Best carry-on bag + handbag combo for long haul?

RoundaboutRacer · 26/06/2022 22:02

Just that really.

Haven't flown long haul for years for obvious reasons.

So my allowance on our next big holiday is 2x23kg cases + cabin bag + handbag each.

I looooove buying bags so please hit me with your favourites for long haul carry ons.

Also if you're a packing geek like me please tell me what you pack in them. 😊 Who knew flying long haul would seem so exciting again. 😂

I'm only going short haul, hand luggage only.

Using a Nordace Siena backpack as my cabin case, but struggling to find the right handbag - I really want some kind of slouchy, backpack/tote/shoulder bag convertible, but not found anything that fits the bill yet.

Ylvamoon · 26/06/2022 23:57

🤷🏻‍♀️ not the answer you are looking for, but I just use my 30l hiking backpack Moab Jam by Jack Wolfskin
Fits under the seat and holds all essential & emergency items. Proofen on both, long haul & budget ...

heavyistheheed · 27/06/2022 00:02

I use a tote for my handbag for long haul flights. Kindle, earphones, phone, small plastic bag of liquids, travel purse, snacks and books I've bought last min from WHSmith all for perfectly in it!

Chocolatecoatedkettlebell · 27/06/2022 09:50

I’m not answering your question but if you really are a packing geek and you haven’t already discovered them, you need packing cubes

BlueBlueCowWondering · 27/06/2022 09:56

You might have that allowance in theory but do you really want to check suitcases right now?

much better this year to only take cabin bags and save the suitcase shopping for next year.

RandomQuest · 27/06/2022 10:01

I have a samsonite carry on that I’m ver pleased with, it’s soft not hard shell so you stuff it, there’s expandable extra zip so it can compress for stingy airlines and it has a pocket to hold a mobile charging pack with path to feed the wire out so you can easily charge your phone whilst hanging around the airport. Then I have a longchamp large pillage tote for everything i want nearby in flight. It sits nicely on top of the case for going through the airport too.

Ah not a chance will cabin bag be enough so we'll be risking the hold for sure.

But I'll do the standard spare outfit in cabin bag and will divide our stuff evenly between the hood luggage.

RoundaboutRacer · 27/06/2022 10:05

And yes I'm all about packing cubes!! Grin

I have plenty of bags I could use already but it's an excuse to look at new ones. Heehee.

I was thinking of maybe getting a Le Pliage large tote as the cabin bag and using my Le Pliage backpack as the handbag. Could work.

But then also they're very vacuous so maybe something with more sections could work.

One of these would work for cabin bag and they come with a little bag which fits a wallet passport etc too. Depending on your hold luggage the back slip pocket might fit over the handle. The quality is really good mine is going on for 4 years. miatui.com/collections/travel-bags

greyinganddecaying · 27/06/2022 11:12

Yes Mia tui is good for compartments/internal pockets.

CMOTDibbler · 27/06/2022 11:15

I'm currently loving my Mia Tui Jennie as my cabin bag 4 trips in. So many pockets, nice one on the outside for passport, insulated internal pocket for water bottle, clip for keys so they are tucked away and safe, came with a small handbag and clear organiser. I can also get my laptop, kindle, cables, a small washbag and 2 days clothes in it if necessary

GoingBacktoSchool123 · 28/06/2022 00:13

Goyard tote which doubles as a beach bag plus Rimowa cabin case always works for me.

Yup. Love my Jennie. Got for Xmas as part of a bundle, so came with even more packing cubes😃

70kid · 03/07/2022 23:31

Mia tui bags The large Jenny is perfect for travelling within

all the bags have this pocket on the back of all the bags that you can slide the suitcase handle through so the bag sits neatly on top of your suitcase and doesn’t move around

slipperyeel · 04/07/2022 08:45

I love the convertible Fjällräven high coast tote bag which is great for hand luggage and day trips.

On work trips I always used a knomo tote, fantastic amount of pockets for going through security etc but I probably wouldn’t use it on my hols.

Is it a theft-proof one?

looking for one for a US trip that can be our plane bag and use for New York, Disney etc…

HundredMilesAnHour · 04/07/2022 22:39

I use this Smythson bag as a carry-on:

www.smythson.com/uk/black-48-hour-travel-bag-in-ludlow-1029347.html?cgid=223

If I'm flying long haul and away for a while, it fits nicely on top of my Rimowa wheelie case.

Or if I'm checking a bag / flying short haul, I use the travel bag on it's own and/or with a matching backpack:

www.smythson.com/uk/black-zip-around-backpack-in-panama-1027759.html?cgid=223

And yes, I have a slight addiction to Smythson for travel bags. 😛

AngeloMysterioso · 04/07/2022 22:58

Was going to suggest a Le Pliage tote, but actually our changing bag is a Mia Tui Jennie and it’s pretty awesome… you have to choose your colour carefully though as it’s fake “vegan” leather so if you get the wrong colour it’s really obvious and can look quite cheap.

JolieJ · 04/07/2022 23:03

For travelling I use a smaller tote and then my eastpack backpack and if needed my small fabric eastpack carryon wheely bag.

greyinganddecaying · 04/07/2022 23:06

I've just bought the Seasalt idless bag https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/colourful-canvas-carry-bag

If it's ok, I'm going to use it as my "personal item" when I fly

The last thing I need is another bag @greyinganddecaying but that sea salt bag is a bargain in the sale, I’ve ordered the Green.
Looks like a good option for cabin luggage and as a beach bag.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 05/07/2022 10:48

Again not what you want to hear probably but I use a tote as carry on. I have a knackered old Neverfull which doubles as a beach bag. Its indestructible and has the advantage that I can see everything I need in it at a glance. Fits under the seat in front. I have an organiser for it although I don't often use it but they have their place if you like everything tucked away yet accessible.
Deep, dark bags that you have to rummage about in to find anything are absolutely enraging. That Seasalt one is giving me the rage just looking at it! ( the green is a lovely colour though)
