What trend changes have you noticed?

I travel around by train quite a bit and get to see a lot of people whilst waiting about, from cafe's to platforms, etc. I always find it interesting how trends seem to change subtly, until they appear to be everywhere.

I currently live in a place where a good section of the town wear black tracksuits/hoodies/leggings, which seems perennial and never actually alters over the years or seasons, yet the rest seem to have gone from tighter clothing to rather loose fitting (trousers, jeans, dresses).

I am seeing a lot more mid to low rise, fitted tops, cargo style trousers around, at least between the midlands and north west. The floaty summer dresses are still going strong (Laura Ashley 80's style florals) but causal seems to be choice of the majority, I see far less office wear at train stations nowadays, so even workplace clothing seems to have softened.

The most stand out thing for me is the silhouette, it is like being 19 again - chunky sole lift trainers, boots, etc. Wide trousers and jeans with fitted tees and tops. I see a few crochet cardigan wraps on younger women, really reminiscent of the 90's, and beaded, ethnic accessories (elephant bags are in some of the shops in a few towns up here, as well as love beads, incense and embroidered stuff).

I kind of like it. It makes a nice change form the craze for the 'wealthy', conservative look that has dominated style interests for a good while. A bit less flash and more creativity. I hope it lasts!

London.

Seeing a lot of aggressively, almost cartoonishly 90s outfits on teenage girls right now. Lots of chokers and day-glo!

Also mullets and Wolf cuts.

Dh has recently had a 'wolf cut'
I'm not a fan

I bet the recession enables people to find their own look. The “good times” result in people following the herd and big trends. It all goes a bit toto when the country is hard up.

Bbq1 · 28/07/2022 00:56

Love the 90s look
I was a total 90s girl - boot cut jeans, chunky boots, Wonderbra with everything! My ds,16 is very individual and I love his look. I cannot cope with Mulletts though! They looked dreadful then so must still be dreadful now. Makes me think of Billy Ray Cyrus!! I'm glad to see a decrease in those hideous 'knicker shorts' this summer - shorts that have the wearer baring half of their bum to the world. Yuk

On a recent school trip, it was mesmerising to see all the different styles. From all the nude shades, to floral dresses and wrap skirts to those Shein ruched layer dresses to cropped white tees. Brilliant to observe!

Herbalteahippie · 28/07/2022 01:05

Aw mate, wish I could say the same… all I see is doughy faced obese girls in skimpy tops and thongs, and the few thin girls wear baggy stuff (I live in Weymouth) I feel weird after a while because don’t have fake lips and eyelashes, I know people can wear what they want but what’s with all the crop tops and beer guts?!! They were only for slim people before… but I guess times have changed… which is fine, I say go for it. I know it’s wrong, but body confidence has just become an excuse for badly fitting clothes 🙄

Herbalteahippie · 28/07/2022 01:07

My husband just got a mullet it’s HILARIOUS 😂

LadyWithLapdog · 28/07/2022 06:52

Short skirts with or without a frilly bottom, crocs, trainers with everything, mullets, baggy trousers, teeny tiny tops, wavy more natural looking hair.

serenedream · 28/07/2022 13:15

I am seeing amore relaxed fit on all ages, unless it's the yoga/leggings look, which is a fair variation. I am also seeing this across different social groups, just a looser fit in general.
I am happy to see the cargo trousers return, but NOT in high rise. Mid is fine. High rise seems to stand out now as weirdly matronly, like hoiking something too far up to the breasts. It only really works on a very long, slender torso.

Lots of vibrant coloured, wide dresses on older women, the most crazy levels of pattern I have seen in my life, I dare say it will tone down by autumn. I am admittedly tired of the midi length though, they all look like tents at this point.

I strongly doubt it has anything to do with recession or economics at this point. People who lead trends won't be as affected by rising costs as those who are struggling, and the struggling group seem to still wear black trackies and hoodies most of the time, or will have to make do with what the lower end high street offer.
I think we have come to the end of recycling previous decades. There won't be anything left to revert back to, soon. I think anything goes now, to some extent, but the over all silhouette is more relaxed.

