Weird how style change

I've been sorting through MiL's clothing as she has far too much and can only wear easy access stuff. I've found drawer after drawer of slips and camisoles. The odd thing is that she would be wearing them under clothes but now they are clothes. Some are seriously pretty too. One slip is like a damask , pale print with tulips .

Isn't it odd how quickly fashion changes. I'd guess these would be 80s at the earliest

I'm in my 60s and it wouldn't occur to me to wear a 'slip' nowadays. I can see they would give a smooth line under a clingy dress but they have very negative associations for me. When I was a girl we called them petticoats and they were the most horrible, itchy, staticky, nylon things ever.

The only one I have now is a massive tiered one to wear under a fifties style swing skirt on the rare occasions I go to a jive club.

faretheewell · 25/08/2022 13:10

I've a couple of slips to wear under sheer dresses. One came with the dress it goes with. I'm in my fifties. Don't wear them all the time but do know satin ones can stop cotton sticking to nylon tights. We don't wear tights as much as in previous decades either. They were also good to prevent stocking tops showing, if a skirt lifts in the wind, for people who don't like tights but want to wear something on their legs. I wear trousers and jeans more often now though so less need for lots of slips.

My teenage daughter wears 70's housecoats as fashionable coats. Over black clothes & her docs. This is her latest. It's even got the wee pocket for the housewife's fags. Proud st Michael label 🤣

I remember slip dresses worn with T shirt underneath. I quite liked that look. I was also significantly younger, maybe that’s why.

We said it was 'raining in Paris' when an underskirt showed.

Are you Scottish? I heard this phrase used in Glasgow.

Thermal vests will probably sell well in the coming months....

and long johns!

cordiate · 25/08/2022 15:35

SizzlerFizzler, yes, Scottish🙂 East of Scotland, though, not Glasgow.

Sugarsandwiches · 25/08/2022 15:42

I’m in my 30s and always wear a slip under dresses for warmth 😂 tights, slip, short dresses - smooths out the dress and keeps me cosy. Same as others it’s the M&S one.

I've never heard it , in any of its variations.

Do many women really worry about bra straps and knicker lines showing?
Perhaps those from very conservative religious traditions.

I'm a hard line atheist and always have been. I spend eye-watering amounts on clothes and dresses. Very few dresses are lined. I don't want the line and hang of my dress spoilt by anything- hence always wear a slip under an unlined dress.

I absolutely agree with you, and that's why I wear them too. So few garments are lined properly. Plus I actually don't want my pants on display!
I was responding to a previous poster saying that wearing a slip was just about bra straps and knicker lines. I am saying it definitely is not!

I’m not religious or conservative. Still don’t want people seeing my knickers! Obviously I’m not really talking about a bra strap showing, but I’ve seen people out and about with their underwear clearly visibly through a see through/stretched too thin dress or leggings. I wouldn’t want that. Not because I’m religious, but because I don’t think it looks nice.

No - I absolutely agree with you! That's my whole point - it's not about bra straps and knicker lines.
It's exactly as you say. Sorry my point wasn't clear - it was in response to someone else.

I'm perfectly happy to show my bra if it looks right with the outfit as a whole, skimpy top with a pretty visible bra for example, and will wear tops that aren't dissimilar to bras for night out. In the 90s I was the proud wearer of the visible (diamanté trimmed!) thong. So it's not modesty that makes me want to keep my underwear invisible at times, it's just that it can spoil the look of an outfit to see a functional looking bra strap or VPL.

Oh ok haha! Just confused at people acting like it’s unusual to not want your knickers on full display!

Kanaloa · 25/08/2022 19:49

And yes agree it’s more about it looking bad/not looking nice than some modesty issue. I always reckoned maybe people didn’t know but maybe they do and just don’t care! I find it’s especially bad with black leggings, I won’t wear them unless I’m wearing a huge jumper over the top.

I know! I absolutely agree with you. I hate see through clothes, but a pp just said that point to which I responded.

LadyPoison · 25/08/2022 19:49

I still wear slips on occasion. Dresses and skirts ( even quite expensive ones) are so cheaply made and the fabric so poor now that they need all the help they can get and a slip definitely improves the line.

Maybe we’re in the minority 😂 and actually the dresses are see through on purpose. I’m amazed at how many clothes do seem to be see through nowadays. I struggle to find a white t-shirt that isn’t totally see through, or a pair of good leggings.

It's funny because I've never worn them for warmth, just as a lining, to improve the look, stop clinging etc. I suppose you could get warmer ones as an extra layer.

I agree with this. I'm old but hadn't realised how old-fashioned it is to have a couple of slips to wear under clingy, unlined dresses.

Squirrelsnut · 26/08/2022 09:37

Shimmy = chemise.

I wore cotton waist slips and the occasional full slip as a child in the70s and 80s. Mum always wore a slip.

Ridingladybugs · 26/08/2022 09:42

This thread has made me realise I need a half slip! I actually ( feel a bit foolish now) didn’t realise you could still get them so easily but will be great for under skirts and dresses when I’m wearing tights

picklemewalnuts · 26/08/2022 09:52

I'm starting to wonder now if my mum's constant nagging may have been about style rather than modesty.

Actually I don't think it matters. It's the expectation that 'Thou shalt look like this...' that actually grinds, regardless of the motivation. I can look however I like.

You can of course look however you like - and if you prefer dresses to cling to you and show your underwear that's your prerogative.

It's just a bit tiresome that anyone who for the several valid and practical reasons given on this thread is assumed to be any or all of :-
Old
Old fashioned
Obsessed with modesty
Deeply religious
