Weird how style change

I've been sorting through MiL's clothing as she has far too much and can only wear easy access stuff. I've found drawer after drawer of slips and camisoles. The odd thing is that she would be wearing them under clothes but now they are clothes. Some are seriously pretty too. One slip is like a damask , pale print with tulips .

Isn't it odd how quickly fashion changes. I'd guess these would be 80s at the earliest

It's funny because I've never worn them for warmth, just as a lining, to improve the look, stop clinging etc. I suppose you could get warmer ones as an extra layer.

I have a full brushed cotton slip from Jigsaw which definitely adds warmth.

I appreciate you wanting to look great and show your clothes to best effect.

I think we're coming from different ends- I've no desire to call you anything.

I'm frustrated by the expectation that women have work much harder than men to look tidy. As I mentioned earlier, DS never considers what colour his underwear should be.
People stressing about clothes not being cut to cover bra straps.
I really like clothes.

I object to the search for perfection, I think.
I also feel like I fail at the attention to detail 'womaning' requires. Back in the day when I wore a petticoat, the hem showed or it bunched up into a lumpy spare tyre around my waist.

But I think, @TheLassWiADelicateAir , we're both reading things into each other's posts that aren't intended.

I agree @picklemewalnuts - it's because men's clothing is more practical and serviceable. You don't see men with see through trousers or flimsy tops and jackets. Women's clothing is (often, still) sexualised and for the eye of the men looking rather than practicality.

But presumably your DS wears jeans/trousers? When I wear jeans I don’t worry about showing my underwear, so I wear whatever. When I wear a clingy transparent dress I do worry about whether my underwear will show. Nobody is saying you have to wear a dress and you have to wear a slip - just that if you wear see through or clingy clothes and don’t want people to see your naked body/underwear underneath, a slip is a good option. If my DH liked a nice sundress on a hot day I’d encourage him to think about whether his undies were on show too.

I also have a dislike of people (mainly men) wearing pants too big so their pants show over the top. I think underwear shouldn’t show.

And in honour of this thread I dug deep into a drawer and put on a pure silk slip under my summer dress last night. 16' and damp conditions but I was toasty. (And hopefully my dress hung better too)

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 26/08/2022 14:00

16 and damp conditions😖

Boiling hot here again😭

ImAvingOops · 26/08/2022 16:54

I've recently rediscovered slips - they make wearing shirred dresses and linen much more comfortable and stop dresses riding up.

faretheewell · 26/08/2022 21:42

Even men's jeans are thicker. My DH's white jeans don't show his coloured / black boxers through the material. Mine would and I have to wear white or nude underwear with them.

What sort of jeans are you buying? I’ve never had the issue of see through jeans! Maybe leggings.

picklemewalnuts · 26/08/2022 22:00

White jeans, absolutely need light underwear. As do all my light trousers.

They were 'mum' jeans from H & M. Pretty standard and absolutely fine with white or nude coloured underwear. But black would show through. Think my DH's are H & M too.

Oh I don’t wear white jeans or light trousers. I’ve never experienced proper jeans being see through to the extent of worrying about underwear though - maybe you need to try different places? Or spend a bit more of possible? I do have a couple pairs of cheap jeans though and none of them are transparent.
