Is this too dressy for work?

I do realise the dress also has a massive slit up the leg which makes it not very appropriate haha, but otherwise? I think I tend to overdress for work but wondered if a dress of this type would not be too much?

Just before you order it it's actually a bright orange colour and not muted, I've just sent it back to ASOS. It's lovely but not a work dress to me I think it's the material, a similar style in a heavier material may be more worky (sans slot obviously)

Well slit aside obviously! I may wer it to theatre or something then 😂

It's too dressy even for most theatres unless it were a gala performance.
You could wear it to something like The Royal Ballet or The Royal Opera at Covent Garden, or even a regional ballet company, which attract a more dressed up audience than the theatre.

Mostmarriedcouple · 25/09/2022 20:44

Looks like a wedding guest dress. I wouldn’t wear this to work unless you work in a fashion type environment

DarkShade · 25/09/2022 20:45

I love it, where is it from?

ASOS but it's quite bright in person.

I overdress too. I just like wearing nice and interesting things rather than the usual black trousers or even jeans these days. Nothing to do with overcompensating for anything.
You do you OP and strut your stuff with pride and joie de vivre!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 25/09/2022 20:53

Don't worry.
Have you seen some of the things that King Charles III wears for his work? 😱

Tedsmum2017 · 25/09/2022 20:58

I’ve saw more inappropriate clothing than the OP in a workplace. You do you!

user1471548941 · 25/09/2022 21:02

Oh god, are you me?!

That is a beautiful dress. I LOVE overdressing for work but even I wouldn’t wear that to my Canary Wharf job… sorry, I understand why you’d want to though!

inheritanceshiteagain · 25/09/2022 21:08

Do you really need to ask?

SmileyClare · 25/09/2022 21:09

I think the term “overdressing” is open to interpretation. It’s one thing to have an individual style and love bright prints or whatever but another thing entirely to wear clothes that are too revealing or simply impractical for your work.

Wouldn’t that dress be a) too cold and b) likely to get all caught in the wheels of your office chair? 😂

GrimmTales · 25/09/2022 21:16

I work from home now, but when I did work in the office, that would have been fine to wear. It probably might have been assumed you were going out after work, though.

667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 25/09/2022 21:18

If you like it wear it! If the split is too high I would see it personally to a more modest height. Life is too short to worry about what other people think. I love clothes and I don’t really do casual, I never wear jeans I just don’t like them I find them uncomfortable. I like vintage style clothing although I’m not completely into it like some people who have the whole look, I just like one or two vintage looking pieces. I’m retired now so don’t get opportunities to wear things so much so I’ll just wear a nice dress to sit at home lol usually something comfy though with a flared skirt.

Donotgogentle · 25/09/2022 21:20

If you work as a princess, then it would be perfect 😁

Underthehills · 25/09/2022 21:26

If it doesn’t matter in your office, wear it and feel fab. I am a woman in a very male professional man’s world. I love wearing feminine dresses as it reminds me of who I am. I would absolutely have worn this a few years ago. I’ve always found that as long as you’re good at what you do, nobody cares what you wear and for me it’s always worked better than masculine suits. You do you.

Underthehills · 25/09/2022 21:28

Can’t lie though, I would NOT wear it with the slit 😂 That really would be too much.

Caroffee · 25/09/2022 21:28

I can't help thinking that threads about appropriate clothing choices are always done in jest.

WashableVelvet · 25/09/2022 21:37

It’s just the thing for the next all staff stand-up with the other Maenads and Dryads. Make sure you don’t trip over the hem when ululating on the mountainsides, though.

Is that Buffy?

LiftyLift · 25/09/2022 21:39

What shoes would you wear with it to the office? Trainers to dress it down or go all out and wear heels? Would you have a coat to match if it was cold?

Im trying to picture you wearing that by the photocopier.

Jelly89 · 25/09/2022 21:39

How judgemental. OP can overdress if they like without it being deemed some kind of problem.

Well, she did ask for opinions?

WonderingWanda · 25/09/2022 21:42

It's really very summery, I wouldn't wear it anywhere at this time of year. It is a lovely dress but I wouldn't wear it to work. I think it would be nice to wear at a wedding, garden party, bbq. Maybe summer a night out.

FabulouslyFab · 25/09/2022 21:44

Not my style but I also love to ‘dress’ up if I have to go to the office. I’m one of the lowest paid there but I like to dress as if I’m wealthy 😂😂
Frocks with trainers through the summer but tomorrow it’ll be a summer dress with dark tights and ankle boots!
