Rome wedding! What do wear!

My cousin is getting married in Rome, his girlfriend is Italian. They work in the entertainment industry as producers. It literally couldn’t get any worse for upping the bloody stakes on being surrounded by gorgeous lovelies.
The dress code is summer chic. It starts at 5pm so obviously what I wear to the reception will carry on into the night. It’s also a 15 min or so walk from our air bnb, uphill!
Haven’t been to a wedding for ages and am having confidence crisis as put on but of weight round my tummy and really don’t know what to wear! Guests will probably be all super smart and chic Romans and arty types. I don’t want to look like a sac of potatoes nor some middle aged country bumpkin. What the hell do I wear! Any suggestions on where to even start looking! I don’t fit into any of my previous “party dresses” and they look dated now. Please stylish MN crew help point me in the right direction. I know it’s not about me but still be nice to feel good and look nice.

I wore this outfit to three weddings, one of which was in Rome. I was overdressed with the fascinator on. I was really underwhelmed by the lack of Italian Chic to be honest. I'd say go with what you'd normally wear. It was a July wedding so quite hot. One of the ladies wore a gorgeous trouser suit with a scarf and flat shoes and looked lovely. Go for comfortable and stylish.

I was in the airport yesterday and thought this was lovely, no idea if it would suit you but this is what I would wear to a wedding.

gogohmm · 22/08/2022 16:24

I wore a fitted summer dress, wrap and heeled sandals. Nobody wore hats thankfully. I was middling style wise.

gogohmm · 22/08/2022 16:24

@Goldencup

Nobody was wearing flowing dresses at the wedding I attended

Whataretheodds · 22/08/2022 16:26

Tell us about your size/shape and colouring and budget?

Haudyourwheesht · 22/08/2022 16:28

That Ted Baker dress is lovely! Wish I had an excuse to wear it.

This is my regular contribution to these threads.

not Italy admittedly but I have been to several weddings abroad and the only properly dressed up people were the Brits. Locals were far more casual.

I know you’ll want to look nice but I’d generally expect it to be less “dressy” than a British wedding. There might well be some glam going on but that will be the exception not The norm

WildCherryBlossom · 22/08/2022 16:35

Is it in a Catholic Church? It might be a good idea to have shoulders covered if so.

Polimolly · 22/08/2022 16:52

Have a look at some of these options. I find Italian weddings and Spanish ones very similar

Ebonyhorse · 22/08/2022 17:23

this is 100% polyester. Not a good match with an abroad wedding!

babyjellyfish · 22/08/2022 17:34

I'd wear a nice jumpsuit and bring a scarf to wear over your shoulders for the church service.

Wouldn't bother with a hat or fascinator.

Lineala · 22/08/2022 17:37

A simple sleeveless shift dress preferably navy blue or other plain colour and a low/mid heeled court. Well groomed hair nails and simple jewellery.

Lineala · 22/08/2022 17:37

Oh and knee length.

StorieAnna · 22/08/2022 17:38

@Goldencup - that Ted dress is perfect.

morekidsthanhands1 · 22/08/2022 19:10

I’m olive skinned with dark hair so can wear bright colours. budget under £300 I think ?? The lower the better!
I’m avoiding white and black obviously and it’s not in a church so don’t have to be too conservative but def nothing I can’t wear a bra with!!! Not strapless either as I want to dance and don’t want any wardrobe malfunctions when I wave my arms in the air!!!
some beautiful suggestions

I’ve just come back from holiday from italy and of an evening the Italians all dressed rather glamorously.
So I would say something like this but with something to go over your shoulders for church.

morekidsthanhands1 · 22/08/2022 19:18

Love them all!
def nothing above knee! Was thinking more floaty than fitted in the skirt. And would consider a jumpsuit tho always find them annoying when need the loo.
oh god, just remembered I also have a friend from
uni days 50th bday dinner in posh London restaurant the weekend before! With lots old faces I’ve not seen for ages! Shoot me now! I really don’t usually have much going on usually but next month is a social apocalypse!!!
be good to wear dress or jumpsuit to both events!

You don’t have to avoid black at an Italian wedding.

ClaphamLane · 22/08/2022 19:31

Glamorous, society, Rome wedding. Gorgeous to look at and very ‘out there’. Not a shift dress in sight!
