How did she get these arms?

These pics are from my old fitness inspiration folder - from a few yrs ago. I just like her arms (so cropped everything else off!). They don't look muscular but not large/scrawny either.

Is this possible to replicate to any extent at all? I am a similar build but 44, and my upper arms are very loose and flabby. Is it possible to tone to get this, or would that bulk them up? I don't need to lose weight, so don't wish to achieve it that way i don't think. Any tips?
I think more muscular arms are preferred on MN but i would love mine to be this slim and smooth. It's prob just genetic isn't it?

They wouldn’t be my inspiration! I don’t think they look toned at all. So I’d say you could get arms like that just by restricting calories and carrying on with normal day to day activity.

Watchkeys · 24/06/2022 17:08

You say you don't need to lose weight, but that your arms are flabby, so it's quite hard to tell what's going on for you.

The person in the photo does have some muscle tone, and not very much fat on her arms. You wouldn't have to be overweight for this muscle tone to be buried under a layer of fat.

Do you know what body fat percentage you are?

mellatronella · 24/06/2022 17:13

Don't know my fat percentage, i am just maybe a slightly bigger build - and we cant choose where we lay on fat, I don't think?
I just wondered if it was possible in some way to get something similar from yoga or other exercise. Her arms aren't toned as such but I do like the smoothness of them. Mine are a bit bumpy and thicker.

I am 5'5 and 8'7 st.

They look young arms, naturally toned and slim from youth!
I don’t think a woman in her 40’s can replicate a young body and I don’t mean that unkindly.
I’m 46 and over the last couple of years I have developed knee wrinkles and my bum/thigh flesh is softer and a bit saggier.
Ageing is shit.

Watchkeys · 24/06/2022 17:15

Build some muscle, OP.

ForBestResults · 24/06/2022 17:15

She's young, a "normal" weight and possibly does some light cardio. My arms are basically that shape, but the skin is far less elastic and no amount of exercise is going to change that.

Octomore · 24/06/2022 17:15

Agreed, those arms aren't particularly toned they are just young and slim. Yoga isn't going to lead to having those arms.

99ProblemsButAFartAintOne · 24/06/2022 17:16

Arm transplant?

Fairislefandango · 24/06/2022 17:16

They just look like the normal arms of a slim person who hasn't necessarily done anything at all to make them like that! Genetic, I think.

daysfilledwithdappledlight · 24/06/2022 17:17

Genes definitely come into play!

She looks like she has naturally slim arms as minimal muscle definition. If you look at actresses in their 50's like Jennifer Anniston you can see that they're only slim because of a huge amount of time and training goes into maintaining that physique.

mellatronella · 24/06/2022 17:18

I have some new knee formations too Grin, they're bony but now with a bit of a slouch.

I didn't have arms like that at 20 though! I dropped a lot of weight back then from stress and mine were just gnarly/ill looking. perhaps it's her skin tone that helps them look smooth.

Exercise doesn't give us youth OP.
But reformer Pilates does help give smooth toned arms.

mellatronella · 24/06/2022 17:20

Thanks everyone, I had a suspicion it was genetic. Will persevere with my dumbbells.

lol at transplant Grin
Any donors?

Try Ashtanga yoga

Imabouttoexplode · 24/06/2022 17:25

Well, smooth is exfoliation/body brushing/acid toner moisturiser done religiously.

Then lose a bit of weight, although you're already super light, so probably not relevant for you.

And exercise. Weights and reformer Pilates.

Oh and a time machine to take you back to your youth!

Shitscared123 · 24/06/2022 17:29

I’m slim mid-49s, and my arms look like that. I do a lot of hot yoga (hardcore stuff), and that’s kept me in shape. However, I don’t put on weight easily.

Floisme · 24/06/2022 17:29

I just wear sleeves.

Shitscared123 · 24/06/2022 17:30

*mid-40s

mellatronella · 24/06/2022 17:31

Just searched ashtanga yoga and found a vid for beginners that looks insane! I wish they'd appreciate that a beginner could NOT do any of those moves at all!

That said it looks wonderful.

Is it possible to do some light pilates on a mat at home? Classes here have not reopened yet Sad
Any vid recommendations welcome!

I like your way of thinking!

my arms used to be similar, I'm tall though with lanky arms & legs, find it hard to build muscle.

Lots of people won't have that shape regardless of how much they diet/work out. I will never have a bubble butt.

Sofasogood1 · 24/06/2022 17:40

I have extremely baggy saggy upper arms after big weight loss. No amount of arm exercises help the appearance sadly thou I can feel the muscle!! If your skin has stretched op you probably can't replicate even with extreme weight loss

I disagree. I've been doing yoga consistently for ten years. My arms look like the photo and I'm 51.

Fair enough (yoga is great!), but genes don't count for nothing. Your arms might look like that after years of yoga, but that doesn't mean everyone's would.

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/06/2022 17:49

She's just naturally young and slim.

Do something like yoga to tone up. Your arms may or may not ever be that slender, depending on your build, but toned arms will look better than not.

Also time to learn not to covet other people's body types, it is not a road to happiness..
