Grown up surfer style

Espritdescalier · 10/06/2022 21:35

When I was lass 25 years ago I was a bit of a surfer girl - there was a surf outlet near where I grew up by the beach and we hung around in Roxy and Billabong feeling cool. Now I'm in my 40s I can't pull off crop tops any more but I'd love to recapture that carefree beach style. I recently discovered Free People although I need to pick and choose - any other grown up surf style ideas or people to follow for inspiration?

Following..I was more of a skater style person but at 38 feel I will look like a complete idiot, but wouldn't mind capturing the essence of it somehow.

Espritdescalier · 10/06/2022 21:46

Whoop @Nutellaspoon at least we have company! I did look for 'mum surfer style' on insta but it all seemed to be models who had babies then wore bikinis to show how their tummies had snapped back. I'm a reasonably fit size 10 but I'm certainly not as smooth and fresh as I was at 17 and don't want to bare as much flesh any more. But that laid-back, slouchy vibe makes me feel happy, and I'd love to capture it again.

I’m late 40s and still wear skating gear. Granted I’ve always preferred mens clothing but I certainly don’t let she stop me wearing what I like and I don’t look ridiculous (or late 40s 😂)

Tinkletwat · 10/06/2022 21:55

Finisterre?

Beatrixpotterspencil · 10/06/2022 22:36

There's nothiong idiotic about coastal/surf style clothes. It's a specifit outdoors look that isnt quite Barbour but not Arcteryx either.
It has it's own slouchy loveliness.
I rate fatface, Passenger, Finisterre currently, and it is pretty much ageless, just the small details change as we grow older and our tastes alter.
It isn't a fashion so much as a reflection of your lifestyle, and there are no rules. Swap the crop top for a longerline vest, and chill.

I say this, but don't dress in this style myself, but I live somewhere where it occurs a lot ;)

GettingStuffed · 10/06/2022 22:42

I saw someone disappearing a cropped top over a long vest. It looked pretty good. Weird Fish also has this vibe

Espritdescalier · 10/06/2022 22:52

Thanks everyone! I do love Finisterre and the Passenger vibe too. @StinkyWizzleteets your style sounds fab! I'm too self conscious now to pull off men's clothes, I think, the days when I'd saunter around in a rash vest and board shorts knowing I was radiating youthful femininity are gone!

I'm rediscovering my style after the lost years of small kids so all suggestions and ideas really helpful thank you!

I love this look too, it was very much my thing 20 years ago. I’m now 41 and am going back to it. I actually have a Roxy dress that I bought when I was 18 which I have worn every summer I’ve had it. It cost £50 which was so expensive for me at the time- but has been worth it!

I got a nice T-shirt and hoody from Saltrock last week. The quality is Really good

Daria32 · 10/06/2022 23:43

I could have written this! I love Free People, but I agree, it can be hit and miss- and pricey. though have a few maxi dresses that I love and some yoga style pants and tops. Last summer I bought some maxi skirts from ONeill and Roxy, which I wear with vest tops, as well as Levi denim shorts with slouchy jumpers. Slouchy tracksuit bottoms and racer vests with trainers or havaiianas in the summer. Its so comfy- and At 41 I feel like I’m slowly recapturing my surfy youth! 😂

Nutellaspoon · 11/06/2022 08:43

My dc2 was up for 4 hours last night so I spent ages looking at websites for this. I like the stuff from o'neill, animal, quicksilver but what I notice is that it's the same as other shops they just do the model shots on a beach with a bucket hat.

So I wonder if it's actually all in the accessories

BusyBeaver · 11/06/2022 08:49

I love this style and agree it's sometimes tricky to work out the grown up version. I feel like I need to get highlights again and lose a stone to have the proper surfer look.

KatyS36 · 11/06/2022 09:49

I love white company for this look. More for evenings in beach bar but it's that relaxed slouchy look but very feminine.

Weepingwillows12 · 11/06/2022 09:57

I think weird fish gets close. I sometimes get things from the surf brands but I don't think I am the target anymore. Rapanui sometimes has nice casual stuff too.

Nutellaspoon · 11/06/2022 10:14

It's a careful balance between surfer chic and yacht club wino

Wow... I've never been able to describe my style, but this... this is it 🤣

Fidodidit · 11/06/2022 12:17

I also rate Finisterre. Also some Hush on the bottom half and their sweatshirts. You might find the odd thing by Celtic & Co as well.

Gottoomuchgoingon · 11/06/2022 13:46

Try the outdoorsy shops. I buy a lot of animal stuff and wear converse a lot. Still a surfer vibe and I'm 48

This is a good shout, I got some nice plain dresses from mountain warehouse

I need someone to start a clothing brand with this as their tagline!

BusyBeaver · 11/06/2022 16:54

I mean the surfer/ yacht club wino look.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 11/06/2022 16:57

I was going to say mountain warehouse have some nice bits, I also like Animal and Quicksilver, its not all crop tops.

StridTheKiller · 11/06/2022 18:04

This ex-surfer and skateboarder now lives in a Gorilla Robe or Dry Robe! Still got long sun bleached hair but more of a dog walker/hiker/paddleboarder these days!

LadyCatStark · 11/06/2022 19:32

I’ve never grown out of the surfer/ skater look 😂. This is my outfit today (please excuse the toilet selfie!). Like at PP said, I don’t think it’s the brands that matter, it’s more the style. I always wear Vans or Converse but my clothes come from anywhere. I do prefer to wear denim shorts wherever possible and for ultimate slouchy comfort, I give you the shacket! I sleep in 2 Dutch braids to give myself beachy waves too. I think the secret to wearing anything slightly ‘alternative’ is to wear it with confidence!