I recall between 2009-2020 the obsession with looking 'groomed', glossy and conservative (aka rich) has been an obsession on here. The Parisian, designer, high end look. I always saw that as a sign of ageing and insecurity, political uncertainty and a preoccupation with status and money over creativity and the collective.
I am glad that stilted look has receded to be honest, at least with young people.

I also think the long patterned dresses with trianers are no so ubiquitous that the trend will be rejected soon. It may have hit peak visibility Grin

The weird and wonderful and anything-goes is my cup of tea! I love the academic boho kind of looks, outdoorsy combats, long sweeping wool coats over baggy trousers, chunky shoes and more individual, even handmade accessories look more refreshing and authentic over the somewhat boring, ubiquitous conformity of Mulberry bags and Hermes belts.

pastypirate · 28/07/2022 13:19

I now have silver glittery crocs I love them!

I agree! I do dislike it at all, and I've seen all ages from 70s/80s down to late 20s all wearing this look now.

I don't think it would suit me so I've never worn it.

DelphiniumBlue · 28/07/2022 14:50

I will be really sad when long patterned dresses with trainers become dated.
I have a wardrobe full of both, just so practical.
Am too old to wear thigh high or even shorter than knee length dresses now, too fat to wear anything clingy, and can't imagine wearing heels again.
And now I've found a supplier of dresses with pockets, there's no reason ever to wear trousers again!

Friffle · 28/07/2022 14:52

I think longer length dresses will be around for a while yet, and they've been popular in summer for aeons. It's just such a wearable look for so many people.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/07/2022 14:53

I used to teach history of fashion. Hemlines tend to drop in a recession. I think they’ll still be around for a while yet😭

How interesting, do you know why?

durellh · 28/07/2022 17:19

longer dresses will always be around in summer. It's practical don't have to worry about tan, hair etc

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/07/2022 17:54

It’s quite well known and has been proved. Skirt lengths tend to lead the economy by about 3 years. I see no mini skirts anywhere at the moment. In general fashion l
mean. So no end to economic turbulence
at the moment, as long skirts are still hanging round.

DD went to Pheobe Bridgers on Sunday. Everyone had on full length maxi skirts.

and if you're fair skinned they're great for stopping you from getting sunburnt as well as for creating a nice breezy situation when you walk.

durellh · 28/07/2022 18:00

true

Riverlee · 28/07/2022 18:10

Saw someone wearing a crochet top this today. Very 70s.

Went to an evening do recently, and was surprised how many heels on show (average age 40-60). Not sure I saw anyone wearing trainers, although they may have been replaced by sandals.

All the teen girls had ‘tube’ dresses - not sure what they’re called.

What trend changes have you noticed?

My daughter (14) crocheted her own version of this and my son's girlfriend (who is 18) goes to a 'yarn club' every week where they're all crocheting their own clothes. Going by what my kids are wearing, the 90's/Grunge look is back and they're all wearing baggy jeans with cropped tops and they would rather shop second hand from charity shops than buy new.

I'm up north though, so probably not the centre of fashion.

MrsPlumbhouse · 28/07/2022 18:52

As well as for creating a nice breezy situation when you walk.

I love 'creating a nice breezy situation when you walk'. 😁So true, nicely put.

rumplestiltskinp · 28/07/2022 19:08

Yes, it's all pristine leggings and jumpers in a semi-sportswear look. I like it, which is why I've worn this look my whole life. I like it when my style comes into fashion because I can stock up on stuff cheaply. I'm loving the matching jumpsuit style jogging sets. Makeup-wise I'm glad the drag queen look is fading out. For me I focus on what keeps the face looking young, so fluffy brows and applying upwards.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 28/07/2022 19:19

Delighted that combats have returned! I used to wear them all the time and I remember they literally disappeared from the shops overnight and I was gutted! Agree with pp not high rise though, combats need to be mid rise or low rise.

ballroompink · 28/07/2022 20:55

The teen girls where I live are all in either baggy/flared 90s jeans with cropped tops/bra tops or those grim flesh coloured ribbed flared trousers with very visible underwear. Lots of braless looks. I can't get over the extremely visible pants and thongs under flimsy skirts/trousers/leggings. Also a lot of cycling shorts with oversized t-shirts or sweatshirts like Princess Di in the early 90s 🤣

With school mums it's the ubiquitous floral midi/maxi dress with trainers or sandals look. Or activewear, still.
