Can you wear black shoes with a white dress?

I have an event to attend to next week. I ordered a dress online but I don't think it's going to be delivered to me on time. It's my own fault for not ordering on time and the shop I bought from has a 6 to 8 day delivery policy. 6 days will be next Friday. It may or may not come.

I was lucky enough to get a few hours free and I hit the shops. I did find a dress and I tried it on and I like it. Its a white dress. I bought it. I will hand wash it later and iron it during the week.

Just wondering can you wear black shoes with a white dress? The dress is knee length. The shoes are as good as flat because I can't wear heels.

Or would this be a case for fashion police?

I do hope to add a pop of colour through a scarf but I won't be able to match my shoes to a scarf. It's just not going to happen.

I do have a pair of silver runners. Would they work with the dress for a casual dress.

The event would be smart casual.

If avoid black if possible. Metallics are good or tan.

Hurstlandshome · 26/06/2022 17:29

Out of interest, why are you washing the dress before wearing? Is this a thing?

ExHProblem · 26/06/2022 17:29

It can work in some cases. Do you have a pic of the dress and the shoes?

Yorkshireteabags · 26/06/2022 17:30

I personaly hate this. But each to its own.

Missing point of thread too, but feel compelled to also ask this!
ps go for a neutral colour rather than black if possible

LeafHunter · 26/06/2022 17:35

I wouldn’t, but I don’t think black shoes suit anyone unless they’re worn with black trousers so I may be biased!

ODFOx · 26/06/2022 17:36

How chunky are the black shoes? it's easier to pull off a formal white dress with Docs than black ballerina flats, for example.

MargheritaAndMargaritaPlease · 26/06/2022 17:43

Think it depends on the dress and the shoes! Sorry, that's really unhelpful.

I do think tan or metallic looks nicer with white though

SummersBreeze · 26/06/2022 17:58

This is what I have.

Come to think of it, I have some brown shoes too in a different style. I will give them a clean during the week.

What's the event OP? Those shoes are very casual. I wouldn't wear them together personally however I also wouldn't really notice someone else wearing that combo or bat an eyelid unless it was at say, a wedding, in which case I'd think the whole ensemble too casual.

If it's a gig or something it's fine. But maybe the silver trainers would look better?

FirstFallopians · 26/06/2022 18:13

What’s the event?

That dress looks very casual- if it was for anything more formal than say a friends lunch, I’d rummage through my wardrobe for something else tbh.

Yodaisawally · 26/06/2022 18:15

Not those shoes!

Definitely isn't a wedding. I would never dream of wesring white to a wedding unless it was me getting married.

The event is a christening in a church followed by a buffet style lunch in a home.

If it was a wedding I would be more prepared. I'm waiting on a delivery of a different dress so maybe it might come in time but I don't think it will.

I need to work with what I have now.

I will browse online for shoes or maybe even a different dress.

It's not those shoes I have. I have a different brand. They are black leather but it's that style shoe.

Really dislike those shoes but the dress is nice.

Would look lovely with tan flat sandals eg Saltwater ones. M&S is a good place to check as they tend to deliver next day to store.

rosesarepinkvioletsarepurple · 26/06/2022 18:23

Can't you wear some sandals? Pretty much any sandal would be better than black or brown shoes with that dress

I like sandals but I don't want to wear sandals due to having 2 ingrown toenails on my big toes. So I prefer to hide them in shoes with closed toes.

What about closed-toe espadrilles with a small wedge?

That would absolutely work if I find a pair to be delivered in time. I will do a search online now. I'm not a huge fan of heels or a wedge or anything with a height but it would work.

What about some ballet pumps if you need flats and don't like wearing sandals? You need something lighter with that dress I think and with it being a christening. Accessorise do those twisty butterfly pumps that are really soft - maybe they do fast delivery? But if not Amazon do loads like these on next day or two day delivery.

Yes that's the kind of thing I was thinking. Goes perfectly with the dress, is summery and stylish
