I travel around by train quite a bit and get to see a lot of people whilst waiting about, from cafe's to platforms, etc. I always find it interesting how trends seem to change subtly, until they appear to be everywhere.

I currently live in a place where a good section of the town wear black tracksuits/hoodies/leggings, which seems perennial and never actually alters over the years or seasons, yet the rest seem to have gone from tighter clothing to rather loose fitting (trousers, jeans, dresses).

I am seeing a lot more mid to low rise, fitted tops, cargo style trousers around, at least between the midlands and north west. The floaty summer dresses are still going strong (Laura Ashley 80's style florals) but causal seems to be choice of the majority, I see far less office wear at train stations nowadays, so even workplace clothing seems to have softened.

The most stand out thing for me is the silhouette, it is like being 19 again - chunky sole lift trainers, boots, etc. Wide trousers and jeans with fitted tees and tops. I see a few crochet cardigan wraps on younger women, really reminiscent of the 90's, and beaded, ethnic accessories (elephant bags are in some of the shops in a few towns up here, as well as love beads, incense and embroidered stuff).

I kind of like it. It makes a nice change form the craze for the 'wealthy', conservative look that has dominated style interests for a good while. A bit less flash and more creativity. I hope it lasts!

I am indeed wearing a crochet style cardigan 😁 totally accept it's 90s and have in a few colours. Love them.

Teens and early 20s are flares and the psychedelic patterned tops etc. I have a few of those myself...as someone who recenty turned 30, I find my wardrobe in a weird place between the ages. I generally wear what I lije and what suits my figure.

I saw a TikTok video from a Gen Z girl 'helping' millennials dress on trend. Baby doll tops from when I was 14...no thanks!

Its a sort of Kevin in Corrie look circa 1986.

Brilliant description 😂

SingingSands · 27/07/2022 17:31

I've started spotting teenage girls wearing those tight low hipster bootcut jeans that were all the rage in the 90s. Mostly worn with little halter neck tops or boob tube tops. Rather worryingly I've seen the return of the "pulled high thongs" appearing over the top of said jeans. I really hope that doesn't come back in, always thought it was a bit grim.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/07/2022 17:40

Yes, the shell suit has reappeared. My 16 year old dd had one from a vintage shop.

Much to my shame l spent the late 80’s/early 90’s designing endless numbers of these monstrosities. I remember seeing a flight come in from Florida at Manchester airport and everyone was dressed in shell suits. I just cringed.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/07/2022 17:40

Also mullets and Wolf cuts.

123Callie · 27/07/2022 17:41

On young women - no bras or soft bralets. 90s style crop tops and tight T-shirts but without the pushed up cleavage. It’s more of a yoga or dance aesthetic.

Friffle · 27/07/2022 17:43

Some have the tache to go with it, together with double denim and batwing snow wash denim jackets.

Goof for them looking for a punchy new (old) look. But omg! accompanying 'tache and batwing snow wash denim Grin Grin Grin

I’ve noticed less people (especially teens!) wearing a full face of makeup and it’s liberating.

I did smile the other day at seeing a group of teen girls wearing beige / cream cargo trousers and black shoes & baggy white t shirts….It was what the boys used to wear on non school uniform days in the 90s!

The really hipstery hipster 20 something blokes are sporting mullets. I remember when the hipstery hipsters started growing beards and then 3 years later every Simon, Gary and Mark in the land had a beard. Will mullets also become mainstream again?

May the Lord protect us.

DS (early 20s) had a mullet and a moustache for a while last year. It was hideous.
He now has a shoulder length wavy bob style.

upthem5 · 27/07/2022 17:46

I’ve also noticed more brunettes! Less people are having highlights, ombré, balayage etc

upthem5 · 27/07/2022 17:47

I saw a mullet today but I assumed it was a one off 😂😱

Oh no!

HelloSpringIveMissedYou · 27/07/2022 18:00

I saw a mullet the other day, I did a double take. Thought I'd been transported to Australia - dunno why but in my head I associate mullets with Australia 🤷‍♀️

SmellyWellyWoo · 27/07/2022 18:02

I went to a theme park yesterday and was amazed by the clothing diversity shown by the teens and 20 somethings. I usually just see road men and girls in crop tops and high waisted jogging bottoms.

pastypirate · 27/07/2022 18:03

I've seen a mullet today at a holiday park.

The trend I despise just now is the arse out bikini bottoms

EL8888 · 27/07/2022 18:15

@JoanThursday l think you have nailed the name of the mullet / moustache / stone washed denim trend, it is Kevin Corrie 86!

Tralahlah · 27/07/2022 18:20

In France I'm seeing wide leg jeans, baggies and combats on the ados and twenty somethings. Along with fitted (cropped) tops, decolté and a variety of shapes and sizes looking more original and natural. Takes me back to the 90s. The skinnies and straight hair look is fading fast and is mostly on the 30 plus ladies and those playing it "safe".

EternalPoinsettia · 27/07/2022 18:27

30-45 yr old women here still in floral dresses and trainers, defo a uniform. I can't bring myself to do it! Teens and young women still lots of mix of baggy joggers and some combats and hoodies but with the crop top look, yes noticed not so much push up/no bra too. Teens still looking Identikit here. All teen boys have that hair which is short sides and long on top, without fail

fyn · 27/07/2022 18:28

Also lots of mullets on teenage boys round us in the South West, made popular by Stranger Things I’m told!

actiongirl1978 · 27/07/2022 18:28

DC are at a private school and I was astounded at the end of term to see a good number of 6th form boys with proper mullets 😱

On own DC, cropped tops are massive. I never had the figure even if I wanted to.

I love how confident this generation of teens are with their clothing choices.

The mullet I saw today was at a private school at their gym! 😂

woodstocky · 27/07/2022 20:00

My DH has had a mullet for the past 18 months (he's early 30s) and we keep seeing them everywhere now!

Tanaqui · 27/07/2022 20:08

As well as the baggy trousers, white crop top; I've seen a lot of teens in short frilled skirts and white vests! Tops all seem to be white.

PedestalFan · 27/07/2022 22:20

I am especially happy for the coming back of the fitted tee, flare/wide jeans look!
