Is this too dressy for work?

I do realise the dress also has a massive slit up the leg which makes it not very appropriate haha, but otherwise? I think I tend to overdress for work but wondered if a dress of this type would not be too much?

Yuk

cawfeee · 25/09/2022 23:27

I think if you normally put a lot of effort into what you wear, then you could probably get away with the dress, your colleagues are used to seeing you dressed that way. Anyone else would probably get a few side ways looks and asked what the occasion was.

Minimalme · 25/09/2022 23:37

I am a chronic under dresser and completely understand what this feels like!

I feel so unhappy in loafer shoes and floaty fabrics - it makes formal events so miserable for me as I feel so uncomfortable.

I think you should wear what you like and what makes you happy. Sod everyone else.

Stravaig · 25/09/2022 23:09

It's slit to the crotch and has a truly bizarre embroidered doily-napkin swathing the bodice, so it's hard to say what it would be appropriate for. Easy-access sex whilst breastfeeding/praying/eating spaghetti?

That made me laugh.

Cod · 26/09/2022 02:53

Oh this is so funny.

its bloody awful and no way right for anything. Definitely not work.

urbanbuddha · 26/09/2022 03:14

Cod!!! I have heard tell of ye in legend. I thought you had moved on to higher plains.

Agree it's no way a work dress. The OP obviously isn't angling for a promotion.

InsomniacVampire · 26/09/2022 05:40

@Adeleskirts I could take a guess that people who come and make unpleasant personal remarks (No, it's not suitable would be just fine) just because they can are most likely the ones who struggle with a lot of isses themselves, and this is the only way they can feel better. I hope today you will have a better day :)

A few people failed to read that bit I said I would obviously not wear a dress with a massive slit to work (or anywhere else for that matter), I am not that insane and I am not Angelina Jolie either.

I WOULD love the dress if it didn't have one and would totally wear it for an evening out at the very least. The person who said it would only be appropriate for some gala, I don't know, I am a sort of person who likes to put an effort when I go out too, so I would not wear jeans to a theatre for example. It does not bother me what other people wear, if someone wants to rock their trainers and shorts, then good, but for me it's a nice opportunity to wear something different, and so I do.

Workplace does not have a strict dress code, so some people come in suits and some in jeans and trainers.

@Explaintome Haha I saw a regular summer dress too, before I saw a slit. I actually saw it on ebay so the slit didnt show at all, it also didnt look that dressy with the lighting they took the photo on, only when I looked up the dress on the website.
Still love it minus the slit!

I would wear similar to work, particularly for external/customer meetings but I work in a formal industry.

It's beautiful

season2 · 26/09/2022 05:57

@Adeleskirts wow that's a nice comment (sarcasm).

I know several women in senior positions who will market themselves. Dressing in a particular style can be part of your own brand. I include myself is this category.

eleanorsmellstrop · 26/09/2022 06:09

This is such a weird thread. "Is this too dressy for work ... I know it is inappropriate I'm not wearing it anyway".

FurAndFeathers · 26/09/2022 06:20

Adeleskirts · 25/09/2022 20:22

Also the fact you need to ask suggests insecurity in itselF? Anyone secure wouldn’t need to seek validation.

Is it necessarily to try and tediously psychoanalyse folk on style and beauty for using the board exactly as it’s intended?

no, not everyone that posts on here asking for opinions on an outfit is insecure. They’re literally just using the board 🙄😂

unless you have actual professional psychology qualifications and someone is paying you to use them, maybe just stick to the question in the OP rather than starting a character assassination eh?

FurAndFeathers · 26/09/2022 06:28

I think the styling makes it look more formal. It’s not that dissimilar to many floaty maxi dresses and could very well be dresses down with a denim jacket and boots/flat sandals

WashableVelvet · 25/09/2022 21:37

It’s just the thing for the next all staff stand-up with the other Maenads and Dryads. Make sure you don’t trip over the hem when ululating on the mountainsides, though.

This is one of the only posts I’ve ever read on Mn that made me laugh out loud. I like imagining the OP ululating, maenad-like, over the photocopier.😀

mdh2020 · 26/09/2022 08:22

DS always went to the office looking as if she was going to a cocktail party. Everyone love her for style. Wear what you feel comfortable in.

iloveburmese3 · 26/09/2022 08:23

Definitely, definitely not. Not sure it's appropriate for anything other than a christening...

InsomniacVampire · 26/09/2022 11:13

@eleanorsmellstrop I will rephrase again, since so many people struggle with reading comprehension. "Would the style be appropriate if it wasn't for the slit."

I decided to get the dress after all (£10, not that bad), but for other outings, not work. I'll see how far the slit goes on me, either I'll sow or alter the top of it if it's too high, and style it with boots and jacket or something.

I do appreciate all answers! I guess because I don't really wear formal wear nor is it expected where I work I didn't expect the outrage it caused for some hehe. It's been ages since I had to wear a uniform or worked in a very "official" type of workplace.

Where on earth is that from for a tenner?

I work in a formal industry and I'd think you were bonkers if you turned up to a day time client meeting in that dress. It's overblown and tbh, quite hideous.

InThatCaseCanIHaveARaise · 26/09/2022 11:51

I’d wear it to work, and I work in an office. Everyone wears a uniform except me in the team that I work with.

deedledeedledum · 26/09/2022 14:25

Adeleskirts · 25/09/2022 19:55

Why do you over dress for work? If you’d consider this then yes it’s ridiculous. Is it an insecurity thing?

Pretty much the strangest comment I've read.

DillDanding · 26/09/2022 15:39

I can't think where you might wear that as it's truly horrible.

No, tell us what you truly think

Pinktoothbrushesarefab · 26/09/2022 15:59

@DillDanding I can't think where you might wear that as it's truly horrible.

Well, I think it's really classy for a posh garden party or summer wedding.

A good job we aren't all the same - eh? 🙂

monkeyupsidedown · 26/09/2022 16:06

It's a lot less dressy if you would pair it with a short green cardi, green leggings and brown boots.
