Looking for a good tweed jacket

Possiblynotever · 15/09/2022 12:49

Just this really. I would like to buy a good tweed jacket that is not too stiff and that can help in mid season. My mum had one and I had one which felt apart ( after 20 years). It looked great on everything, especially with jeans and trainers. I would like it a little but fitted but would love to insert one of those light puffy jackets Uniqlo has to make it warmer ...
Boden used to have great tweed (I bought a great coat a few years ago) but I do not seem to find it anymore.
Happy to spend on it, but it must last 20 years :)

House of Bruar have some lovely tweed - I have my eye on a suit from them with this jacket: www.houseofbruar.com/l-twd-hacking-jkt-tr30135mdnghtbluehb/

Walker Slater for great quality www.walkerslater.com/women/jackets

Rydale have some if you are looking for a cheaper option. The quality is usually fairly good.

DressEmergency · 28/09/2022 22:14

I have an "Emma" - it's at least 10 year's old.

DoodlePug · 28/09/2022 23:34

May I ask how you style it? Beautiful jacket but not sure how I'd wear it.

Mum5net · 28/09/2022 23:38

Just go to eBay and search Boden Moon and Boden tweed. I’ve bought 3 in the last 12 months - so cosy

Was that to me? I wear dresses all the time- either 1950s style or what my husband calls my Shaker dresses or 40s style tea dresses? Tweed jackets go with all of them.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 28/09/2022 23:42

No idea why I added a random ? in that reply !

Possiblynotever · 29/09/2022 08:19

I find the Emma by Walker Slater truly beautiful, but I do not know how it would fit with trousers on me...also, I think it probably looks better buttoned up, so it is probably when the weather is truly cold. A
Boden was my first choice, but I have not found much in my size.

All the others are truly beautiful and not too pricey (considering that they last a lifetime)

Check out charity shops. I often since tweed. Would you consider a man's tweed jacket? If the oversize look might work.

ShangPie · 29/09/2022 09:15

— Very random tip, but just might work —

If you’re struggling to find one in-store, try looking at the poshest garden / country house event near you. I was at one in N Yorks last weekend and there were several large stands of outfitters with rails of jackets made from Harris Tweed, Moon fabrics, etc

otherwise Toast and Brora are a good bet

Floisme · 29/09/2022 09:48

I have several but most are from weigh n' pay sales or charity shops and finding one that way can be very random and takes time. I guess EBay / Vinted would be quicker but personally when I'm buying second hand, I like to see and feel it first.

If you want to find one quickly and you live anywhere near a naice market town my suggestion is to check out their country clothing stores, which often have them at much better quality than the high street and at surprisingly reasonable prices (although not cheap). Don't forget the riding section.

I also found one of mine - the only one I've paid full price for - in a large fair trade shop that sold Harris tweed.

MuddlerInLaw · 30/09/2022 09:54

Everything linked so far is much too neat and smooth and polite! (At least for me.) A tweed jacket should be a beast.

I agree you need a country clothing place, or a men’s outfitters - vintage definitely best. In the brief period when my life was perfection my very favourite item of clothing was a rough old Harris Tweed jacket passed on by a farming boyfriend.

<Thinks>

Amazingly this thread has reminded me of my favourite tweed jacket from a perfectly horrible time in my life, decades ago - really it was the only bright spot. Ralph Lauren, dark, dark green (what is that colour called, I forget?) wide lapels, a little puffing at the top of long narrow sleeves, nipped in waist. (Very Droopy & Browns.) I had to beg the shop assistant in Selfridges to hold it for me, and practically starved to buy it. Wore it literally to shreds but couldn’t bear to throw it away. I’ve just hunted it out, tried on what’s left of it and ironed it. It fits! And I know just the tailors for the resurrection project. It’s going to look magnificent when everyone else is in oversized blazers. And it will make sense of the dreadful, not waterproof at all boots I was too busy to return to Grenson at the start of the year.

I have a new outfit! Whoop!

Damn - my solipsism has killed the thread!

Your jacket sounds lovely

AllCreaturesEqual · 30/09/2022 11:50

Harris tweed. Buy direct from the western Isles.
Carloway mill is where I got mine.

Floisme · 30/09/2022 12:14

Did you buy a ready made jacket there AllCreatures, or just the fabric?

MuddlerInLaw · 30/09/2022 13:28

Excellent link, AllCreaturesEqual - I could probably do all my Christmas shopping there!

Jadoube · 30/09/2022 13:42

@MuddlerInLaw did you buy the RL jacket around 18 years ago? I had one in velvet in a very similar style I still adore!

ISeeTrees · 30/09/2022 14:04

I got mine from a charity shop too, it was an absolute bargain at £6 and it's a french connection one- checked their site and they're more like blazers now.
Equestrian shops often have lots of different styles and sizes, trying on is important to me and sounds like it is to you too!
