Has anyone just disposed of all their skinny jeans?

I must have 20+ pairs hogging wardrobe space. I haven’t worn a pair since the start of the pandemic but I don’t know how much is dated style versus how much is they are not the obvious choice to sit at home in! The topshop ones have earned their keep but I’m falling into the trap of handwringing over more premium pairs that I’ve only worn a handful of times. I do have other denim but no shape I love as much as the skinny Jean and struggle with styling especially in winter when I’m not a fan of a chilly gap.

am I mad and deluded to hang on to them…help me take the plunge if so!

If they're your favourite shape of Jean then just wear them.

Lottapianos · 14/08/2022 10:05

I wore skinny jeans for at least ten years but ditched them last year for mom jeans. They're hideously unflattering but so comfortable and happen to be in fashion so why not!

RogueV · 14/08/2022 10:05

No I haven’t ditched mine at all

Lifeadmin · 14/08/2022 10:07

wear what suits you , also they’ll be back. My boyfriend in the 80’s predicted that drainpipes jeans as they were called then would go out of style soon! 40 years later we’re still wearing them.

thebottomofmypencilcase · 14/08/2022 10:08

I've found myself moving towards slightly looser legged jeans but even so there are occasions where a skinnier fit could be useful, I think. Not even necessarily for fashionable reasons- eg they're easier to tuck into wellies!

If I were you I wouldn't chuck them all just yet...

TheBitterBoy · 14/08/2022 10:08

I would box them all up apart from one or two of the 'premium' pairs. If after a couple of months you haven't found yourself wearing them, even with no other options, or you don't enjoy wearing them or feel good in them, they can go. They ate taking up valuable space, and yes, you spent good money on them, but that money is gone and keeping the jeans and not wearing them isn't going to get you that money back. Repeat until the pile is only jeans that fit and feel good in.

pastaandpesto · 14/08/2022 10:13

I can't imagine having over 20 pairs of jeans! I usually only have two or maybe three pairs, and I wear jeans every day!

I recently made the switch to boyfriend jeans and as soon as I did I realised how awfully ageing the skinnies were, so they went to fabric recycling. They were knackered to be fair though. If I were you I would keep a couple of your very favourite pairs and get rid of the others.

liveforsummer · 14/08/2022 10:17

They aren't out out - they just aren't the mist fashionable style right now. They've been around so long I'd argue they were a wardrobe staple rather than a passing trend and in any shops around here still the most represented Jean style. It's of others but just a couple of each style - loads of skinny options . Wear them if you like them and I agree in winter they are far more practical than other styles

Wazzzzzuuuuuuup · 14/08/2022 10:21

I've just bought some more. I've experimented with straight, mom and bootcut and I just feel chubby and shapeless in all but the slimmest straights. I've got good legs and skinnies look good on me so meh, fashion

TheOGCCL · 14/08/2022 10:23

I have quite a few pairs of skinnies and even though they don't feel quite right I am finding it hard to part with them. Most of mine are quite low rise, I think high rise skinnies are more current as you can tuck things in. Its interesting that shops like New Look and River Island still have a very large number of skinny options available. It's become a classic not a trend. Like the wearing of jeans themselves.

And I definitely think in the dead of winter, especially if trying to be smart and warm, they may be useful. There's at least one thread on here already pondering what looser fit jeans go with what boots and it's not necessarily that easy especially if you are not into high fashion.

I'd leave it six month so then you know they've had a good chance in a range of weathers, if you have the space and if you still like them as a concept. Skinny jeans elongate the legs, no escaping that fact and useful whilst flat shoes are more current than high heels.

But I wouldn't worry about sunk costs on the premium ones. No point forcing yourself into something that doesn't seem right. Labels sell on ebay or Vinted.

skippy67 · 14/08/2022 10:24

Won't be ditching mine because I like them.

QueSyrahSyrah · 14/08/2022 10:31

Fashion be damned, they'll have to prise my skinny jeans off my cold dead legs.

(I also recently bought a pair of high-waisted bootcut since they seem to be coming back in, and thank god there's a drought because the full 90s horror of puddle-wet hems slowing seeping dampness up your knees has come flooding back to me. Pun intended).

Yep this is half the reason I love my skinnies and will never part with them! I spent the mid nineties in flares and Converse and I'm amazed I didn't end up with trench foot!

Galliano · 14/08/2022 10:54

I work in an industry where jeans are acceptable in the office but I can’t imagine wearing skinny jeans in the office now…it would age me which I can’t really afford to have happen if I want to stay employed. I also can’t see going on a night out in nice top and skinnies any more but haven’t been on many night outs either since covid, maybe people do still do that? Not sure putting aside for 2 more months will prove much as they are unworn for 2.5 years (with possible exception of tucked into wellies for a muddy walk one or twice!).

I work in a pub on a Saturday night - people definitely still go out in skinnies. A lot of the latest styles lend themselves more to casual outfits

Divebar2021 · 14/08/2022 10:57

I’m interested in all this talk of soggy hems… none of my jeans are full length. I don’t think anyone needs 20 pairs of jeans regardless of whether they’re in fashion or not. And yes I do see women wearing skinny jeans but the ones I’ve noticed have not been particularly stylish. I’ve kept one pair for wellies and that’s it!

liveforsummer · 14/08/2022 10:57

To add my pub is not in a student area. I imagine it's very different there

liveforsummer · 14/08/2022 10:58

@Divebar2021 the soggy hems is specifically boot cut jeans - which tend to be full length

ChickPizz · 14/08/2022 11:00

I ditched my blue skinny jeans a couple of years ago when I realised they didn’t suit me. I’ve kept my black skinnies though. They’re just such a practical winter item to wear casually with boots and big jumpers. I don’t care if they’re not ‘on trend’!

SpringIntoChaos · 14/08/2022 11:57

God I'm old! I didn't even realise there was a rule about what type/style I should be wearing! I assumed we wore what suited our body shape! Silly me 🤷‍♀️

bcc89 · 14/08/2022 12:28

Worrying that you're worried that skinny jeans "aging you" will make you lose your job? 🤨

AuntieStella · 14/08/2022 12:35

Still wearing mine - it’s easily the shape that suits me best (I’m mot willowy enough of thigh to withstand wider shapes, and I prefer skinny to tapered/mom)

Just wear what you feel best in

I think the shapes that outline the body (skinny, tapered/Mom, leggings/sports gear) will continue to be worn, and therefore there will be tops that go with them. Also, going right back to paraphrase Nancy Mitford, clothes that stick to the female form are those which look best over time and keep looking right.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 14/08/2022 13:33

I'll be wearing my skinny jeans as long as I live
I wear jeans every day( have 10 identical pairs)
They suit my shape and very short legs and I don't like jeans 'flapping around my ankles" I'm 57 and just don't care!

TeapotTitties · 14/08/2022 13:37

I don't get the Mumsnet obsession with skinny jeans being 'out of fashion'.

They're just a staple part of the wardrobe now, just like leggings are.

They're neither in or out of 'fashion'.

Exactly! What a horrible waste of money and resources just because you've been told by some strangers (with a vested interest in getting you to spend more) that the things you own already aren't 'fashionable' anymore.
