Work night out - what to wear?

PeachMelba78 · 27/08/2022 18:50

I have a work night out on Friday, at a crazy golf place, 18+.
I have just joined the team, in one of the more senior positions.
From looking at the website of the crazy golf place it seems to be younger women pictured in crop tops, trainers, short shorts etc.
I’m 44 and a size 8. I was thinking about wearing white trainers, a pair of longer shorts (high waisted to hide my mum tum), and maybe a camisole and an oversized blazer?
I have a ton of clothes so I really don’t want/need to buy any more.

The team is generally more casual than I am, so I’m trying to fit in without dressing too young. I’ll try on a few outfits and upload them for your opinions - please be kind!

@girlmom21 its from Baukjen but I bought it from Vinted. It’s certainly a good fit which I think is an issue with a few of my clothes (period bloat and fluctuating weight)

I like one, it looks lovely on you and the proportions are better on that outfit

EarringsandLipstick · 28/08/2022 07:55

A denim jacket isn't dated!

Re the model, I was being a little disingenuous I guess - I did reckon she wasn't taller but she's very slim with a long silhouette (again slimmer & narrower of shape than I'd be, I'm also small in height / size 8). There's not really a point in comparing your look to hers as it's not really possible to replicate.

At the end of the day if you feel comfortable, that's all that matters. Have a great time!

Russell19 · 28/08/2022 08:00

You said to be kind yet you're being a bit personal about people's suggestions 😔

I get the look you are trying to do but your shorts are too casual for it. Do you have any other shorts that are plain/tailored?

Tanaqui · 28/08/2022 08:00

I like the khaki, the blazers look too formal with the shorts and for the activity to me (the bloggers whole look reads more formal to me, possibly the heels, but also the shorts look more tailored?). You look great though, so I would wear what you feel good in!

PeachMelba78 · 28/08/2022 08:03

@EarringsandLipstick a denim jacket is dated, believe me!
And I’m only 1 size bigger than her - but I have this larger section since menopause started across my lower belly which makes picking outfits hard. She’s younger than me and has no stomach to speak of - I used to look like that!
I’m not trying to look like her, but I will try the push up trick with the sleeves.

@Russell19 I don’t think saying that denim jackets are dated or that I don’t wear jeans is rude? Plus I feel very vulnerable at the moment, looks-wise.
I will try my more formal shorts, the black ones are formal style though? They feel more comfortable fit-wise too.

Honestly I feel quite dumpy at the moment in most things.

A denim jacket really isn't! You seem to have weird fashion rules. It of course depends on the style & how it's worn

I find it hard to comment at times on threads like these, and do here as I really would not like to be hurtful.

I'm sorry you're not happy with your shape; I think your shape is fine but the style of clothes isn't doing you any favours & I don't think it's working, fashion-wise at all.

I'd keep it much more simple. Yes to the formal shorts plus a simple t-shirt & statement earrings.

Your current outfits are drawing a lot of attention to your middle & the high waist is cutting you off meaning you're not getting a silhouette that flatters.

A dress would also be a great solution - how about a dress with a cropped jumper over it (if dress too summery.)

The long line jackets are not doing you any favours.

timeforthebeach · 28/08/2022 08:44

I like the khaki jumpsuit best, I think it's suitably smart and casual for the venue.
2nd choice would be the outfit with the dark blazer.
All outfits suit you but the others are a bit formal for mini golf in my opinion. I agree that the white tops are a bit 'booby'

DillyDilly · 28/08/2022 09:07

I think you’re not doing yourself justice with most of those outfits. You have a lovely figure and just need a well fitting bra. The polka dot outfit with white jacket is quite ‘mumsy’ as are the rest of the shorts outfits.

The kakhai play suit is the best option. I think you’re on the wrong path with shorts and maybe some sort of casual trousers/top would be more a crazy golf outfit.

DillyDilly · 28/08/2022 09:13

PS. Denim jackets are definitely not dated. I’m just looking at Sezane’s new drop this morning and they have several denim jackets. I guess it depends on the jacket style though.

bare · 28/08/2022 09:15

We don't tend to change for a work night out Confused I tend to just change into my trainers and wear whatever I was wearing to work. We did cricket nets in a bar recently and we just went as we were?
Or will you wear shorts for the day in the office?

