Talk to me about jeans

Thinking ahead to cooler weather I was looking online at jeans. For the last decade at least I've been wearing skinny jeans, but apparently they're on the way out and going to be a fashion faux pas. There's no bloody way I'm going back to bootcut. Mom jeans look ridiculous on me. Flared or wide leg equally make me want to shrivel up.

So, what the hell is this size 14, 41 year old with a bit of a mum tum and short legs meant to wear?!!

I know I can obviously carry on wearing skinnies and probably will but just wondering what other people are dabbling with.

OP posts:

So strange. Also 41, size 14 and been trawling the online shops tonight to work out exactly the same thing. No help but you may not be the only one still in skinny jeans this winter!

annabannan · 04/08/2022 22:47

Same, been looking slim jeans but my problem is leg length, plus because of my waist they tend not to be slim more like straight which is unflattering

QueenOfThorns · 05/08/2022 08:26

I’ll be in the skinnies with you too! I looked at all the current styles and despaired - I have long legs, but they all look awful on me. I’ve bought one pair of bootcut, but I struggle with what kind of top to wear with them - cropped tops are not happening at my age!

Maireas · 05/08/2022 08:28

Strangely, there seem to be plenty of skinnies in the shops still!
I'll be wearing mine still, so you won't be alone!

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 05/08/2022 08:31

M&S Eva jeans.
M&S have a good selection of jeans of all shapes and styles, but I love the Eva style. I wish they'd do them in more colours.

Bouledeneige · 05/08/2022 08:48

Sorry but I thought skinny jeans had been out for a long time. Well at least where I live. I like a more relaxed fit anyway.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 05/08/2022 09:08

M&S Harper jeans are somewhere between straight and relaxed - not always easy to find in store but always online.

FayCarew · 05/08/2022 09:10

Mom jeans are popular where I am, but they don't look good on anyone other than the young and slim IMO.
A few are wearing bootcut jeans. The M&S Eva ones are nice
Jeggings are still around.
I usually wear straight/slim as they suit my shape.

soupmaker · 05/08/2022 09:27

I've been back in straight leg for a couple of years. But I buy them long and turn them up. I'm a size 16, apple shaped, 50 year old.

grey12 · 05/08/2022 09:28

Straight leg? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I do the slip on jeans from Next. They're very comfortable!! 😊

MissDollyMix · 05/08/2022 09:34

I generally like the styling in the latest series of motherland- that encouraged me that us women in our 40s can wear jeans other than skinnies. On the other hand, I mostly get around it by just living in athleisure wear and wearing leggings…

BrassicaBabe · 06/08/2022 18:26

I REALLY want some flared jeans. But they all seem to be made for giants! I'm 5'7" so not short. But an inside leg of 34inches leaves MILES of fabric 🙄

SarahWoodruff · 07/08/2022 09:51

Gap have high waisted slim jeans which nod at the mom jeans trend while still being quite flattering (excuse my scruffy kitchen please). They're not as tight as skinny jeans but not super-bulky either. I think these were £20 in the sale.

Wear what suits you not what the MN fashionistas deem acceptable.

Fellow skinnies wearer here and proud 🤗

Enb76 · 07/08/2022 09:56

I hate to tell you this but unless you’re a skinny malinky under the age of 25 with a small body to leg ratio then you don’t look fab in skinny jeans either. Straight leg jeans look reasonable on most people you just need to get the waist height right depending on your shape. I’ve given up on jeans.

What's a skinny "malinky"? I'm well over 25 but look good in skinnies, which is fine by me - I don't need to aspire to fab 😉

Hermonthis · 07/08/2022 10:04

Everyone is wearing skinny bootcut jeans here but I’m too scared to make the switch.

I think the 90s bootcuts have traumatised me in some way but the modern ones aren’t the same and I’m trying to convince myself to at least try them on.

I know they’ll be comfortable and I know they’ll be flattering! I can’t pinpoint what’s stopping me 🤣

DeadRight · 07/08/2022 10:11

Jeans are such an issue now, it’s very confusing 😆

I’m holding on to my black skinnies for winter, as I know I’ll get wear out of them and I’m longing for some tall boots, so can’t see what other jeans style will work.

I got high rise, slim/straight blue jeans from Mango last year that I like, but can’t find any other jeans in that perfect fit (for me) anywhere and not sure if Mango will bring them back again for AW.

I finally embraced Mom jeans this year and got a pair I like from Gap, but I can’t see how they’ll work for colder weather and footwear. I don’t do chunky boots and roll ups. It looks pathetic on me. Hate loafers. Prefer more classic boot styles. So…clueless!

Proper straight jeans, boot cuts and flares all look really wrong in my shape. Might have to rely less on jeans as a staple going forward.

I think she means slinky maliki from the Hairy McLary and friends books. But it was Bitzer Maloney who was "all skinny and boney".

FlorianImogen · 07/08/2022 10:17

Wear what you like, what's the point in being uncomfortable?

Haha I was thinking exactly this!!

Hermonthis · 07/08/2022 10:18

Be off with you shoo 🤣

LadyOfTheCanyon · 07/08/2022 10:24

I've never really understood the appeal of bootcut - unless you have very slim thighs, all they do is highlight the thinnest part of your leg at the knee giving your leg silhouette a sort of hourglass appearance, which to my eye doesn't look flattering.

IllDoItButOnlyForTheAttention · 07/08/2022 10:27

To be fair, I've heard the phrase skinny malinky too. I think its from the Russian for "small".

I'm loving all of the wide and slouchy jeans around at the moment. I'm not as slim as I used to be, so I don't look amazing, but I'm comfortable, and it reminds me of my yoof 😊
