Are black tights still ok?

My work outfits pre covid often included midi skirts and dresses with black tights and heeled boots. Since then i've switched to longer skirt lengths with bare legs and Doc Martens.

I do miss the tights and heels though, but just don't think it looks right with anything longer than knee length. I'm picturing a black blazer with a contrasting knee length dress, black tights and black boots. Am I on the right lines, stylish people?

If you've found this page in search of tights that have been tried and tested by fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to the best tights useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ

Yes of course- why wouldn't they not be?

glamourousindierockandroll · 18/08/2022 09:26

Because I don't see them as often - it's always bare legs or trousers - and the styles of dresses are very long.

OP, the reason you don't see them is the weather! We are very much in bare leg season for those who wear dresses and skirts. The regular trouser wearers tend to stay in trousers but perhaps lighter fabrics or linen.

No, I am aware that people don't wear opaque tights in a heatwave. I'm talking over a longer period; maybe two years. It seems to be either trousers or long skirts.

I don't seem to see shorter dresses unless they're very short indeed which wouldn't be suitable for me or my job.

If course you can still wear black tights!

Just carry on with your boots and dress/skirt but add tights. You don't need to wear heels if you don't want to. I think it is the heels that are the problem rather than the tights, they tend to look a bit dated especially with a midi or midaxi as flats and flatforms are more current.

goldenbag · 18/08/2022 14:28

Yes. I see them (and wear them) every work day in winter!

Jollyhungry · 18/08/2022 14:57

I don't care if they're on trend. There's no way I'm having bare legs in my office! Brrrrr!❄

helenaaise · 18/08/2022 15:08

They're definitely still fine. I see them a lot when the weather is cooler.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 18/08/2022 15:50

I wear thick black tights from Sept/Oct until the end of May. It's too cold not too!

KimmySchmitt · 18/08/2022 15:58

I think it still looks okay (usual caveat of wear what suits you, etc) but I do think opaques look less current now. I think a midi skirt, DMs and thinner tights looks good though, e.g. 15 denier.

SpaceyGirl · 18/08/2022 16:04

I have definitely seen black tights when it was cold enough.
Midis are an odd one, I would wear nude tights or grey with boots.
I think black in lower dernier would work well with midi length but a darker higher dernier and more opaqueness look better with shorter dresses.

halfpasteleven · 18/08/2022 16:07

I do think that a lower denier seems to be the trend this year too..

I have both and will wear them when it's cold enough to!

SisterAgatha · 18/08/2022 16:10

I still wear midi’s with DM’s and white socks.

Heeled shoes/boots and tights I would save for winter with shorter mini or knee length skirts.

SisterAgatha · 18/08/2022 16:12

I sometimes wear patterned wooly grey tights with red DM’s too. I think spotty low denier with a plain black skirt is something I want to try tho.

xogossipgirlxo · 18/08/2022 16:33

I think they look bit dated now. I love them though, but I noticed it's thin tights era now.

helenaaise · 18/08/2022 17:59

How much lower denier? Around 10? I usually wear around 40, and woollen or lined on snowy days.

glamourousindierockandroll · 18/08/2022 18:07

This is what I mean - it looks very frumpy when I see someone in a midi dress with black opaques and flats now. I used to always wear knee length dresses with black opaques. I liked it when black shoe boots were a thing...

If I was slimmer, I think black jumper, black tights, black boots with a contrasting mini skirt can look good, but not on me!

Maybe I need to stick to long dresses and DMs or trousers and flats.

Have black tights ever been not OK? If we're talking about sheer tights rather than opaques, try doubling up for winter. Pair of sheer black tights over a pair of sheer nude tights.

Celia24 · 18/08/2022 22:14

I still wear them a lot and will continue to...don't care what's on trend tbh. And I wear best dressed in the office each year 😁

Thinner opaque would expose my knobbly knees I'm afraid...

Black tights have never not been ok and neither have opaques.

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 18/08/2022 22:48

ill continue to wear black opaques in autumn winter. I wear with ankle boots. I don’t follow trends tbh and lower denier just ladder too easily. But I’m 43 and past caring.

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 18/08/2022 22:50

Should add that I wear them with knee length skirts/dresses. I wear midis/maxi length in summer.

StandaloneSal · 18/08/2022 23:06

I’ll continue to wear black tights in the winter. I don’t go lower than 80 denier because they’re not warm and you can see your legs through lower denier, which means continued shaving/moisturising maintenance that I cannot be arsed with all year round <lazy>.

Anyone who continues with bare legs in cold weather is a fashion victim.

TheChosenTwo · 18/08/2022 23:17

They’re black tights - I presumed they were the safest option ever 😂
to be fair I just wear what a like and don’t give a crap if anyone thinks I’m fashionable or not (which is lucky as I’m sure if anyone ever cared enough to notice they’d definitely decide I was not!), I will not give up my black snag tights for all the tea in China!
plot twist… I don’t actually drink tea 🙈

BobbinThreadbare123 · 19/08/2022 09:25

I'm a goth...all my clothes are black so I'm sticking with the opaques. Also I live somewhere bloody cold!
