Has anyone just disposed of all their skinny jeans?

I must have 20+ pairs hogging wardrobe space. I haven’t worn a pair since the start of the pandemic but I don’t know how much is dated style versus how much is they are not the obvious choice to sit at home in! The topshop ones have earned their keep but I’m falling into the trap of handwringing over more premium pairs that I’ve only worn a handful of times. I do have other denim but no shape I love as much as the skinny Jean and struggle with styling especially in winter when I’m not a fan of a chilly gap.

am I mad and deluded to hang on to them…help me take the plunge if so!

@Judystilldreamsofhorses hello! I have the vegan cherry red DMs and also wear them a lot with jeans and autumnal coloured chunky jumpers! Can’t wait til autumn - rainy and grey here so feel like it might not be too far off 😁

Wouldn't dream of it. I've had one pair since 1982! Also delighted that I didn't bin my late 80s mom jeans or my low waist boot cut that ive had since the early 90s. My jeans collection will be my pension!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 16/08/2022 09:31

As I started reading this thread, a couple of teenage girls walked past my house, wearing skinny jeans. Don't think they're going anywhere, I certainly wouldn't judge what jean style someone was wearing!

They suit me, I have a nice arse. Mom jeans look crap on me, and I hate that feeling of looser fabric around the upper thigh.

Daisy62 · 16/08/2022 11:40

I enjoy a nod to fashion, it makes me feel upbeat, so I’m hoping to find a non skinny pair that suits me. I have mom jeans but they’re currently too tight and although I like wearing them I know they don’t make me look great. I have two pairs of skinnies, will keep the black ones out for wellies and retire the blue ones which are in good condition and will come back around sooner or later.

PowerPack · 16/08/2022 11:42

I haven't worn them for a while, wide leg are much more flattering for me, but I do revert when it's wet out, to avoid soggy ankles.

Also I still don't know what shoes to wear with wide leg jeans in winter!

MaryLennoxsScowl · 16/08/2022 15:57

I like new shapes of jeans. There’s always something cool about them. I last bought skinnies (slimming, if not too tight) in about 2015 and mom jeans (make bums look curvy and great, show off slim ankles) in 2019 and they’re all worn out now and haven’t been replaced. Bought some high-waisted wide-legs (make legs look so long) in 2018 or so. Pleated tapered or barrel jeans (just look cool) in 2020, and wide-leg more basic blue early this year. I mostly wear either pair of wide-legs, a black barrel cropped pair, or a pale blue barrel pair nowadays. I know the rise is dropping but I’m not sure I fancy low-rise again - will see if they appeal to me! In winter I wear leather trainers with the wide-legs and watch the forecast to see how wet it’ll be and wear a dress or skirt or cropped barrel jeans with DM boots if it’s going to be pouring - wet hem seep is real!

dudsville · 16/08/2022 17:01

My proper skinny jeans are now gone. I used this find them comfortable but I just don't any more. I also used to wear a lot of straight legged cords. I have kept these as they are a good brand/good quality, years old and no sign of wear, and I do like the look even if it isn't how I want to dress right now. I love the wider legs currently, I perfer them to be tapered though as opposed to a square finish at the bottom, the barrel shape.

germsandcoffee · 16/08/2022 17:11

Absolutely not but I don't follow the masses I wear what I feel comfortable in.
And at 5 foot theres no way I'd wear mom jeans or flares or slouch fit ect as I'd resemble a teletubbie 🤣

Grumpybutfunny · 16/08/2022 17:18

I've braved it and chucked mine as they were looking worn. To be honest I'm leaning towards river islands for the bum sculpt straight and mum jeans as compromise stil fitted around the waist but loser on the leg

museumum · 16/08/2022 17:19

I didn’t wear mine all summer but tiday it’s pissing down and cold so I had skinnies and hiking socks and ankle boots on.
I can’t imagine having 20+ pairs though!! I have black and dark blue only.

xfgdhfgnhkk007 · 17/08/2022 19:20

I'm keeping mine! I still think they're the best jeans for winter, they look brilliant and slimming with jumpers, boots etc. Baggier styles only look good in summer, with coats and boots etc I feel like a shapeless bag lady!

ladygugu · 17/08/2022 20:17

They definitely still have a place in my wardrobe, although I haven't actually worn them in months. I think they're great for autumn/winter with boots.

