How did she get these arms?

These pics are from my old fitness inspiration folder - from a few yrs ago. I just like her arms (so cropped everything else off!). They don't look muscular but not large/scrawny either.

Is this possible to replicate to any extent at all? I am a similar build but 44, and my upper arms are very loose and flabby. Is it possible to tone to get this, or would that bulk them up? I don't need to lose weight, so don't wish to achieve it that way i don't think. Any tips?
I think more muscular arms are preferred on MN but i would love mine to be this slim and smooth. It's prob just genetic isn't it?

Sarah Beth looks like a good watch, I have saved her to my youtube fitness folder. I have also recently begun using 1kg weights, too! Thanks everyone, some great tips. I will go for a decently toned version of my own arms:)

She has arms like my 15 year old DD. Eats like a horse, does no exercise bar the walk to and from school and is model tall (5'9).

HalfBrick · 24/06/2022 21:06

They don't look toned. To answer your question - youth. I had amazing arms aged 20-28.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 24/06/2022 21:06

They look like my arms? Hadn't occurred to me they'd be in any way aspirational. Personally, I'd like to build some muscle.

MadKittenWoman · 24/06/2022 21:13

I'm 60 and have toned arms from doing BodyPump, body conditioning, pilates and Zumba. I'm also vegetarian.

SarahAndQuack · 24/06/2022 21:57

I agree she looks young and slim. I am a bit overweight (size 14; BMI 26), and my arms are not a million miles off that - they are larger above the elbow, but not flabby. I'm 37. I've recently started to work part-time in a physical job where I do a lot of lifting or pulling heavy, but not ridiculously heavy, objects. It only took weeks for my arms to shape up. So I would imagine you could quite easily achieve this look with exercise.

FWIW, my female colleagues who are between 40 and 65 all have lovely toned arms, much more like this picture than mine are. One of them only works six hours in a week (she's retired), and that's an easy amount of exercise spread over a week.

Grapewrath · 24/06/2022 22:08

I’m 43, my arms look like this. I’m slim but I don’t work out loads, but I do lift weights once a week.
This is not a brag by the way- the rest of my body is NOT anything to aspire to

Lovinglife45 · 24/06/2022 22:19

Arms like this compliment strappy summer dresses.

I am a size 10 and feel my arms are a tad too big. Whilst they are toned well, according to my friends I would prefer them to be as slender as in this photograph.

I am making a point of not buying thin strapped dresses going forward as I instantly feel frumpy and mumsy in them. Thankfully I gravitate towards long sleeve dresses even in summer- they are far more flattering on me.

Lickerz · 24/06/2022 22:33

You have to do weight training to get slim toned arms. You won't bulk up, women don't have the hormones.

CaptainTroy · 24/06/2022 22:35

They’re young and slim. Bodies change as they get older.

Lochjeda · 24/06/2022 22:39

I'm 36 and my arms are like that, I'm 5"9 with long limbs and don't work out I think its just genetics and height I defo don't think they are really toned arms just slim.

mellatronella · 24/06/2022 22:48

I have definitely seen women that are very, very defined, of not bulked up. The pic i posted earlier of the hip thrust...she does look pretty strong and built!

Some yoga vids the person's arms look quite skinny, so not too fond of that (as I get older I don't want the Madonna look! No offence to her, I am assuming her arms are intentional).

True about strappy dresses, I always struggle with them as prefer to wear a bra, but they do suit me even though I don't have my dream arms, lol. I think most people look good in strappy tops in summer, though, whatever their body type.

I don't see any of these comments as bragging, they are informative and interesting. It's a shame we have to worry about appearing boastful so we have to make a disclaimer Sad Enjoy your arms ladies!

tbh this (pic) would scare the shit out of me as a menstruating woman

how strange?

BigButtons · 25/06/2022 05:29

I weight train. I am 54. My arms are still very slim and I don’t think look at all bulky but nothing wobbles and they are very toned.

Tunus · 25/06/2022 06:24

To me her arms just look thin and not toned. Mine used to look like that, then I had more babies, put on weight and got older.

Spindeluna · 25/06/2022 07:08

Totally genetics. Mine used to look that in my 20s. Now after an extra stone in weight and 2 extra decades of age they look like this - a bit bigger but still reasonably slender. (Not toned - I've never done weights.)

BUT I carry almost all my weight from the hips down. I've literally never been able to buy knee high boots because I either can't get them on over my chunky calves, or if I can get them on I can't do them up. I can't wear skinny jeans because if I try on a size that would fit my waist, I can't pull them up past my knees. I often can't buy cropped trousers because the cropped part is too tight and digs into my lower calf. This is the same whether I'm at my lower weight or a higher one - I've at various times been a stone heavier and a stone lighter than I am now - and no matter how much weight-bearing exercise I've done.

So yep - can't argue with your genes.

I just wear a lot of wide leg trousers and maxi skirts!

Her arms just look scrawny to me

Halfling · 25/06/2022 07:39

My arms are like that. My legs too. I am carrying a lot of weight (visceral fat) on my tummy though. It's just how I am built. Have a tendency to pile on the pounds on my tummy, whereas my arms and legs look slim and toned. I don't exercise much other than a 45 mins walk once a day.

Really?

Dancefever · 25/06/2022 08:40

They look like normal young slim arms. I always had arms like that but now in my 50s I have definite flab underneath which wobbles when I raise my arms.

Siezethefish · 25/06/2022 08:45

Get some hand weights and look up some exercises on line. I did about 5 mins a day and after a couple of months had well toned arms. Don’t do it anymore which is a shame but for a while they looked good enough for others to comment. Mine were 1.5kg weights but that became too light so I just did more reps.

Zazdar · 25/06/2022 08:59

That is a barbell hip thrust. It’s a hamstring and glute exercise. It won’t help your arms.

gamerchick · 25/06/2022 09:07

mellatronella · 24/06/2022 18:33

tbh this (pic) would scare the shit out of me as a menstruating woman, but it's very popular it seems, so I am presuming it's safe if you know your stuff.

I will probably opt for yoga/pilates Grin

Aye if you're working on your arse.

It's properly hard to bulk when you're female. It's the second time I've seen this on here this week. Why do women think if they do weights they're going to end up with huge muscles?

milkysmum · 25/06/2022 09:33

They just look like thin arms. I'm 42 and mine look pretty much like this ( I think?). I joined the gym in January this year in a desperate bit to get fit, tone a bit and add some muscle definition. I do a combination of body pump, hiiit, Pilates etc..
