Weird how style change

I've been sorting through MiL's clothing as she has far too much and can only wear easy access stuff. I've found drawer after drawer of slips and camisoles. The odd thing is that she would be wearing them under clothes but now they are clothes. Some are seriously pretty too. One slip is like a damask , pale print with tulips .

Isn't it odd how quickly fashion changes. I'd guess these would be 80s at the earliest

I still wear a slip under every dress . The M&S cool comfort ones are wonderful and I take one on holidays too to use as a nightie . I love the way a slip makes dresses hang better.

I agree. I can't imagine not wearing one with an unlined dress. And as Twizbe points out slips can be washed after every wear - a dress doesn't need to be washed after every wear.

ProseccoStorm · 23/08/2022 22:14

I'm mid 30s and wear slips and silk camisoles under things.

They keep me warm and help keep things smooth on unlined dresses. Clothes tend to hang better with a slip.

Silk camisoles are much nicer than vests in winter. I like the peak of lace under a cashmere v neck, and you can leave one extra button undone on a blouse. A hint of something but it's all concealed.

Granted, I think I'm in a minority, I don't know anyone else who wears them my age.

Sadik · 23/08/2022 22:38

@mocktail I wondered who'd be first to mention 'Charlie's dead' - for when your slip was showing under school uniform skirt. I'm in my 50s, in secondary 1980s, and wore a slip as an extra layer when it was cold in winter. Plus the stiff broderie anglaise petticoats under skirt look late 70s / early 80s

dontyoubother · 23/08/2022 22:53

@Horological I certainly don't have any such ideas of people in their 60s. I suppose my point was really that it's surprising to me that my mum, who I consider pretty young, was suggesting a slip.

I'm early 60s. I only wear dresses and occasionally skirts. I can't imagine not wearing a full or half slip under an unlined dress or skirt. The material hangs so much better.

Cocolapew · 23/08/2022 23:17

The pp was obviously talking about her Mum, not over 60's in general.

dontyoubother · 23/08/2022 23:20

@Cocolapew Exactly, thank you. Christ on a bike.

Mortonpup · 24/08/2022 07:16

Charlie's dead used here too!

Riverlee · 24/08/2022 07:19

I referred them as petticoats, and ‘getting a shimmy on’ meaning, ‘ hurry up, move faster’.

... because she's a practical person! See various pp - the material hangs better and the look is improved because so many clothes now are unlined. Polyester/viscose I find more cool and comfortable with a cotton half slip.

picklemewalnuts · 24/08/2022 07:42

It amuses me when people rage about ageism, assuming that their experience was the norm. It's a really varied culture across the country. What was happening in London and other cities took a long time to get out to the edges of the country! There were lots of less fashion forward areas. When I look at what my parents were doing in the 60's, it's not what you read about!

picklemewalnuts · 24/08/2022 07:44

And the slips stopping your skirt from riding up- I never quite managed that!

The reason I gave up on slips was that they rode up between the skirt and tights. I wonder why?

I'm feeling all nostalgic now, and wondering about trying a slip dress under my clothes, when winter strikes!

CoverYourselfInChocolateGlory · 24/08/2022 07:49

I wear a slip every now and then under certain skirts or dresses. I'm 45. I'd love a really pretty one but mine are just from M&S!

@dontyoubother

My mum (early 60s) has asked me once or twice "haven't you got a nice slip to go under that?"

How odd. I am in my early 60s and I was a punk, my mum was a hippy. My grandmother (born 1902) was the only person I knew who wore petticoats or slips.

Why is it that ideas of the over 60s are stuck somewhere in the 1980s? Time has moved on. People in their 60s, 70s and 80s went through the whole counter cultural thing and consider young people pretty conservative.

Well I suppose if her daughter’s dress was see through/showing underwear it’s not necessarily that she’s some old fuddy-duddy but that she was trying to tactfully let her know. I wouldn’t want my knickers showing but I see it a lot through people leggings/see through dress.

WellTidy · 24/08/2022 07:58

Feeling ancient. I’m late 40s, and I’ve worn half slips under skirts all my life. I have them in white, bide and black from M&S. previously bought 18 inch length, but now they’re very much 21 inches! I haven’t replaced them for years though, they seem to last and last.

Probably because she's referencing her actual mum who is actually in her 60's and actually said it? I could be wrong though.

LadyWithLapdog · 24/08/2022 08:15

I’ve just read a book about women in Communist prisons in the 50s & 60s and they were allowed to have a slip. How ingrained it must have been that even to those monstrous bastards this was considered an essential.

LadyEloise1 · 24/08/2022 08:33

Maireas · 22/08/2022 19:41

I also have a couple of those M&S climate cool ones, they're lovely and stop clothes clinging and help if the dress or skirt is viscose or polyester.
They really are incredibly comfortable.

I have M&S half slips too for wearing under linen or cotton summer dresses that can be quite transparent and the slip has a smoothing effect.

There must be a market for them as M&S has loads in different colours ( black, white and nude ) and lengths.

Maireas · 24/08/2022 08:36

Morning, @LadyEloise1 - yes, my local M&S has a big selection. They last - I've had mine for years. They're excellent for work - I don't have to worry about something being see through or clingy or whatever. Adds a layer of comfort, imo.
I agree with you about linen clothes as well.

TheMoth · 24/08/2022 08:55

I used to steal my mum's slips to wear as dresses, then raid charity shops for other ones. I used to like the ones made of material that almost seemed to pour.

JudgeRindersMinder · 24/08/2022 09:01

WhoopItUp · 23/08/2022 13:08

I’m early 40s and wore an ‘underskirt’ as it’s called round my way under thin dresses in childhood and in my early 20s. I still do sometimes - I agree with all the other comments that clothes hang better with them on.

Early 50s here and I always had an underskirt under my school skirt -it acted like a lining would, extra warmth and made it hang better.
My mum always wore a full length slip under her brown district nurse’s dress

The ageism in that particular remark was the statement that the poster's mother was 60 but "young". It's the implication that she might be 60 but she's not like the other ancient 60 year old fuddy duddies with their funny old fashioned ways.

There are lots of practical reasons for wearing a slip- it reduces wear on the dress; it makes it hang better; it prevents you showing your knickers and as it gets colder it adds a layer.

RudsyFarmer · 24/08/2022 09:27

I wear petticoats often. Under light coloured summer skirts and a dark one under dark coloured long skirts. I absolutely hate the thought of a skirt or dress being see through and people seeing my huge thighs 🤮

AnchorWHAT · 24/08/2022 09:30

mocktail · 23/08/2022 21:36

I remember wearing an underskirt occasionally as a child. (Must have been in the 80s.) I also remember being told the meaning of the phrase "Charlie's dead" which apparently was code for "your underskirt is showing" - anyone else heard of that?!

It was referred to as ‘its snowing down south’ in my neck of the woods 😁

JudgeRindersMinder · 24/08/2022 09:36

I have the feeling they might be about to make a bit of a comeback this year for keeping warm purposes!

This thread has had me looking at thermal underwear on eBay!
