What trend changes have you noticed?

I travel around by train quite a bit and get to see a lot of people whilst waiting about, from cafe's to platforms, etc. I always find it interesting how trends seem to change subtly, until they appear to be everywhere.

I currently live in a place where a good section of the town wear black tracksuits/hoodies/leggings, which seems perennial and never actually alters over the years or seasons, yet the rest seem to have gone from tighter clothing to rather loose fitting (trousers, jeans, dresses).

I am seeing a lot more mid to low rise, fitted tops, cargo style trousers around, at least between the midlands and north west. The floaty summer dresses are still going strong (Laura Ashley 80's style florals) but causal seems to be choice of the majority, I see far less office wear at train stations nowadays, so even workplace clothing seems to have softened.

The most stand out thing for me is the silhouette, it is like being 19 again - chunky sole lift trainers, boots, etc. Wide trousers and jeans with fitted tees and tops. I see a few crochet cardigan wraps on younger women, really reminiscent of the 90's, and beaded, ethnic accessories (elephant bags are in some of the shops in a few towns up here, as well as love beads, incense and embroidered stuff).

I kind of like it. It makes a nice change form the craze for the 'wealthy', conservative look that has dominated style interests for a good while. A bit less flash and more creativity. I hope it lasts!

Contrary to the recession concept, I think there's been a fairly significant adoption of mini lengths in younger women. Shorter than short, as are the actual ......'booty' shorts!

I think demand will determine what sticks around, so loose fit will likely remain for a while, perhaps the shapes and patterns will change, with variations in necklines, colours, design. For those worried about the dresses disappearing, I don't think they will, but some may tell you they are dated, simply because once something reaches saturation point, people often become weary of it and (sadly) begin to associate it with status (or lack of). Society is a bit grim:(

I for one love the combats and looser styles. I suit slimmer fit tops so the silhouette is welcome here, I recall dressing like this until around 2006 when it all but vanished off the face of the earth.

What I would love to see is less emphasis on wealth and peacock feathers. For creative subcultures to spring forth once more. For the regular working people to define their own styles, without trying to imitate the 'establishment'. I am a bit of a bohemian at heart, and regardless of profession or background, I love to see self expression.
I also think the internet age has changed the way styles will circulate forever. The old phases of the past are gone, most likely!

I’ve seen short skirts, but they aren’t significant enough yet to be huge. They may just be a fad, especially if worn by the very young.

Dresses. Dungarees, Co-order, jumpsuits are all part of the same thing. Long strips of identical material. I think this is the next thing that will disappear. Jumpsuits have been round for about 15 years.

The most significant change I see generally is a move away from long straight hair, I see curly more, and most recently I see shortish much more, often wavy and that’s something I haven’t seen much for a quarter of a century.

This is in London and the near SW though. I also spend a lot of time in a smaller Northern city and hair is still long and done.

serenedream · 29/07/2022 00:37

I see a LOT more natural and curly hair too! It's a good thing, because I have missed it. Very long still seems to be the order of the day though.

A post on here last week of Imogen Poots in 'the father' had Dempsey&Makepeace hair (hers), I would like to see a return of more varied styles and lengths. When I was in my teens so many women had short, cropped, curly, straight, bobbed, crimped, braided, fringes and centre partings. There was so much more variation.
I think the super flat, glossed Hollywood/Kardashian trends ought have had their day.Grin

I keep seeing neutral coloured separates, sometimes worn as a co-ord set, in shades of beige/ putty, often the same shade as the wearer's skin, which makes me do a double take!

Also, lots of green suddenly. Bright grass green tops or trousers.

On young women it's the juxtaposition of oversized jeans and jackets with tops that show both stomach and cleavage.

This, definitely! Bonus points if you have a tan, fake or otherwise.

Also body con shorts and top combo in a pale colour (or maybe orange or blue) with fake tan. That look hasn't gone away at all.

Lots of midi skirts with slits up the side in various prints.

Yes, I see the same, looks like they're nude sometimes!

Agreed with the bright green. Was going to buy a bright green jacket but never found one I liked so settled for a bright pink one.

And not a new thing I know, but skinny jeans look more and more like something from another era.

Not in Scotland. They're still everywhere- I'm constantly thinking how did you even get those over your feet.

ZealAndArdour · 30/07/2022 09:42

I really appreciate the move away from skinny jeans. They look quite dated and unfashionable now.

Always preferred a wide leg, be that in a pair of tailored trousers or in jeans. Much more comfortable, airy and flattering.

Yes, “Bottega green” has been having a moment. My nail place even did a big social media post about getting a bottle of Bottega Green builder gel in stock for everyone’s summer manicures.

butisitreallyme · 30/07/2022 14:46

Thank you @ZealAndArdour , Bottega green it is! Just been down a google image rabbit hole. I did wonder where such a previously-unfashionable colour had suddenly sprung from.

dontgobaconmyheart · 30/07/2022 18:32

Interesting thread. I agree that at this point skinny jeans look a bit alien to me, despite the fact I used to wear them religiously and now only wear baggier styles or a straight leg.

I see a lot more colourful chunky trainers now in more retro shapes, never seem to see anyone wearing a belt or heels or carrying a proper handbag. Chunkier footwear in general, I rarely see a very flat delicate sandal on anyone young.

I do think the long dress and white trainers are on the way out or the preserve of the more mature (30+) and I say that as someone over 30.

Also I do look at the curled ombre and balayage type of hair styles and think they now look dated and very ubiquitous.

This is probably the first year I've felt old in the respect of going into shops and thinking there is no way I would wear that - usually 90's crop tops and stuff I had in secondary school in the very early 00's. Feeling very distressed that I'm almost certain low waisted things are back or about to be...
