Work night out - what to wear?

PeachMelba78 · 27/08/2022 18:50

I have a work night out on Friday, at a crazy golf place, 18+.
I have just joined the team, in one of the more senior positions.
From looking at the website of the crazy golf place it seems to be younger women pictured in crop tops, trainers, short shorts etc.
I’m 44 and a size 8. I was thinking about wearing white trainers, a pair of longer shorts (high waisted to hide my mum tum), and maybe a camisole and an oversized blazer?
I have a ton of clothes so I really don’t want/need to buy any more.

The team is generally more casual than I am, so I’m trying to fit in without dressing too young. I’ll try on a few outfits and upload them for your opinions - please be kind!

@Thestoppedfan on the website they had loads of (young, glam) women wearing shorts and trainers - maybe that’s why I am so set in a similar look so I blend in?

Proportion of shorts and jacket: I think the difference between your outfits and the blogger is that her shorts are baggier and jacket a bit more fitted and your are the other way around, it's a fairly subtle difference though.

You look great in your clothes but (kindly) the khaki outfit and the black shorts/white blazer outfits look like a weird uniform for cruise ship or golf club staff - quite dull. Both the pink outfits are fun.

PeachMelba78 · 28/08/2022 10:59

@MenaiMna that made me smile! I do think I often look quite ‘uniformed’ in a lot of what I wear.

Your black one fits slightly better.
I hope you don't think I'm rude it's just I have the same problem as you. I've tried on the blazers in my wardrobe with similar outfits but it doesn't look like how the more fashionable women look because my blazers fit like yours. I've put a lot of thought into it as you can tell Grin

PeachMelba78 · 28/08/2022 11:09

@theresaratinthekitchen no not rude, it’s interesting!
I will put on the outfit I wore with the white blazer last week and take a picture - it felt good at the time but I wonder if it was as good as I thought!
The black I have been wearing with paperbag waist trousers and a plain top. I think it works fine with trousers as there’s the length to balance it out.

Thank you @PeachMelba78 !

Really love that last look with the cream blazer. Think it looks very current and spot on for the activity/venue.

I do agree with you about denim jackets - the cut tends to be seasonal so if you have an old one, it can look dated.

If you were on the look out for something more fresh, get a bomber jacket.

PeachMelba78 · 28/08/2022 11:51

@WalkingOnSonshine I have never considered a bomber jacket - I will need to research them. I thought oversized/long blazers were on trend but maybe they’re not/the fit of mine isn’t right/both of the above.

I think the black one is great for fit and length but the white looks wrong with each combo so I think bits an issue with the jacket. And it’s a bit matchy with the trainers- looks a bit off.

if you’re low on confidence I’d go for a tried and tested outfit you’ve felt great in/had fun in and just don’t give it any further headspace or second guessing. It should be fun and if it’s not I’d boost your confidence elsewhere.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/08/2022 18:29

Love the khaki.

@EarringsandLipstick I wouldn’t wear a denim jacket, blazers are much more my style and around here that’s what people wear.
I do wear dresses but my dresses are either work wear or more evening wear - my casual dresses are too casual - beach wear or height of summer - I’m in Scotland where it’s not the height of summer, but I really like wearing shorts.
I also hate wearing jeans, I get hot flushes and I find having my legs out helps regulate my temperature. Plus I find jeans uncomfortable.
It’s interesting that people are saying that the look is unbalanced as I don’t think this look is - is it just because she has pushed her sleeves up?

She has heels on which for me gives balance and proportion with the high waisted shorts. And personally I do think the sleeves look better pushed up a bit.
Of your outfits OP I personally prefer the khaki jumpsuit- I'd wear it with heeled sandals but the trainers are fine. As others have said you have a cracking figure.

FT123456 · 28/08/2022 19:01

I'd go with the khaki playsuit

PeachMelba78 · 28/08/2022 22:13

Ok so Khaki it is and the white blazer is in the Vinted pile along with a whole host of skirts, trousers and dresses which are too small from a mammoth try on session tonight.
I tried on my wife’s oversized blazer and it looks much better than either of mine.
I’ve also contacted a personal stylist as I’m really struggling to find decent combinations of things so hopefully she will help, if not I will try John Lewis stylists.
I know objectively my figure is ok but I’ve totally lost my waist and I used to dress to highlight it so it’s hard to now dress ‘opposite’ iyswim?

@DillyDilly my bra is fine, the top is not!
@bare I would wear city shorts, a top and jacket to the office, but I will wfh that day.
This is my final choice, but probably going to wear the jumpsuit as it is the most flattering.
I agree that the blazer looks too long in the picture, but it looks ok in person.

I think I should clarify, the denim jacket would be mumsy on me I think.
And until I tweak the buttons on the polka dot then it will be mumsy too I guess.

These shorts are quite casual and so are the trainers so you should wear something casual on top like a tucked in T-shirt or oversized linen shirt. The problem with this outfit is that you're mixing styles too much- the top is quite formal and "worky". The white jacket isn't giving you the oversized blazer look you're after as it isn't oversized or slouchy enough so it looks more like a standard work blazer than a cool oversized blazer.

bravelittletiger · 28/08/2022 22:23

The first outfit you posted has the same problem- holiday relaxed shorts plus a dressy top and jacket and then your very casual trainers.

The green jumpsuit looks great on you. You can't go wrong with that and it shows off your great figure.

You seem to enjoy wearing trainers. I would invest in some new ones to be a bit more trendy- have a look at Veja or New Balance.
