Weird how style change

I've been sorting through MiL's clothing as she has far too much and can only wear easy access stuff. I've found drawer after drawer of slips and camisoles. The odd thing is that she would be wearing them under clothes but now they are clothes. Some are seriously pretty too. One slip is like a damask , pale print with tulips .

Isn't it odd how quickly fashion changes. I'd guess these would be 80s at the earliest

My mum always had slips - hard to imagine ever wearing one now under a skirt. It was as though you were being a bit indecent if you didn't have one - she bought them for me (1970s) hated them - got all tangled up!!
Another one was housecoats- very thin cotton worn over day clothes - actually very sensible really, but now we just change if our clothes get dirty - I guess clothes washing was a lot more hassle when you just had a twin tub.

I remember wearing mast nylon petticoats under my dresses when l was little in the early 70’s.

Sometimes they were called a ‘shimmy’. Like a close fitting sleeveless white dress with frills on the hem and arms. I had 2, both white. One with pink frills and one with blue.

Maireas · 22/08/2022 18:40

I always wear a cotton half slip under a summer skirt. Too many clothes are see through. This obviously doesn't matter to most women, but I don't like it. Also makes the clothes more comfortable and hang better.

I used to wear white cotton and lace Edwardian petticoats peeping out underneath tiered midi skirts in the 70's, loved that look! And an extra layer was useful in those cold bleak winters of discontent!
I found a suitcase of pre-war silk camis and slips at a jumble sale once, they were so delicate. Also very tiny, only a few fitted me! Just sort of thing that people wear as a top with jeans or a floaty skirt now.

My grandma bought my size 8 mum a girdle at 15. I suppose it was something to attach stockings too if nothing else. She also has slips, full and half length.

Ive never worn any Of them.

House coats sound very practical though.

DillDanding · 22/08/2022 19:08

I vaguely remember my mum having half-slips. In a drawer, I don't recall her actually wearing them.

astorsback · 22/08/2022 19:14

People used to receive them as gifts back then (80s and prior), as they were seen as necessary but nice, if you see what I mean.

People used to keep the nicer ones for best, as well as having more practical, cotton ones for everyday use.

I was given one by my boyfriend's grandmother on my 22nd birthday.

OldTinHat · 22/08/2022 19:24

I saw two ladies walk into a shop this afternoon and noticed they both had slips on under their skirts - they were hanging just below the skirt hem. Made me smile and now I've read this post!

I still wear slips though, I love them. Warmer and give a smoother line.

My mum (early 60s) has asked me once or twice "haven't you got a nice slip to go under that?" I suppose when she thinks my skirt/dress is a bit see through. God knows why she thinks I'd have one.

Maireas · 22/08/2022 19:41

I also have a couple of those M&S climate cool ones, they're lovely and stop clothes clinging and help if the dress or skirt is viscose or polyester.
They really are incredibly comfortable.

dudsville · 22/08/2022 19:46

My grandmother wore slips. For some reason she gave me one. It was a true thing of beauty but i was young and although i appreciated it, it didn't fit me. I keep thinking some day i will think it's ok to splash out on an equally beautiful item. When i do i will wear it often. I should say, I've bought a slip as an adult, but every day practical slips are dull and the alternative seems to be bridal sexy wear. Some day...

mamaduckbone · 22/08/2022 20:21

I remember my mum wearing a girdle and a slip when I was a child in the 80s.

LizziesTwin · 22/08/2022 20:26

A full length slip is really good under a sequinned dress, stops it itching. I think they’re also good at outdoor summer events as an extra layer, keeps you warm without wearing a jacket or cardigan.

Riverlee · 22/08/2022 20:33

I used to wear petticoats under skirts in early 80s. Actually, I have a dress that could do with one nowadays.

gogohmm · 22/08/2022 20:38

I've had camisoles for under shirts and full length (fairly short) slips for under dresses. Back when I wore office wear. Styles have changed now.

tobee · 22/08/2022 20:58

I always assumed slips/petticoats were the last to go from when everyone was supposed to wear layers and layers. They were useful to stop skirts clinging through static but I've not worn one in decades.

I know dm (86 years old) used to have a liberty bodice as a child. And her dm, my dgm, (born 1908) nearly always wore a bodice/girdle except on really hot days when she let it all hung out! Grin She was quite a large, very cuddly woman and I vividly remember the feeling of resistance under the clothing!!

tobee · 22/08/2022 21:00

Also I remember the first thing my dsis made in needlework at secondary school (late 70s) was a 4 gore skirt with a strip of white broderie anglaise attached to the bottom of it to simulate a Edwardian style petticoat.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/08/2022 21:02

My mum (early 60s) has asked me once or twice "haven't you got a nice slip to go under that?"

I’ll be 59 in November. None of my contemporaries including older ever wore slips. God forbid!

l couldn’t get one on under my drainpipes, motorbike boots, cut off t shirt and biker jacket.

JorisBonson · 22/08/2022 21:04

I'm 37 and I wear slips under every dress. My nana told me that only slatterns don't wear slips and it stuck with me 🤣

Verbena87 · 22/08/2022 21:20

I bought myself a bias cut silk one as a nightie in my teens with earnings from my first job. Now I am 35 and sleep in frumpy pajamas or nothing, but it’s brilliant to stop a dress clinging and give an extra layer of warmth. I’ve got a wool vest and matching long knickers as well actually 🤣 - I like being able to be warm without bundling up in millions of jumpers.

Housewife2010 · 22/08/2022 22:33

I remember my Mum wearing a panty girdle back in the 1970s. She would wear it over her tights.

Are you from East Anglia? Never heard the word shimmy used elsewhere!

Dilbertian · 22/08/2022 23:07

My dm ran a business from home in the late 70s through to early 90s. Weekday mornings, she would put on her tights, girdle and slip, with fluffy bedroom slippers, and her quilted housecoat buttoned up to the neck over everything. If she had to go out to a meeting she would swap housecoat and slippers for a smart outfit and elegant shoes, then swap back when she came home. She always did her makeup before changing, to prevent any stains in the smart clothes.

Weekends were the same (undies and housecoat) except no slip, often no tights, and casual clothes rather than smart. Always the girdle.

Dm seemed to live in her quilted housecoat Smile
