If you wear midi dresses & skirts, what non-frumpy jacket or coat will you wear this A/W?

Trousers don’t suit me & I love midi dresses and skirts, planning on pairing them with DMs & chunky cardigans.

But the length makes coats tricky now the weather is turning. I don’t want to look frumpy. I have a leather jacket but its not very warm and won’t work in winter.

Any ideas please?

Don't know, I have the same problem!!

happyinherts · 17/09/2022 21:43

Just going to try and make do with a Primark hoodie in suitable colour to dress - and hope that gets me through autumn. I'll probably revert to my cord leggings after that.

Terriblethirtytwos · 17/09/2022 21:45

I would love to know the answer to this! I wear Uniqlo heat tech tops under my clothes to keep warmer and manage in a jacket, but then when it gets properly cold I go full frump.

MichaelAndEagle · 17/09/2022 21:49

Google image search always brings up images like these. Which only looks ok when the coat is undone.

Thank you! The second one is nice.. I don’t really like long boots with skirts though, feels a bit mid noughties. They both seem quite formal
/office wear to me? Not very school-run friendly.

I am usually wearing mine for work and commute which includes a walk and a wait for public transport, so I don't mind formal.

Jemimapuddleduk · 17/09/2022 22:35

I have a full length teddy coat which looks amazing with midi/maxi and a mid thigh length parka style denim black jacket. I am also stuck with what to wear on cold and rainy days (ie most days on school run in north west from September- April!!)

partypingal · 17/09/2022 22:37

I have long wool coats like the second pic but also an ankle length quilted jacket with a round collar. It totally covers the dress so I think it doesn't detract from the overall look.

MichaelAndEagle · 17/09/2022 23:09

I think that's key. The coat either needs to be as long as the skirt, or waist length.
Thigh length just seems to look wrong to me, at least it does when done up, which it needs to be in the winter!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 17/09/2022 23:37

I tend to go to short-ish skirts in winter, but for now I am in an oversized H&M leather biker, and a long quilted &OS coat with midi length.

ramarama · 18/09/2022 07:56

Also three quarter leggings under midi skirts and a uniqlo lightweight thin long sleeved thermal top. This buys you an extra month or two of midi dress wearing in Autumn.
I've been known to substitute opaques with feet chopped off for the leggings in an emergency :-)

Verite1 · 18/09/2022 08:02

I do layers. So a Uniqlo heat tech top under dress, then a very light down jacket that I wear under my leather jacket. But if it’s really cold I will wear my mid thigh down jacket and don’t care that it doesn’t look the best. Or won’t be wearing a midi skirt at all!

Verite1 · 18/09/2022 08:03

am on the lookout for an ankle length down jacket this year though. Couldn’t find one I liked last year. Has to fit right or you look like the Michelin man!

MichaelAndEagle · 18/09/2022 09:08

I worry that sticking a thermal vest on will make me too hot in the office.

beguilingeyes · 18/09/2022 09:24

Last year I bought a navy blue fabric biker jacket style thing and I love it. I wore it over a dress going out for dinner on Friday night and it was perfect.

I have 2, a red bum covering red wool pea coat, and a mid thigh purple waterproof.

GreenyAnnie · 18/09/2022 12:54

This is also my perpetual problem. Like the long pea coat idea, but I am short..If the skirt is floaty, the slouchy coat on top just drown me in fabric. Tailored straight coat in a neutral colour like camel or black or navy, until mid calf maybe...with a down layer underneath?

UpToonGirl · 18/09/2022 13:06

I always think you either need a coat which falls below your knees, not necessarily longer than the dress but longer than thigh length, or it needs to be a shorter jacket, aviator/denim/suede or leather with a chunky scarf if needed.

3WildOnes · 18/09/2022 14:07

I wear a leather jacket but with a cashmere cardigan underneath for warmth and a cashmere scarf.

fernz · 18/09/2022 14:51

I've been looking recently too. I would love something that is more shaped around the waist but most coats at the moment are very straight shapes. I'm short and curvy so can easily look swamped by something like that if I'm wearing a dress/skirt as well.

HarryDan · 19/09/2022 11:14

Thanks for the replies. I do have a long teddy coat from Zara that works well. I like the Saint & Sofia one - maybe something like that as an inner lining for a biker jacket?

I wonder if Uniqlo has the answer - they have long down coats, a nice classic wool one and this which doesn’t look at formal as a traditional trench?

Was also thinking a full length, breathable skims/heatech layer would be great but guessing going to the loo would be tricky!

That looks a bit too short and wide to work with a midi. I think it needs to be the same length or slightly longer than the dress/skirt.
It's always really tricky. I have a trench which works as it's a bit floaty rather than a stiff structured one.
For going 'out out' a short faux fur would work.

GreenyAnnie · 19/09/2022 13:44

I think that has too much frump potential. Also wont work as the weather gets colder. How about this: shop.mango.com/gb/women/coats-coats/belt-handmade-coat_37045129.html?c=09
