I travel around by train quite a bit and get to see a lot of people whilst waiting about, from cafe's to platforms, etc. I always find it interesting how trends seem to change subtly, until they appear to be everywhere.

I currently live in a place where a good section of the town wear black tracksuits/hoodies/leggings, which seems perennial and never actually alters over the years or seasons, yet the rest seem to have gone from tighter clothing to rather loose fitting (trousers, jeans, dresses).

I am seeing a lot more mid to low rise, fitted tops, cargo style trousers around, at least between the midlands and north west. The floaty summer dresses are still going strong (Laura Ashley 80's style florals) but causal seems to be choice of the majority, I see far less office wear at train stations nowadays, so even workplace clothing seems to have softened.

The most stand out thing for me is the silhouette, it is like being 19 again - chunky sole lift trainers, boots, etc. Wide trousers and jeans with fitted tees and tops. I see a few crochet cardigan wraps on younger women, really reminiscent of the 90's, and beaded, ethnic accessories (elephant bags are in some of the shops in a few towns up here, as well as love beads, incense and embroidered stuff).

I kind of like it. It makes a nice change form the craze for the 'wealthy', conservative look that has dominated style interests for a good while. A bit less flash and more creativity. I hope it lasts!

Interesting idea for a thread. I think the main thing I've noticed is young people beginning to find their own style again. OK 'own style' is a bit of an exaggeration as a lot of it's straight out of the 90s but, after years of seeing girls and mums in identikit outfits with identical hair, I'm pleased to see it. Hopefully they'll get around to putting their own stamp on it soon.

And likewise, I'm seeing young women back in heels - not for everyday but for nights out. Admittedly this is based on whatsapp not real life, as these days I'm tucked up with a book while they're still on their predrinks. But that's what the photos are are telling me.

pastypirate · 26/07/2022 18:29

I think it's great that teenage girls arnt dressing to please men just now. Loads of baggy jeans and modestly. Teens look we did in the 90's it's great

balalake · 26/07/2022 18:42

I've noticed an increase in trainers or similar being worn with dresses, and as someone who despises heels and would never wear them, see that as a good thing.

I agree about the shift in girls/women not dressing the same. I don't have any desire to go back to some oh my 90s look

Divebar2021 · 26/07/2022 19:45

In London I’ve noticed quite a few younger women wearing patterned kick flairs… really quite leery prints ( zig zags and quite psychedelic colours ) - on occasions there were matching jackets. I’ve also noticed younger women revealing more cleavage than has been fashionable. On older women I haven’t noticed a dramatic shift as you might expect but fewer white trainers and more variety of colours.

Dominant · 26/07/2022 19:49

Lots of crops, focus on skinnyness and stomachs.
Loose clothes, comfort is king.
I think people give less fucks to how they look since lockdown, my observation is that people are doing and wearing what they like and still not shopping as much as before.

no make up make up, more realistic and natural looking 'enhancements', trend to smaller boobs and butts, less fake look, more gold jewellery.

Lots of vaguely orange young women with dyed blonde hair wearing 90s bootcut (often in a horrible beige colour) and crop tops.

Baggy jeans and big trainers on the emo-type youngsters - to me, a much nicer look than the above. I've also seen a few alternative looking girls wearing those big sari-fabric trousers, reminiscent of 90s grunge.

Fewer women wearing the 'big dress and white trainers' look now, but I haven't noticed anything in particular that seems to be replacing that.

EatDiamondsForBreakfast · 27/07/2022 09:40

@Sunfriedegg 😂absolutely golden comment love it

LunaTheCat · 27/07/2022 09:47

I live in Southern Hemisphere so no train stations to watch ... sounds fascinating.
I love people watching too.

NonNonWay · 27/07/2022 10:20

I see older teens in preppy style clothes. I'd say there is a slow shift in hair length and it's not all long and straight anyomore. Shackets, short boxy tops, lots of rings, like on each finger. I get the sense there is a bit more body positivity for all shapes. Artificial hair colour of choice is either blonde or pink.

Middle aged women, midi floaty dresses, comfy sandals or trainers, denim jacket, cool spectacles. Lots of black. Hair colour of choice is medium to dark brown.

Put better than I could. Agree.

threesortsofjam · 27/07/2022 12:01

Yes, not all long straight hairstyles. Shorter and wavy.

Agree with less office wear. Also noticed lots of cropped tops and baggier clothing. Also wedge, chunky-sole sandals, and still lots of the long flowing dresses and trainers uniform. Still see lots of Bretons at this time of year. A few dungarees in bright colours, but not many at all.

TheOGCCL · 27/07/2022 12:26

Up to 30ish: very fitted cropped tops with wide trousers and over shirts. Often in neutral shades, or matching. Bras optional. Not 100% clear who they are dressing for as the tops are pretty skimpy. All shapes and sizes and sometimes therefore quite a lot of flesh on display.

After 35ish: the patterned midi/maxi/midaxi dress with trainers and cross body bag. Denim or biker jacket. Suits most figures, doesn’t look too try hard, can be worn for every occasion but my God it’s a uniform. Flesh generally concealed. Jeans and a T-shirt much rarer these days, eg for a city day out.

Things that transcend the ages: DMs, false eyelashes (more or less subtle depending how old you are and how much money you’ve got), trainers (even when very hot fewer people are wearing sandals), athleisure (am I on the way to the shops or my yoga class).

I’m in London zone 1.

Also London Zone 1/2 and I'd absolutely agree with this. There is a lot of flesh on show at the moment.

Friffle · 27/07/2022 12:39

On young women it's the juxtaposition of oversized jeans and jackets with tops that show both stomach and cleavage.

Friffle · 27/07/2022 12:43

And not a new thing I know, but skinny jeans look more and more like something from another era.

threesortsofjam · 27/07/2022 12:46

Have I spotted a trend for shell suit jackets? ShockI've seen a couple. One woman yesterday was wearing combat trousers, crop top, and mint green shell suit jacket. I think she was late 30s/early 30s. It looked just fine! The other person was wearing pastel (beigy lilac) but I thought that was an anomaly and don't recall the rest of the outfit.

threesortsofjam · 27/07/2022 12:47

Late 20s/early 30s

mistermagpie · 27/07/2022 12:56

I'm 42 and quite scruffy, I'm jeans and t shirt most of the time. Most women my age seem to wear floral maxi dresses and white trainers with a denim jacket over the top like it's a uniform.

Younger women seem to go for cycling shorts or leggings with crop tops and a hoody or shirt over the top.

Work wise, I used to wear smart dresses and trousers with flats generally, but that died out with Covid and has never come back. I was in the office yesterday in jeans and a t shirt and so we're quite a lot of people (the ones not wearing maxi dresses and trainers).

Heels seem to look really dated now. I've got a hen night coming up and am wearing flats because when I tried the dress on with heels it just looked wrong somehow. You don't see young girls in heels much at all. My teenage neice wears dresses and trainers to go out.

The really hipstery hipster 20 something blokes are sporting mullets. I remember when the hipstery hipsters started growing beards and then 3 years later every Simon, Gary and Mark in the land had a beard. Will mullets also become mainstream again?

May the Lord protect us.

Yes! I work on campus at a uni and have noticed this. Some have the tache to go with it, together with double denim and batwing snow wash denim jackets.

Its a sort of Kevin in Corrie look circa 1986. It's not everywhere but definitely a growing trend.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/07/2022 13:19

Yes, seeing a lot of double denim. Hipster gals in hemp-like dresses topped with a big washed denim jacket.
