildahoney · 01/10/2022 10:28

@Justkoko I'm 5"2 so I feel your pain, New Look are pretty good for more fitted ones, also I have a few from Zara that are shorter and fitted
