Hiking skirt

I'm looking for a skirt for hiking in (without shorts underneath). Obviously you can hike in any skirt but it would be great to fine one in that sort of waterproofish material that shorts are made of. I can't find one anywhere! Do they still exist? So much more practical than shorts.

I would check out decathlon. I've had one from them before (though was a couple of years ago)

Googling ‘hiking skirt’ brings up a few. This one from BAM?

I’m envious of your figure - you must be very slim and/or muscular; I’d have horrible chub run within the first mile if I wore a skirt without shorts underneath for hiking!

TheBikiniExpert · 04/08/2022 17:41

Thanks! I've tried Decathlon but they only had dresses - which were nice but not as practical.

Ha, ha I actually have quite chunky thighs but I still like skirts! That site looks great, thanks.

In what way is it more practical than shorts? Might help in searching

BellaLab · 04/08/2022 17:50

I bought a few from Alpine Trek

PurpleDaisies · 04/08/2022 17:54

Jack Wolfskin had them recently.

TheBikiniExpert · 04/08/2022 17:55

Thanks Bellalab. @NotMeNoNo I find it easier if you need a quick wee in the woods as you don't need to strip off completely! Also can be good to change under if you want to put a swimming costume on and jump into a river!

Thanks everyone! You're much better at finding them than I am!

You don’t need to strip off shorts to wee. You pull them down to your knees and then squat.

RealDeeBliss · 04/08/2022 18:02

Have you tried a shewee? Wouldn't be without mine, when I'm hiking, not if I'm off to the shops!

This is exactly why I wear them. There’s often beautiful lochs up the hills and it’s easier to change under a skirt after a swim. I have a few dresses too for summer walking and swimming ☺️

No, but it's on my list of things to try! Is it tricky to get the hang of?

Yes but I still feel less exposed in a skirt.

Try a Macabi skirt. I don't think I got out of mine when doing stages of the Camino de Santiago pre Covid. I found it great. Might work for you.

I used to have an amazing combat style with pockets but a skirt from Bench in the early 00s. I really miss that skirt. No idea if they still make them. Sorry not too helpful but I get what you mean.

Sheffieldissunny · 04/08/2022 20:07

I was thinking going over a style is tricky in a skirt but hadn't thought about the weeing issue. I normally try to hold on (which is probably not good)

glitterbugsparkles · 04/08/2022 20:37

Columbia had one last year which was really nice but I wanted shorts! Might get worth a shot. Was in Cotswold outdoors

RealDeeBliss · 04/08/2022 21:50

@TheBikiniExpert a couple of practice goes at home over the loo helps. There's a real sense of freedom when I know I've got it in my backpack!

StamppotAndGravy · 04/08/2022 22:35

I have a couple of synthetic jersey racer back skater dresses from h&m for hiking. They dry almost instantly, don't go clingy when wet and all the sun cream and mud wash off easily. I even swim in them if I can't be arsed to change! If you filter by fabrics, you'll probably get something similar on Asos.

In comparison with shorts they're massively better! They keep the rain off further down and it rolls off like an umbrella so you get less wet. They're easier than shorts in long grass or over styles because you can hitch then up and they don't get spikey bits caught in them. They stuff into waterproof trousers. You can easily pull leggings on or off underneath. They're a million times better for peeing. And best, you can go to a nicer restaurant or bar on the way home!

Skort from LLBean. I have two!

StarlightLady · 05/08/2022 04:39

Try Mountain Warehouse, although there ranges change regularly, so you have to see what’s on offer.

As for those saying “shorts”, the OP has specifically asked for a skirt, l don’t do shorts myself. If someone asks for directions to the British Museum you don’t tell them how to get to the V&A.
