Weird how style change

I've been sorting through MiL's clothing as she has far too much and can only wear easy access stuff. I've found drawer after drawer of slips and camisoles. The odd thing is that she would be wearing them under clothes but now they are clothes. Some are seriously pretty too. One slip is like a damask , pale print with tulips .

Isn't it odd how quickly fashion changes. I'd guess these would be 80s at the earliest

Also a fan of the M&S slip under a dress.

5128gap · 24/08/2022 10:12

In the 80s we wore a lot of full cotton skirts gathered at the waist. The famous picture of Lady Diana as she was then showed us the value of wearing a half slip under them!
The camis you describe, we would have worn as tops in the mid/late 80s with ripped jeans. I didn't know women wore them as underwear.

Seniorandjunior · 24/08/2022 10:21

Another fan of the M&S slips here, both full and half.

Like everybody says - clothes hang better, look more substantial/expensive somehow, reduce cling, and get rid of the see-through element. Try them!

How do people get rid of the see-through without them?
My favourite cami was this gorgeous silk cami I bought in ?Jenners (is that a departmetn store?) on a weekend away in Edinburgh. Wore it until it became threadbare and still miss it! It was so gorgeous to wear.

When it's warm enough to wear a sheer dress, it's too warm for a petticoat. So I simply flash. I could as easily be wearing cycling shorts and no skirt, or hot pants, or a swimming costume. Silhouetted legs can't be that alarming, given that other people display them unclad!

silentpool · 24/08/2022 11:57

I don't wear dresses much but they do hang better with a slip. I use my slips as nighties in summer - so nice 😄

I think it's just that some are uncomfortable with underwear being on display, especially at work.

Blingismything · 24/08/2022 12:15

We used to say 'Charlie's dead' if a petticoat/slip showed beneath a hemline. I am 54. Have a few for dresses.

RuthW · 24/08/2022 12:23

I'm 54 and only stopped wearing 'underskirts' in the early 90s. My mum still wears them.

cordiate · 24/08/2022 12:34

We said it was 'raining in Paris' when an underskirt showed.

picklemewalnuts · 24/08/2022 13:15

@Maireas definitely not at work, of course. I had to wear fairly robust clothing at work so it didn't occur.

Charlie's dying was the flying low phrase, round my way.

Oh that takes me back! So did we! I'm 53.

It's not a question of silhouetted legs being alarming. For me they spoil the look of the dress- particularly if the dress also clings without a slip.

Also I generally just don’t want my bum and knickers on view - if I did I wouldn’t bother wearing a dress over the top!

LadyDP · 25/08/2022 09:28

I haven't got a girdle but I wear Spanx which is the modern version of a girdle isn't it. I wear a slip under some dresses and skirts. Clothes hang much better

picklemewalnuts · 25/08/2022 09:43

There's another thread about scrunch bum leggings. Makes me smile how some of us are hiding the body while others are proudly displaying it.

I know it's a choice and a style and a preference. I'm interested by the contrast though.

I've moved into a 'don't care what you think' phase, probably fuelled by my mother's obsession with what people will think.

If my bra strap shows, so what? If my legs are visible when I'm silhouetted against the light, so be it.

It's absolutely a choice to look good, groomed, smart etc and obviously essential to be appropriately dressed for work.

I'm not going to feel ashamed for failing to hide my legs/bra/VPL though- and we absolutely used to be!

I'm happy now to leave that higher level of grooming to others, unless it's a special occasion! It's a relief!

I remember Princess Di causing an audible gasp when she turned up at the Met Gal in ny in 1996 in a slip dress by Dior!

me too!

Me too! Often wear slips

GoldenMirror · 25/08/2022 09:47

“It’s raining in Paris” 😃

Maireas · 25/08/2022 09:51

Absolutely, @picklemewalnuts - we shouldn't feel like that, however, I'm a secondary school teacher and don't want my undies on view, so am cautious on that front! However, I have colleagues who obviously don't care if you can see their pants.
Anyway, as pp have said, slips can improve the line and comfort of many skirts and dresses. So it's not just "modesty" (shudders at word)

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 25/08/2022 09:54

Perhaps going back to wearing undergarments would be prudent in the coming fuel cost crisis!

Maireas · 25/08/2022 09:55

Thermal vests will probably sell well in the coming months....

picklemewalnuts · 25/08/2022 10:01

I was a primary teacher and had a whole host of wardrobe restrictions. No elasticated waists and DC could (and did) unintentionally pull them down.

My secondary teacher friend was a camisoles and vests and bras and tops kind of woman. Different pressures!

I did a load of washing yesterday so that I'd have light pants available to wear under my light coloured clothes. DS was fascinated, he'd never considered what colour boxers to wear under his trousers.

And girls school blouses that show bras. There's such a lot to think about, as a woman getting dressed.

StarlightLady · 25/08/2022 11:09

Bra straps show - you have a bra on.

Knickerline on view - you have knickers on.

lt’s weird that the people who seem to worry about these things the most are often the same people who would be concerned if someone thought they had no underwear on at all 🤔

Maireas · 25/08/2022 11:11

Do many women really worry about bra straps and knicker lines showing?
Perhaps those from very conservative religious traditions.

Princess Di was absolutely stunning! Was that the dress she danced in with John Travolta?