The problem before was that they took over and seemed to be the only style of jeans a lot of people wore for years. I probably own about 12 pairs of jeans but they're a mix of straight, mom, bootcut, wide and skinny

Although one they're all high rise and they're no mission of me wearing the low rise which is coming back in fashion!

dontgobaconmyheart · 18/08/2022 06:45

Pretty much. It has absolutely nothing to do with mumsnet though and everythi g to do with the fact that I stopped wearing them regularly at least 2 years ago now, haven't reached for a pair in that time at least once and don't currently feel interested in wearing them either.

As with anything else I no longer wear for that length of time and can't envisage wearing anytime soon (unless there is a practical reason to keep it), then I pass it on to charity.

I do think they're flattering on me in theory, but much much prefer the jean shapes in fashion now and have moved away from the thought that something needs to enhance my figure to be worth wearing. Most days I wear a high rise slim straight leg. I'd feel very dated and odd in skinnies now I think and I don't think they go (or ever did go) with much tops wise or footwear wise anyway.

I love the way teenagers are referenced as a style barometer. As if every 15 year old is a style icon.

DangerouslyBored · 18/08/2022 08:19

Why would I ditch something that I look fabulous in? I have a great arse and good legs.
Skinnies are made for people like me. Also, I’m not a 15 yr old fashion victim who cares what other 15 yr old fashion victims think. Mum and boyfriend jeans look hideous on me. As they do most people 🤷🏻‍♀️

Anyway, if you are a desperate fashion victim, Vogue have stated that skinnies are NOT dated, they are classic. I’d trust Vogue more than someone’s over opinionated teenager.

DisforDarkChocolate · 18/08/2022 08:23

I was considering how I keep reading on here that skinnies are 'out' last week when I was sitting watching the world go by. All the jeans I saw were skinnies. Wear what you like, others obviously are.

Always happens on skinny hate threads. People referencing their teenagers’ irrelevant opinions. I mean who gives a fuck! Makes me chuckle.

As if any grown woman has ever looked at a 15 yr old and thought ‘hey, she’s so stylish, I wish I could dress like that’.

I don’t think the sneering suggestion that women who try other jeans styles are following teen fashion/are fashion victims/must look shit in boyfriend jeans is particularly helpful or pleasant.

Lots of people update and change what they wear - and enjoy trying different things. There are loads more jeans styles available now then there were a few years ago. Which is surely a good thing. Lots of the newer styles are flattering - or comfy! - or just fun to wear! - and a good break from skinny jeans which made up the overwhelming majority of jeans available for a long time.

Suggesting women who wear them probably look hideous and/or are ‘desperate fashion victims’ - come on!

I’ve got out some bootcut/straight that I put away 10-15 years ago and will put away the skinny ones.

Me too

I am also old enough to remember all the handwringing and angst when bootcut jeans were declared out and people saying they would never stop wearing them because they were the most flattering shape.

RunningSME · 18/08/2022 19:40

Well I’m in IT and lead a team of graduates and freshfaced programmers, there’s so many of them my department is nicknamed the creche, however I have never once had my physical appearance or dress sense hinder me in my career, it sounds like an incredibly toxic environment and if they’re offering you a payout to get out of there I would take it because frankly at the moment we are offering people between 10 and 15% pay rises to bloody well stay and if they are willing to wear clothes as well great.

Fizbosshoes · 18/08/2022 19:45

I am petite and I think I look better in skinny jeans, so I'm happy to be unfashionable because I think they suit me and it took me months to find some that fitted properly

Chipsahoy · 18/08/2022 20:12

You’ll have to prise my skinny jeans off my cold dead body.

Beefcurtains79 · 19/08/2022 08:06

Whenever I see people wearing them now I think that they look so uncomfortable! I much prefer a looser fit.

MerryChristmasToYou · 19/08/2022 09:21

If I have jeans I love, I hang on to them when the fashions change, and I'm glad I did. The 90s fashions are back now. I remember flares in the 1970s and can't see myself in them, or mom jeans. The parachute pants didn't suit me first time round. Skinny jeans suit me so I'll wear what I'm happy in. I have some nice bootcuts I'm looking forward to wearing again

MrsDThomas · 20/08/2022 07:05

I have fab legs and a great arse. So im wearing mine
