Is this too dressy for work?

I do realise the dress also has a massive slit up the leg which makes it not very appropriate haha, but otherwise? I think I tend to overdress for work but wondered if a dress of this type would not be too much?

If you like it wear it! If the split is too high I would see it personally to a more modest height. Life is too short to worry about what other people think. I love clothes and I don’t really do casual, I never wear jeans I just don’t like them I find them uncomfortable. I like vintage style clothing although I’m not completely into it like some people who have the whole look, I just like one or two vintage looking pieces. I’m retired now so don’t get opportunities to wear things so much so I’ll just wear a nice dress to sit at home lol usually something comfy though with a flared skirt.

I'm very like you but I do think that dress is OTT for normal office wear. Although our air conditioning broke down during the hottest part of the summer and OP could probably have worn it then- there were several people resorting to anything which would be cool.

Zedcarz · 25/09/2022 21:52

There's no context. Customer/ Fellow employees demographic? Industry type?
Its very flouncy and fussy, I wouldn't wear it but maybe back when I was young and fashionable and in a more exciting job than now, I'd have worn it...
In my twenties I dressed to show off , to my friends, my colleagues, to attract men, to signify what kind of person I am etc.in my thirties I started to learn more about what suited me and still had a gorgeous figure so dressed to enhance that.
In my forties I had kids, became unwell, gained huge weight so started dressing more for Comfort and to hide my body.
Now I'm learning to dress for My much altered body, lifestyle and to some extent , for my age.
I think when asking for advice on here, all factors should be considered in order for anyone to make a sensible comment.
Everyone who's commenting 'it's inappropriate ' has no idea what is appropriate for the op's workplace.

HairyMothballs · 25/09/2022 21:52

It looks like something to wear for a wedding.

blueshoes · 25/09/2022 21:54

That is not really office wear. I might look at you quizzically for a moment and then not give it a second thought. At least nothing is hanging out.

flingingmelon · 25/09/2022 21:54

Too much, gorgeous though

ASOS but it's quite bright in person.

No, that's not a work dress. That's a special occasion dress.

OxanaVorontsova · 25/09/2022 21:55

Yes far too dressy it’s a wedding outfit surely

J0y · 25/09/2022 21:56

It's a lovely dress! I'd wear it to my OWN wedding, so not to the office.

Have you seen the picture? It's an evening dress. Unless the OP is a casino croupier it's not a work dress.

She could wear it if she likes , it covers everything which needs to be covered, but she'd get some very funny looks.

Explaintome · 25/09/2022 21:59

I can't really see the slit in the picture. I'd wear that for work (assuming no slit) and I work in school!

It doesn't seem that dressy to me.

I too thought wedding. Too dressy for work.

zurala · 25/09/2022 22:03

I used to work on fashion magazines and we wore almost anything to work. But I wouldn't have worn that. Totally not work wear in any sense.

Explaintome · 25/09/2022 22:03

I'm honestly wondering if I'm seeing a different picture to the rest of you. It's a fairly ordinary summer dress to me. Our building is so overheated I don't really have winter work clothes. I'd wear that dress (without slit) with chunky boots for work and we're pretty casual.

Explaintome · 25/09/2022 22:05

OK, the slit doesn't work for work but the general style is fine IMO, although not with those sandals!

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 25/09/2022 22:06

i think a colleague would take you aside and ask you what you were thinking.

If you're in a secondary school the rumour would all round the school by morning break that Miss Explaintome has been on a dirty stop- out.

Egghead68 · 25/09/2022 22:07

I like it as an occasion dress but not for work

It's quite common where I work for people to dress down previous wedding outfits for work actually. The Head is always dressed up.

I promise no one would be taking anyone aside - that only happes for vest tops and flip flops 😆

ScurryfungeMaster · 25/09/2022 22:09

It's nice but it looks like a dress someone would wear to a wedding. I can't think of many workplaces that you wouldn't look completely out of place wearing a dress like that.

Goodness only knows where you teach. Yes, I get the idea of it being possible to rework some wedding outfits but that dress really isn't one of them.

In the getting on for 40 years I've worked in offices, all of which until lockdown had strict dress codes, I can think of only one person who reworked obvious wedding clothes- and she looked peculiar and even she never reworked anything like that.

I wouldn't have done it in formal offices, in the days when I mostly wore a suit (although I did sometimes buy suits tondress up for weddings) but the rules have largely gone now and in school, a bit of creativity in dress is encouraged (or at least it is where I've worked).

There's creativity and then there's looking bonkers by wearing an evening dress / obvious wedding outfit as an everyday dress.

It's not even creative - it's a cheap special occasion dress worn at the wrong time. There's far more to creative dressing than that.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/09/2022 22:35

Depends what you do, in lots of creative industries people wear whatever so it would be fine.

Stravaig · 25/09/2022 23:09

It's slit to the crotch and has a truly bizarre embroidered doily-napkin swathing the bodice, so it's hard to say what it would be appropriate for. Easy-access sex whilst breastfeeding/praying/eating spaghetti?

quietnightmare · 25/09/2022 23:11

I would but I wear whatever whenever, I won't keep things for special events otherwise you wear it once and wish I had worn it more. I don't see why not with a pair of tights cause of that slit but you already know that
