Trainers to a funeral?

Baycitystroller · 07/08/2022 19:59

I am going to a funeral this week. I have a black and green maxi dress to wear. I wear long dresses a lot! Usually with trainers or DM boots in winter. I can’t wear trainers to a funeral can I?? I don’t have any suitable shoes though.

any suggestions?

I was surprised at how casual some of the dress was at a funeral I went to recently. As long as the trainers are smart (and a dark colour preferably) I don't see a problem

IvorCutler · 07/08/2022 20:04

I wouldn’t! It doesn’t seem very respectful to me. Seriously, anything other than trainers or flip flops.

MacKenzieMcHale · 07/08/2022 20:10

God, wouldn't dream of wearing trainers to a funeral: the DMs would be better. Otherwise get a cheapy pair of shoes from Tesco or whatever.

Babdoc · 07/08/2022 20:15

You are going to the funeral to commend the soul of the departed to God, and to support the bereaved. What you have on your feet won’t influence that one way or the other!
I regularly attend church in jeans, hoodie and trainers. I am sure God doesn’t mind.

Cheap black sandals from a supermarket.

Ginger1982 · 07/08/2022 20:23

Do you not own a pair of ballet pumps or other slip on shoes?

bananaboats · 07/08/2022 20:26

I don't think trainers are appropriate no, could you not just buy something or maybe borrow something for the day? I went to a funeral recently and it was till pretty formal, would have stuck out like a sore thumb in a maxi dress and trainers.

DelphiniumBlue · 07/08/2022 20:27

I'd go with the DMs, unless you will be too hot in them You could buy something cheap in the sales, or better still, borrow.

Baycitystroller · 07/08/2022 20:28

DM loafers. That’s it. Ballet pumps would look weird. I assume I’ll have to wear tights.

I think unless you run with the 1% crowd then whatever clothing you have to hand is suitable to mourne in and buying something cheap for one wear is a waste.

SunshineLoving · 07/08/2022 20:33

No, you shouldn't wear trainers IMO.

The DMs will be smart and absolutely fine.

gogohmm · 07/08/2022 20:33

No, smart shoes or sandals are far more appropriate. Do check that green is ok - whilst patterns and colour are often worn these days some families would be horrified by a green dress (I organise funerals so see it all)

Baycitystroller · 07/08/2022 20:34

yes I want to avoid buying something. I have some black slip on trainers. Bit like Vans. They might work?

I think that would be fine

gotagooddeal · 07/08/2022 20:46

I've been to a few funeral and a lot of the people were dressed like they were going to Tesco. I think it's very disrespectful

Obviously the OP doesn't. It's not obligatory.

Baycitystroller · 07/08/2022 20:50

Personally I wouldn’t judge what people were wearing. However I know some people are sticklers for this stuff.

clothes are unimportant, your presence is.

BloodyCamping · 07/08/2022 20:52

I hope no one wears stiff black clothes and formal shoes to my funeral,

girlmom21 · 07/08/2022 20:53

Vans are fine I think.

Exactly.

Inclinedtochatter · 07/08/2022 20:58

My uncle passed away recently and I honestly couldn't tell you what anybody wore to his funeral. Wear what you have don't go out and buy anything new it really doesn't matter.

Earlymenopausesucks · 07/08/2022 21:02

What wrong with your DM loafters @Baycitystroller?
Do you know the family well? I know I would just be glad people had turned up to support me.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 07/08/2022 21:03

I wore burgundy Vans and a green dress to my DH’s funeral, it really isn’t about what you wear but the fact you are going to support the family of whoever has died. If someone had turned you in fancy dress, I couldn’t care less but cared that they had made an effort to come.

nomorespaghetti · 07/08/2022 21:05

I wore black and white checkered vans to my grandad’s funeral the other day. I was in a black jumpsuit and grey blazer, and none of my other shoes looked right. My grandad was very much a “make do and mend” type, so I thought he’d approve of me making do
