Has anyone just disposed of all their skinny jeans?

I must have 20+ pairs hogging wardrobe space. I haven’t worn a pair since the start of the pandemic but I don’t know how much is dated style versus how much is they are not the obvious choice to sit at home in! The topshop ones have earned their keep but I’m falling into the trap of handwringing over more premium pairs that I’ve only worn a handful of times. I do have other denim but no shape I love as much as the skinny Jean and struggle with styling especially in winter when I’m not a fan of a chilly gap.

am I mad and deluded to hang on to them…help me take the plunge if so!

Can someone please explain to me why skinny jeans are ageing?

BigWoollyJumpers · 14/08/2022 15:19

Adding that both my DD's wear them, at 19 and 25 years old.

I've only got one pair which I hope to get back into one day. Fat chance. 😂

I stupidly replaced my favourite (worn out) size 14 skinnies with size 12s. I was temporarily slim enough to find them comfortable pre-covid. Now I am not and they’re discontinued. I either need to lose a stone, be practically cut in half after lunch or buy new jeans. I can’t see either happening and I’ve lived the last two winters in leggings instead. Maybe HRT will help…..

God I'm old! I didn't even realise there was a rule about what type/style I should be wearing! I assumed we wore what suited our body shape! Silly me 🤷‍♀️

Me too @SpringIntoChaos 😆

Even Hush are selling skinny jeans on their "new in" page so on that note - I hereby declare skinny jeans still on trend

Haters gonna hate ;) but facts are facts

I've just bought some more. I've experimented with straight, mom and bootcut and I just feel chubby and shapeless in all but the slimmest straights. I've got good legs and skinnies look good on me so meh, fashion

I agree!

On my shape skinnies are by far the most flattering - mom jeans and straight jeans just make me look two sizes bigger!!

I tend to favour the M&S Ivy Skinny (in either light blue or white denim) as they have a slightly looser feel.

Boot cut are flattering but not really in fashion IMO.

Leftbutcameback · 14/08/2022 15:31

If you have enough storage space put your favourite ones away in case you decide you want to wear them in a couple of years. Keep one pair in wardrobe for muddy walks and send the rest to charity shops. 2.5 years is a long time not to wear an everyday item.

They’re not.

There is a heck of a lot of casual ageism perpetrated by the fashion industry. Always remember that their aim is to get us to but new as much as possible and as often as possible. And by pushing a wholly unfounded idea that age is somehow relevant, they are seeding the idea that you need to buy replacements for perfectly good items (which you feel good in) just because of the passage of time.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 14/08/2022 15:06

That's far more worrying than worrying whether skinny jeans are in or out.

Which is why I said it's worrying 😂

Wouldloveanother · 14/08/2022 16:58

Pretty much. I’ve kept my black ones, I still like wearing them with a shirt over the top for the office.

Stevie6 · 14/08/2022 17:02

I still wear mine. Soon it will be raining constantly, I'm not ready to go back to the 90s and be wet up to my knees

Wouldloveanother · 14/08/2022 17:02

TinaYouFatLard · 14/08/2022 14:03

I‘m only keeping a pair for the wet and cold hours standing next to the football/rugby pitch that will soon be here. Skinnies are the only style that tucks properly into wellies.

Yes I think they’ll come back in winter because mom jeans are basically impossible to style when it’s cold - ankle on show, they don’t really go with boots etc. Any longer length of coat with mom jeans will cut you in half and make your legs look really short.

woodhill · 14/08/2022 17:07

Agree with the posters saying fashion industry wants us to continue to part with our money

Ooh with rising bills and environmental concerns etc I will continue to wear mine

Numbat2022 · 14/08/2022 17:08

I'm keeping mine for winter. Mostly wearing flares at the moment, but I don't fancy soggy hems like in the 90s, and mom jeans/straight leg etc really don't suit me.

Shinyandnew1 · 14/08/2022 17:10

I’ve been reading posts on MN since 2008 saying that skinny jeans are going out of fashion-most people I know outside teenage years still wear them!

I like them-they suit me whereas baggy/boyfriend/mom jeans look terrible.

I would give skinny bootcut another go as well-I have a very flattering pair of those in the cupboard still!

Twattergy · 14/08/2022 17:10

High waisted skinnies are fine.
20 pairs though!

Reduce to 3 or 4.
Buy less stuff!

EternalPoinsettia · 14/08/2022 17:18

I think a pair of black skinnies is likely to always have a place in my wardrobe, even if only as pp said to tuck into wellies. Blue skinnies do look dated and I wouldn't wear them

britespark1 · 14/08/2022 17:23

I absolutely love mine and will wear them until the day I die. I’ve never been bothered about what’s on trend though. Once the weather turns I live in them with my ankle boots. Cannot wait for autumn!

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 14/08/2022 17:36

I have a pair of black faded Levi's in a skinny style but that's it. Helpful to have one pair but don't feel I need more.

Chubarubrub · 14/08/2022 17:47

I nearly did recently but keeping them for the winter as they do look better with boots imo. Don’t really like the wider legged jeans and boots look - plus the cold air can get in 😂

Beefcurtains79 · 14/08/2022 19:26

There’s a million jobs particularly in the creative industries where you don’t have to look young, but you certainly need to look like you have your finger on the pulse. I find it hard to believe no one’s ever heard of them or come across them tbh.

Galliano · 14/08/2022 21:53

To those concerned for me I work in IT. I’m well remunerated as a senior manager so not thinking of changing industries, but rare for people and particularly women to remain past 55 with my current employer which is only 5 years away for me. I’m not in a role like programme management where skills are more static and it’s hard to remain completely current. Of course I won’t be explicitly sacked for my age as the equality act makes that illegal …I’ll likely leave by mutual agreement with a pay off, but I want that to be only when I’m ready. I accept there might still be skinny jeans in primark, new look and river island but that’s not really my yardstick. Just checked net a porter and they are carrying very few pairs now and almost all of them are black so I think that’s decided me to cull all except a couple of black pairs. 20 pairs sounds a lot but it’s only accumulating a pair a year from the last twenty years.

Thanks for all the varied opinions!

I got rid of all my skinny jeans when we moved to this house in 2015, bar two pairs I kept “just in case” which this thread prompted me to chuck. They had never been worn since. Skinny jeans never really suited my pear shaped body.

I wear barrel leg, straight leg, mom, balloon leg. In winter I wear knee-high socks underneath, and DM boots, so no chilly gap. I’ve never been a fan of long boots though, and I do get how skinny jeans with riding type boots over works well in wet weather.

ChilliPB · 15/08/2022 09:04

I was going to say what @Judystilldreamsofhorses said about non-skinnies with winter boots. I’ve got a few pairs of mom/tapered/straight/barrel and wear them with DMs, chunky Chelsea boots, Grenson Nanettes, with long socks and it’s always nice and warm (and I’m in Scotland!) and I like how it looks. Just got those wondering how to style different shapes with winter boots.

Back to the OP, I would say keep yourself very favourite/premium jeans in case you might want them over winter/to go with a certain top or boots or if they come back in in the future. But the cheaper ones or the ones that are worn/you don’t love I’d ditch.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/08/2022 10:42

@ChilliPB i am also in Scotland! Footwear wise I also often wear leather trainers (Vejas, Adidas Stan Smith or Continental 80s) but mainly DM monkey boots (Church) which I have in both black and ox-blood. One of my favourite outfits last year was pale blue mom style Levi’s with a mustard mohair jumper and the ox-blood DMs. I am excited for autumn!
