How did she get these arms?

These pics are from my old fitness inspiration folder - from a few yrs ago. I just like her arms (so cropped everything else off!). They don't look muscular but not large/scrawny either.

Is this possible to replicate to any extent at all? I am a similar build but 44, and my upper arms are very loose and flabby. Is it possible to tone to get this, or would that bulk them up? I don't need to lose weight, so don't wish to achieve it that way i don't think. Any tips?
I think more muscular arms are preferred on MN but i would love mine to be this slim and smooth. It's prob just genetic isn't it?

Thanks people! I am a small build, so possibly just a different shape/store fat differently. And also possibly age, but I have seen a few women my age with arms like this.

So these are most likely yoga-type arms?

Probably luck. And youth.
I had anorexia in my late teens/early 20s and had very skinny arms...but since recovery they've always felt slightly chubby (although I've never been overweight)

dearhummingbirds · 24/06/2022 18:03

I’m the same height and pretty much the same weight as you, OP and I’m 31. I’ve not got slim arms. I’ve also got bigger legs and a bigger bum than most people of my weight. It’s just my build and there’s not too much I can do to help fix it!

whenwillthemadnessend · 24/06/2022 18:06

That girl is definitely young. I swim a lot and all the older lady's that are slim are still a bit loose if you know what I mean. You just loose tone as you age.

meloncolic · 24/06/2022 18:10

Don’t start ashtanga in your 40s if you’ve never done yoga before! Chance of injury is extremely high.

yoga and Pilates with katja on YouTube is safe and good, also yoga with Adrienne.

mellatronella · 24/06/2022 18:10

My legs look a bit better after body brushing, will try my arms!

It's crazy how different we all are though. I always gain weight on the hips but waist stays small. Boobs go too, sadly.

By 'older ladies' are we talking over 40? Or older?

Try bodypump OP.. works a treat for arms and shoulders.

lightisnotwhite · 24/06/2022 18:18

I did Gillian Michaels30 days shred for a year starting in September Literally everyone the in the following summer complimented my toned arms. I was 48.

Fenella123 · 24/06/2022 18:21

Women can't bulk up, hormones are wrong for that. I've been going to gyms and weight training for 25 years or more and I have NEVER seen a woman where I thought she looked so bulky and muscular that it looked weird. I HAVE seen quite a few women who were just lean and trim looking picking up weights I wouldn't dare to go near, so clearly they are pretty strong and yet not bulging like Arnold.

mellatronella · 24/06/2022 18:33

tbh this (pic) would scare the shit out of me as a menstruating woman, but it's very popular it seems, so I am presuming it's safe if you know your stuff.

I will probably opt for yoga/pilates Grin

Will check out gillian M, thanks!

I think that's just youth and genes, OP. My arms are very similar to that: I'm in my early 50s, and only of the past couple of years have they started to be a little bit more saggy between shoulder and elbow. I've always had slim arms: no matter how much weight I put on, my arms remain the same same. All my weight goes on my boobs, stomach hips and thighs.

DrPayne · 24/06/2022 18:39

She looks in her twenties and hasn't had huge weightloss just been average or slim all her life and young so naturally skin is tight without trying. You might need lipo and an arm lift if this is your inspiration.

Summerlovin20 · 24/06/2022 18:43

It also helps if you haven’t gained or lost weight throughout your adult life, skin doesn’t like stretching and shrinking multiple times, after a certain age skin doesn’t ping back like it did when you were 20 and dropped a stone in 3 weeks.
I wouldn’t say over 40 is older as such, it’s middle age and we should expect and accept that our bodies will change.

AmISpeakingAnotherLanguage · 24/06/2022 19:03

I have a feeling it’s also partly down to the photo - I have amazing arms on my selfies. Not so much in real life 🤣

vitahelp · 24/06/2022 19:36

I hope I don’t sound arrogant but my arms look a lot like that (I’m 35). I do exercise every night (alternate running/HIIT/yoga) and eat healthy (veggie). But to be honest I think my arms just look like that naturally, my Mum has similar arms and doesn’t work out.
Sadly my stomach is another story and I look 3 months pregnant no matter what I do 😂

mellatronella · 24/06/2022 20:09

@vitahelp Not arrogant at all, I wish we could all compliment ourselves more !

HelenHywater · 24/06/2022 20:15

Her arms aren't muscular. I do ashtanga yoga and have more muscular arms than that.

She's just very slim and young I think. Muscular looks better imo - that isn't my inspiration either but given you're 44 and slim probably you're better aiming for muscular too.

JMAngel1 · 24/06/2022 20:40

I don't think they're that toned tbh.
Over the last year I've really toned up my arms doing pilates with Bailey Brown on YT. I'm 50 and they had started to look a bit bulky. Now they very toned - I have lines up the sides and keep the skin smooth with lactic acid body cream every day. I just use 1-2kg weights - anymore than that and I look too bulky.

Littleguggi · 24/06/2022 20:46

I'm mid 30s and have always had arms like that. Hated them when I was younger. I'm not particularly slim anywhere else so they must be genes, just the way I was built I guess!

ramonaquimby · 24/06/2022 20:50

Swimming and yoga. I’m 52 and have arms more toned than your pictures

DayOfTheTripods · 24/06/2022 20:53

I think that my arms are fairly similar to that and I’m 50 and don’t do any arm toning exercise. I have really flabby legs with little muscle definition despite running three times a week though. I’ve accepted that it’s just genetics basically!

Penguintears · 24/06/2022 20:58

I'm 44 and my arms look like that. I've never been more than one stone overweight (after kids) and naturally athletic build. But yoga has toned my arms better than anything. Have a look at Sarah Beth yoga on YouTube. Very accessible and no waffle like Adrienne (I have an impatient personality!).

DotBall · 24/06/2022 20:58

I have arms like that at 55 although I’m a bit shorter/heavier than you. I run and ride horses so general fitness has kept them slim, but I’m also fine-boned so my arms have always been like this.

HeavyHeidi · 24/06/2022 21:01

My arms are great, because I lift weights. They are quite impressive when I flex the muscles, but just toned and shapely otherwise. So lift weights - it's really really hard for women to accidentally build massive bulky muscles, so no need to be afraid.