PeachMelba78 · 28/08/2022 09:23

@DillyDilly my bra is fine, the top is not!
@bare I would wear city shorts, a top and jacket to the office, but I will wfh that day.
This is my final choice, but probably going to wear the jumpsuit as it is the most flattering.
I agree that the blazer looks too long in the picture, but it looks ok in person.

I think I should clarify, the denim jacket would be mumsy on me I think.
And until I tweak the buttons on the polka dot then it will be mumsy too I guess.

Work night out - what to wear?

Definitely playsuit

OhMaria2 · 28/08/2022 10:00

Link to blog please? I like her style

I thought the polka dots looked nice on you

Thestoppedfan · 28/08/2022 10:11

I like the polka dots or the black top and jacket and beige shorts. I’ve been to the golf thing I think you are talking about and all of the outfits you have posted would be fine there- it’s a good mix of casual and people that are dressed up for going out.

ClumsyPickle · 28/08/2022 10:15

I love the look and if I had your figure it's definitely something I'd wear! Just throwing something into the mix incase it's a consideration for you...a lot of these adults crazy golf places have UV/blacklights so anything white will glow ✨️

GiltEdges · 28/08/2022 10:16

I genuinely can’t work out what you wanted from this thread OP.

You say you’re sensitive right now, but are asking for the opinions of random people on the internet about how you look. Like a few others have said, I don’t think any of the outfits are at all flattering on you, but you do have a great figure.

But as you’ve made abundantly clear in response to the suggests of any poster who has a different opinion to your own, you aren’t interested in hearing anything other than “that looks great”. Sadly, it would be disingenuous of me to say that, because none of them do.

But ultimately, if you can’t handle a variety of opinions, just wear what you want. It doesn’t matter what I or anyone else on the internet thinks about it.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 28/08/2022 10:18

PeachMelba78 · 28/08/2022 07:00

@EarringsandLipstick I wouldn’t wear a denim jacket, blazers are much more my style and around here that’s what people wear.
I do wear dresses but my dresses are either work wear or more evening wear - my casual dresses are too casual - beach wear or height of summer - I’m in Scotland where it’s not the height of summer, but I really like wearing shorts.
I also hate wearing jeans, I get hot flushes and I find having my legs out helps regulate my temperature. Plus I find jeans uncomfortable.
It’s interesting that people are saying that the look is unbalanced as I don’t think this look is - is it just because she has pushed her sleeves up?

That look for some reason does look quite different and is much better balanced. Not sure why- possibly the rolled up sleeves/ less rigidily structured jacket/ jacket and shorts being same length or the really nice sandals? It looks pulled together in a coherent way.

theresaratinthekitchen · 28/08/2022 10:28

The look doesn't work as your jackets are a different shape/ cut. Yours are fitted on the shoulders and bust. Need a bigger size or different cut.

PeachMelba78 · 28/08/2022 10:41

@GiltEdges that’s an interesting perception. I don’t want people to say that I look great when I don’t, but equally I don’t want to wear jeans/dress/denim jacket.
I agree that the proportions of the jacket + shorts isn’t working, and I have adjusted the buttons of my polka dot play suit this morning to see if that will help for a different occasion.
The general consensus is that the khaki works so I will wear that.
I haven’t tried on these combinations in a while/at all so it’s good to get opinions and then look to see how I can wear them with other things.
Im sorry you don’t like any of the outfits, but that’s ok. My figure is weird, I’m still trying to understand the changes to my body and what combinations suit me. Handbags are much easier!

PeachMelba78 · 28/08/2022 10:42

@ClumsyPickle good point re the UV. I will wear the khaki and I don’t mind if my feet glow!

OP posts:
PeachMelba78 · 28/08/2022 10:44

@TheLassWiADelicateAir yes I agree, I will try a work style similar to that. I have some nude sandals and some nude pumps which could work, plus a pair of plan pale pinkish beige shorts. Although it’s getting cooler now.

PeachMelba78 · 28/08/2022 10:46

@OhMaria2 it’s Extra Petite, she’s in her 30s but dresses quite classic, I find her work/dressed up is lovely.

OP posts:
PeachMelba78 · 28/08/2022 10:47

@theresaratinthekitchen that could be it! Not planning on buying anymore jackets so I will need to try them on with some other things - I have worn them with various trousers and tank top style tops which seem to work.
