Can anyone share pictures of what mum boots are? 😬

I have some which are about 6 years old from M&S a bit like the bottom ones but suede.

Every year I am going to stop wearing them but every year I find myself reaching for them when I need to go somewhere smart for work and I can't face heels. They really do need to go (they are pretty worn out now) but comfort over style!

wiltingflower · 10/09/2022 09:20

Looking at these links, these are the types of boots I wear from New Look, Matalan, Asda etc 😱 but I thought they were still fashionable and really nice to wear at work, going out etc. Some of my boots have a much chunkier heel. Late 20s and not a Mum.

Practical heel, somewhat dated shape, some sort of feature like the eyelet in the second link above.

I think I'm guilty of my boots falling into mum boot category at the moment. Need to update for the Autumn. What are the current styles that would update our boot look?

Nothingbuttheglory · 10/09/2022 09:40

Mum boots are popular with mums because they're smart enough for work, comfy enough for all day, casual enough for the weekend and keep the rain out.

Not everything we wear has to be innovative and cutting edge. It is OK to wear stuff because it makes our lives easier.

All hail the mum boot!

OldKingCole · 10/09/2022 09:56

Oh no!!! They are what I wear :(
what about Cuban heel boots - such as the ones by Zadig - are they any way cooler?

Howmanysleepsnow · 10/09/2022 10:15

I have that very first pair🙈
I know I need to update, but no idea what to. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Agree.

I like the look.

@TheOGCCL all your linked boots are vile, and the price!!! I don't think the Jones pair are mum boots, they are lovely. Who cares anyway. Day to day life you need boots that are comfy and look good with all your wardrobe.

MistyRock · 10/09/2022 12:14

@pprocrastinator8 these are lovely.

Whatwaswrongwiththatusername · 10/09/2022 12:21

Now, these actually look really nice, and also a bit comfy and different from the block/Cuban heels. Only the price tag of 150 is just not as nice! If anyone know/has seen/owns a pair like this from somewhere else, at a bank account friendly price please do share! Thank you ☺️

FlippertyGibberts · 10/09/2022 12:23

Dad boots don't exist - men just get to wear boots.

weekfour · 10/09/2022 12:27

I like the Zadig ones. Anyone lend me £300? 😱

👍🏻
I also thought this and had screenshot a google images page of just "women's boots" and was going to post with similar - "mum boots are just all boots". Then I did get distracted with the ones I've just quoted above! 😂

Whatwaswrongwiththatusername · 10/09/2022 12:32

Also, while I'm technically still a mum, my "child" is mid/late 20s and I am a frequent wheelchair user so in theory can probably wear just about anything. I already have far too many pairs of boots, tbh, but on the plus side at least they last much longer than they used to! 😆

Bilingualspingual · 10/09/2022 12:41

Why does ‘mum’ have to be pejorative? I have no interest in wearing what a lot of young women wear right now but I think they look fine. I don’t think they’d all expect me - middle-aged - to want to dress like them. Wear your ‘mum’ boots with pride!

TheOGCCL · 10/09/2022 12:47

I think the concept of mum boots is changing in the same way that ageing is changing. If you look back at old film, women in their forties looked very old (partly due to what they are wearing).

The traditional mum boot is probably more a 'gran boot' these days but the essence remains: something that is practical, comfortable and not especially stylish. Anyone can wear what they want but this is Style and Beauty where many are interested in what people wear and current trends.

Nowadays we have the concept of yummy mummies, who wouldn't go for mum boots.

I think there are dad equivalents. You see men in their forties and beyond who are also going with comfort over style, quite ill fitting trousers and not particularly attractive shoes. I'm sure they don't care but that doesn't then make it stylish.

BrownOrangeRed · 10/09/2022 12:49

I wear that style of boot because they're comfortable, go with most outfits and most importantly, I like them. Why are they called mum boots and why does it even matter?

PileofLogs · 10/09/2022 12:53

All Zadig stuff is mum stuff, unfortunately. A sort of middle-aged person's version of what a young person might wear. (Not knocking it- I have some lovely stuff from Zadig but then I am a middled-aged person and a mum.)

MarmaRell78 · 10/09/2022 13:01

How are people criticising a boot being practical and comfortable?! Surely that's what you want for something you're wearing all day? Or have I missed the point...

To clarify... What boots are in? I've just bought a new pair in the sale and now I'm thinking I'm going to be horribly out of touch!
